Klystron,

I wish gog had one too… I’ve transitioned to only buying stuff from steam if it’s not on GoG. Missing half a year of gameplay haha.

Klystron,

I watch forsen a lot on twitch, and his chat streams at a hundred messages a second so no one will ever see your individual chat. It’s awesome because it’s like a hive mind at work. Everyone is spamming one emote, and then something on stream happens and then every single chatter simultaneously starts spamming another emote in reaction to that. It’s fun.

For me smaller streams aren’t fun because everything’s (generalizing here) super moderated. No unrelated chat, nothing negative, no backseat gaming, etc. It’s basically post something positive about the streamer or the game and that’s it. Of course if you’re watching your buddy with three other guys not applicable.

Klystron,

Nah I covered that with my second paragraph… Basically anyone over 100 viewers is like that.

Klystron,

Green/blue bubbles is just a simple way to say sms sucks. Besides those stories about teens getting social pressured, all anyone cares about is basically just sending photos that don’t look like they were taken 20 years ago.

Klystron,

An argument I’ve heard against it is that it’s overly harmful against non-western religions, specifically Islam. A pretty common tenet in Islam is some kind of head covering for woman. Banning that is a pretty sweeping reform. Christianity and Catholicism don’t have anything like that, and if you really wanted to wear a cross you could just hide a necklace under your shirt. And Judaism, most non -orthodox Jews don’t wear a yamaka 24/7. So in the end (typical) white religions aren’t affected while minorities are.

Personally for me I don’t care about wearing a religious symbol as long as you’re not pushing your agenda. I don’t care if my boss has a Bible on his desk any more than if he had a copy of dragon Ball z.

Klystron,

I fucking loved this game. I “acquired” it one night just to see how it was and ended up getting completely wrapped up in it and played through to the morning. Immediately bought the whole game next day. Not sure how updates and stuff are but the core gameplay is so much fun.

Klystron,

Well to balance that out indie games are normally a lot cheaper. Underrail is only $9 off on GoG but that’s a 60% discount. It’s rare to get a kinda modern AAA game that cheap.

Klystron,

Fuck I miss that $5 hot n ready. When I was younger picking that up with some crazy bread and heading back to my dorm to watch some football was my favorite Sunday pastime 😭

Klystron,

I must once again thank guitar hero 3 for introducing me to some legendary songs

OLED Steam Deck Announced, Pre-Orders Begin 16 November @ 10 AM PST (store.steampowered.com)

64/512GB LCD models are being phased out and are permanently on discount until sold out. Seems the 256GB LCD will remain while 512GB/1TB OLED are the other new SKUs. There is also an extremely limited limited edition 1 TB OLED that has a new color way, exclusive to the US and Canada.

Klystron,

Here’s an article by The Verge for a quick run down on what’s different. Sounds like basically everything got a slight face lift, however not enough to warrant the Steam Deck 2 moniker. Better battery, slightly better chip, better cooling, Wifi 6E, and more… Sounds like a no-brainer to buy this one over last “gen.” Not quite enough for a straight up upgrade for me though.

Klystron,

Arad productions has produced fine films such as venom and the uncharted movie. Along with the spider verse movies. What a range.

Also, Sony pictures is distributing the film, funnily enough, lol.

Klystron,

The issue with the fold is that it opens into a tablet from factor that Android has notoriously been awful at supporting. Even after the release of their new tablet and now the fold their support is severely lacking. Ive owned both the pixel and Galaxy fold and experience wise the Galaxy fold is vastly superior. Just the fact that whenever you open the phone it’s defaults to a portrait mode means 99% of apps “just work” and the ones that support a tablet ui get 10x better. As cool as the passport form factor is and how bad (to some, not me) the Galaxy’s super thin design is, the pixel fold just cannot compete due to Google’s failings in gathering support for tablets. I ditched my pixel fold for my old Galaxy fold and couldn’t be happier.

I don’t think there’s not an audience however; old people who want a bigger screen, people addicted to their phone, kids for big screen gaming, all great examples of how foldables succeed. I honestly think most of the hate for them comes from the fact that they’re big and bulky, especially from a userbase like Lemmy, which from what I’ve seen are predisposed to small phones. I think if every carrier just gave out a Galaxy fold then everyone who didn’t care about a small form factor would fall in love. I sincerely believe that they are the future and am dying for apple to release one, since that’ll be the nail in the coffin for traditional slabs.

Klystron,

What if I hate pineapple on pizza?

Klystron,

There’s alternatives for all of that, why are you stuck on Google? You could create a new email on a different site or host your own and there would be no differences between it and a gmail account. For photo services you could build a nas that has auto backup and never pay a penny again to Google. I understand they are pervasive in the modern world so it’s hard to escape but there’s always options.

