How are you saying it should work? Isn’t it pretty much standard that for a crime to be prosecuted, the victim needs to report it, and cooperate with police as part of their investigation?

(Also, ‘press charges’ does not imply suing someone. Also, citizens don’t press charges; the prosecutor presses charges; the ‘Do you want to press charges?’ question you hear sometimes is really just a shorthand for ‘If we press charges, will you cooperate with our investigation and provide us with the necessary information we need to do that, or would we be wasting our time?’ It’s possible that this works differently in the UK (I’m in the US), but I don’t believe it does. If I’m wrong, I’d be happy to be corrected.)

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

You’re replying to someone asking if the victim pressed charges in the specific instance you cite. I’m replying to that. What is the disconnect here?

Yes, I understand that you want there to be certain requirements to use recorded footage. That’s not the issue at hand. You implied that an Indian immigrant shouldn’t have to report (or press charges, specifically) an incident, and implied that it should just… magically be prosecuted, I don’t know… that’s what I’m trying to figure out - how do you expect these hypothetical laws to be enforced, if not through the normal channels? Just because something is illegal doesn’t mean that anyone violating that legality is magically, immediately held to account for it. You’re objecting to the already-in-place process for making that happen, so what’s your desired solution?

Edit: To summarize the entire comment chain:

You, in OP: The law should work this way.

Reply: “In the UK, it basically already does.”

You: “Then how was this perceived violation permitted to exist?”

Reply: “Did the victim report it / press charges?”

You: “They can’t / shouldn’t have to do that for these reasons!”

Me: “So how is this law supposed to be enforced?”

You: “I already said that it should be illegal!”

That last comment, that’s the nonsequitur.

Strategically placed near every door, window, sewer pipe, and vent the DM put an Antimagic Field device.

I once played with someone who argued that Diplomacy would never be usable on any important person because, since it requires 1 minute of uninterrupted conversation to use, everyone who is important enough would have a jester or aid or someone they’d hire specifically to interrupt every conversation they were involved in every 9 rounds. Absolutely infuriating person to play with. This anecdote is completely unrelated to this post, but your suggestion just made me remember it again, and it irritated me all over again.

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

They never really went into detail, their whole argument was that if you wanted to use Diplomacy, you did so by default at a -10 penalty (for doing it ‘rushed’), or it would guaranteed fail, for the above reason. :(

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

This was pre-5e; we were playing 3.5e, where that’s actually an official thing you can do:

Changing others’ attitudes with Diplomacy generally takes at least 1 full minute (10 consecutive full-round actions). In some situations, this time requirement may greatly increase. A rushed Diplomacy check can be made as a full-round action, but you take a -10 penalty on the check.

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

Exactly that. I wish I was kidding.

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

The other problem with this, content aside, is the classification of a post as “successful” or “unsuccessful”, implying that how much interaction your post receives is a scoreboard and you should be using the platform solely with the goal of scoring higher in mind. Which is basically exactly what happens in most big Reddit subs, and is a large contributor to the platform growing increasingly shitty.

People used to post on internet forums because they were interested in the discussion, or had something novel to share, and now it’s just to make an imaginary number go up.

If I have a problem I can’t solve, and I make a post, and get 1 upvote and 1 reply that solves my problem, I’d call that post far more successful than a repost of a repost of a cat video that gets 100 replies and 10,000 upvotes.

Is it possible for us to have the benefits of voting without the nonsense that comes with it?

Isn’t that essentially what Lemmy has? You can vote on comments, you can see the score of an individual comment, but there’s no aggregate score on user profiles, so the incentive to karma farm just isn’t there. Sure, there’ll be people who just really want to get high-scoring posts, and operate with that mindset, but I think it’s far, far less than on Reddit.

KoboldCoterie,

If they’re interpretting ‘roguelite’ as single-session games with meta-progression between runs, then VS qualifies. I wouldn’t have called it a roguelite personally, but I can at least see where they got it from.

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

Noita is just fantastic. It’s mind-blowing to realize for the first time just how expansive the game is. Like, a new player can definitely “win” the game without even seeing 95% of it, or knowing it’s there. It’s not until you get curious and brave and start exploring off the “easy” path that the sheer scope of it is apparent. (This was absolutely my experience.)

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

Latest update even makes it playable fully with a controller very nicely. I’ve been enjoying it on the Steam Deck. It’s surprising how well it works, considering the complexity of the game and its controls. (It was playable with a controller before that update, but they massively re-worked the default control scheme to be much better and more efficient.)

KoboldCoterie,

It took me far too long to realize what was going on before this image was modified…

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

The real question that I rarely see answered about all of these hand-held PCs coming out is, can they cleanly suspend and resume at any point during gameplay without causing problems? That’s (IMO) the single most important feature of the Steam Deck and one I’ve never seen work as well in other hand held PCs.

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

That’s silly, friends only exist on the internet.

If you’re unhappy with the moderation on a given community, make your own competing community, with your own moderation policies. If more people feel strongly about it and agree with your views over the original, they can come to your community instead. There is no overarching ‘Lemmy’ to ban you; instances are all separate. That’s the beauty of Lemmy.