Klystron,

Yeah I feel you that was me for a while. Eventually I said enough was enough and every time I came across a service that was linked to my Gmail I unlinked and made a new account. It doesn’t have to be all at once, slow and steady wins the race too.

Klystron,

A solid standard issue cat. Mine says hello

Klystron,

I’ve bought Samsung for the past 5 years now and have never had an issue with bloat if you buy from Samsung. If you’re buying it from a carrier then yeah there’s probably a ton of crap preloaded. Imo Samsung just offers too much of a complete package to pass up. Pixel is good but hardware leaves some to be desired. The cute software quirks just don’t make it up for me.

Klystron,

So it’s like a remake of the first one? What’s been changed?

Klystron,

Every tech article I read nowadays I feel like has the appendix, “which is illegal in the EU.” Lol

Klystron,

Wow, based. It looks like her documentary is good too, I’ll check it out.

Klystron,

Pretty hyped, even if it’s mostly just for nostalgia. Even though most people agree it’s 5 > 4 > 3, there’s just something about 3 that strikes a chord with me. Probably because it’s edgy af and I played it when I was an edgy teen but also the music is the best in the series imo

Klystron, (edited )

It’s, “Objects in mirror MAY be closer than they appear,” dammit!

I’m not crazy, you’re crazy!

Klystron,

I’d say the 2 1/2 hour commute is pretty unheard of. I’ve never heard of it before. That sounds like hell. My boss’s is 90 mins and he’s always complaining.

Klystron,

It’s pretty clean. I moved here a few years ago and have never gotten the feeling that it’s dirty. Around the homeless camps though it can be a little rough though.

Klystron, (edited )

Yeah I’m not an av fanatic so I could really care less about the Dolby Atmos plus extreme ultra©️ speakers nor how big the screen is or if it’s on film or whatever. I saw Oppenheimer at an IMAX theater with film or whatever because I kept hearing it was the correct way to watch it or whatever and it was basically the same as every other movie I’ve seen. And for the audience I purposefully go during matinees on a weekday so I don’t have to hear other people talking, digging in their popcorn, seeing their phones go off, or laughing way too hard at something for way too long. The only reason I still go to theaters is because I like seeing things when they come out and sometimes I just want a slushee and some bunch a crunch.

Klystron,

The problem in the US is that the iPhone has a huge amount of the market and iMessage mostly does that already. For Android to counter that you have to use a 3rd party app, which further fractures an already smaller market. Or everyone could just use sms which is free with basically every plan nowadays, which gets you by.

Klystron,

Very interesting. I was in the military, which was pretty much a smorgasbord of the US and not once did I ever hear of anyone burning their time off. Every boss I worked for begged us to take all of our time off.

Klystron,

Cool to see they managed to incorporate it. I like the idea of face unlock but for me it’s not convenient enough. Hard to use like if I’m sitting at my desk and phones sitting on top, I need to hover my face over it awkwardly until it sees me, and if I’m laying in bed or on the couch, it won’t recognize me either. I’ll always be loyal to the trusty fingerprint reader.

Klystron,

I play mostly handheld emulators on mine, with some other systems sprinkled in. Handhelds have always been my favorite systems, so it’s lots of Pokemon, jrpgs on the Vita/psp, and whatever else games I missed growing up. If you want to buy one device that’ll do everything, it seems like the Odin 2 is it. It really is awesome having a dedicated device for emulation.

Klystron,

You can stream games from your PC, if that helps.

Klystron, (edited )

Nah yeah, they definitely can, I was just saying for me that’s what I like doing. The Odin 2 specifically can play up to PS2/gc upscaled to like 1080p pretty much perfectly, 3ds, Wii, and some switch as well, however the android switch emulator still isn’t fully optimized. I play smash melee or a match of Mario strikers on mine from time to time just when I have some time to kill.

Klystron, (edited )

Well, it’s marketed as an emulation machine, not a steam deck killer. In the niche it’s aiming for, it’s a pretty knock out device.

Klystron,

That’s a shitty one, haven’t heard of that. Both kb+m die? At the same time? Only for cyberpunk? How long does it last?

Klystron,

The pixel watch is pretty much the worst smart watch I’ve tried. I’ve used the apple watch s3/4/7 and the galaxy watch 4 classic and the 5 regular and the pixel watch is pretty useless in comparison to either, with the apple watch leagues above either. Basically every nicety I expect to be there isn’t. Alarms don’t sync with your phone, notifications go off on your phone then your watch as opposed to one or the other, do not disturb doesn’t sync with your phone, theater mode only affects your watch, the battery life is atrocious.