Biden can’t win here. Whatever he does, he’s going to alienate a huge voting bloc. The best option could just be for him to choose not to run.

Maybe something like “Which companies are giving us the biggest commission on referrals currently?”

KoboldCoterie,

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

God, it’s so obvious, you can do it in only two lines of code.

<span style="color:#323232;">if (number == 1 || number == 3 || number == 5 || number == 7 || number == 9...) return false;
</span><span style="color:#323232;">else return true;
</span>
KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

Looking at their code, it’s really just a bunch of checks to make sure the variable passed is actually an integer that it can work with, followed by the solution:

return (n % 2) === 1;

I can’t think of a more efficient way to get the answer. It does seem like it’d take more time to download the package than to just write the function yourself, though.

If any commercial use of AI generated art required some transfer of money from the company using it to the artists whose work was included in training the models, it’d probably be a step in the right direction.

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

Even if AI companies were to pay the artists and had billions of dollars to do it, each individual artist would receive a tiny amount, because these datasets are so large.

I don’t really think that’s a problem. If a company is generating $X.00 in revenue using AI generated work, some percentage of that revenue should probably be going to the artists whose work was used in training that model, even if it’s a fraction of a fraction of a cent per image generated.

KoboldCoterie,

Are you perhaps referring to the myth that the law requires companies to maximize shareholder profits above all else?

KoboldCoterie,

I didn’t even look at the URL, to be honest; it was the most layman-friendly and succinct article that was from the last few years that popped up in a quick search, but there’s plenty of similar articles from other sources if anyone doubts this one.

In all fairness, this sounds much more humane than what’s been happening in some other areas.

Outreach workers, police officers and city employees are working to take down the more than 75 tents, place personal items in storage and move some 90 people in the area into shelters.

They referred her to one of several nearby shelters where some 100 extra beds have been set aside for those affected by the clearing.

City workers are currently focusing on connecting people with treatment, shelter or family reunification […]

While I can’t speak to the effectiveness of this, it’s at least better than the “Throw it all in a dumpster and tell them to leave without giving it any additional thought” plan that’s been executed elsewhere.

The Democracy of the founding fathers was Greek Democracy, predicated upon a slave society, and restricted to only the elite. This is the society we live in today, even with our reforms towards direct representation. The system is inherently biased towards the election of elites and against the representation of the masses....

If the monopoly still manages to survive despite competition, then the monopoly is earned because the company is obviously still able to maintain a stranglehold on the market despite competitors popping up.

In practice, the dominant player in the industry can operate at a loss to drive the upstart competition out of business, buy their assets for pennies on the dollar, then jack their prices up again when there are no alternatives. Or, if you don’t like that one, choose any of the numerous anti-competitive strategies in use today.

If people collectively saw that behavior and said “We’re not buying from you anymore”, they could put that company out of business, but that simply isn’t realistic when dealing with such a large number of individuals. So it continues to work.

Without regulating anti-competitive behavior, monopolies are inevitable and competing without an initial bankroll capable of operating at a loss for as long or longer than the existing monopoly is impossible.

The idea is cool in theory - that anyone who doesn’t like how the current monopoly is operating can simply open their own competing business, be more consumer friendly, and steal the market share - but that’s simply not the reality we live in.

Meta Confirm Charging EU Users For Ad-Free Access to FB and Insta (alternativeto.net)

Meta has officially confirmed its decision to introduce a subscription plan for ad-free access to Instagram and Facebook for users in the European Union, EEA, and Switzerland. This move comes a few weeks after Meta first considered the idea, amidst regulatory pressure from the EU regarding the company’s ad targeting and data...

KoboldCoterie,

I’d be interested to hear how many of those strips searches of children have actually yielded anything. If that number is zero, or close to zero, then what’s the justification for it to continue?

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

Unless I misunderstand it, they’re saying 25% of all strip searches lead to convictions, but I’m curious what percentage of the strip searches conducted on children specifically do. I can’t imagine it’s 25%.

And your point is a good one - how many of those required the strip search?

I’m unclear if you’re familiar with the Marathon IP, and just discovered the new game they’re making, or if you’re just discovering Marathon as a whole, but if it’s the latter, you might be interested to find out that there were 3 games in the Marathon series already, released back in the 90s, around the same time as Doom / Doom 2, and they were incredible, as one of if not the first FPS with a heavy focus on storyline over just run and gun shooting. What’s more, you can play them for free, through this open-source engine that runs the original map files, and has been endorsed by the game’s original creators.

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

Based on what we know of the new game (which isn’t much), it appears to be a sequel of sorts that takes place well after the events of the original games, as far as storyline or theming goes, but the gameplay looks like it’ll be quite different.

KoboldCoterie,
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

Honestly I’d just love to see a modern re-imagining of the original trilogy. Same story, same basic level structure, just give us a modern 3D engine and some alterations to make the ship generally feel larger and to follow modern design philosophies.