I get that it’s Google’s first go but I can’t in good conscience recommend it to someone else. Maybe with the 2 they’ve resolved these issues but what I stated to me I feel like are pretty basic features to include. Using my apple watch for the first time was great, it felt like an extension of my phone. Turning one setting on my watch affected my phone so I didn’t need to touch it. Setting alarms on my phone turned them on my watch so I didn’t need to do it again on my watch. Every time I use my pixel watch I have to remind myself to do it on my phone too so they don’t conflict. The health tracking is neat I guess but you need a subscription for Fitbit once your free one expires… pretty terrible. Look elsewhere imo.

Klystron,

Yeah, it’s pretty terrible. For me a smartwatch should be complementary to the phone, reducing the amount of times I need to pull out my phone to do things. Google seems content on making you do everything you do on your phone twice, by making you repeat steps on your watch. With the pixel watch you’ve essentially strapped a standalone smartphone to your wrist.

For you, I guess free is free but there are a lot of design decisions that make me question google. Maybe one day they can match apple in the astronomical technical know-how required for alarm sync.

Klystron,

I mean there’s a lot of substitutes right? I feel like every YouTube video I watch there is a plug for their patron, kofi, buy me a coffee, podia. Hopefully they can compete to be not awful in the long run.

Klystron,

This is one of those, “if you have to ask” scenarios. If the little voice in your head is saying maybe this isn’t such a good idea, maybe it’s not such a good idea.

Klystron,

I’m big into the SBC gaming world, where increasingly more and more devices are launched with Android as opposed to Linux. My current device is the retroid pocket 3+ which runs android 11 and retails for 150ish. I’ve been using emulators for the past 15 years so I have a hearty collection of roms and along with the fact you can play play store games and stream with it, it’s pretty much the perfect device for me. Retroarch handles everything up until GameCube/PS2 era, then standalone emulators for the rest. 3ds is playable with vulkan and GameCube is too if you downscale. I literally can’t tell the difference between any resolution so it’s perfectly playable for me.

If you’re looking to get into either a dedicated handheld console for emulation or just connecting an Xbox controller to your phone, check out retro game corps on YouTube. He has detailed guides on how to set up every emulator, every handheld, everything you can think in relation to this. If you at all have nostalgia for this kind of stuff, I’d say invest like $100-$200 into one and just go crazy. They’re all seriously great little devices and being able to play all the games you did when you were a kid or just missed out on is awesome.

It’d be pretty sick if after seeing the massive success bg3 was and how they were wildly off with their prediction, Microsoft pushes an order for pillars of eternity 3.

While I’m in this bizzaro world where Microsoft makes good decisions, I’d also like a Ferrari.

Klystron,

Lol. Basically the entire air force hasn’t offered an enlistment bonus for the past 15 years because they’re so overmanned. The army just stopped offering reenlistment bonuses for the first time in god knows how long because even they’re so overmanned.

Klystron,

Retainment has never been the issue. 90% of jobs in the military are basically office jobs to support the 10% who would actually see combat. And if you are part of that 90% you have a pretty cush life. Monthly tax free pay for food and housing, free health and dental, potential to live in Japan, England, Spain, Germany, Belgium, or pretty much anywhere else, 30 days of paid time off a year, gi bill for free college, the thousands of benefits vets get after they separate, a pension for life after 20 years for those who stay in, it’s not hard to see why people stay once they’re in. Where they are having a problem is that initial hurdle, getting people actually in the door. Which makes sense, a lot of young people, especially nowadays, are pretty anti establishment; there’s also an obesity, drug, and mental health epidemic that disqualifies people from service, and there is always that looming threat that you could be sent out to die.

To answer your question, no, no meaningful standards have changed to allow more people in, besides allowing marijuana usage. Which was basically already allowed; you just needed to pinky swear to your recruiter you had never done it. If anything it’s been made more difficult with new requirements for previous medical history.

Ultimately I’m glad I joined, the benefits far outweighed the negatives. It lifted me out of poverty to a job where I’m making 6 figures and got to see the world. Only you yourself can decide if joining is worth it.

Klystron, (edited )

By far my favorite part of being in the air force was all the patches, and especially so if you’re attached to a pilot squadron since they’re the only ones authorized to have any fun. Here’s one I was given, along with it being my favorite.

Klystron,

I was actually pretty impressed with the loading, especially after coming from bg3. It was pretty much instant for me.

Klystron,

I save scum like a mother so bg3 was pretty painful to get through. Starfield was a breath of fresh air.

Klystron,

I do it with everything. The only people who have my real email address are my family. Everything else is a masked email. It’s especially nice because if I start getting spam on one email I can immediately tell which site sold my info and I never use that site again.

Klystron,

Verbatim my opinion. There’s nothing enjoyable here folks unless you like turning off your brain, fast travelling to planets and 100% search missions.
