JimmyDean,

Highschool money making hack: Take note of the vending machines and what they sell. Figure out what they don’t have that people want, then buy it in bulk at the store to sell at school for profit.

At my school they didn’t allow soda in the vending machines, so I made bank selling cans of Coca-Cola and Mountain Dew out of my locker for $1-2 each. I remember earning enough to buy an iPod and that was pretty much all I was doing it for.

JimmyDean,

Wait you built it? With like a kit or from scratch?

JimmyDean,

I’d recommend the movie Akira (1988). It’s pretty much a classic from the era of early anime, extremely detailed animation and official English dub.

JimmyDean,

Hot Rod, Step Brothers, and Tropic Thunder are a few. I love Tucker & Dale vs Evil too

JimmyDean,

I like to use the Imgur app for browsing content now that I’ve stopped using reddit. The navigation is different, but it’s usually a lot more positive of an experience.

JimmyDean,

Memes, photography, art, typical blog stuff, and major news makes it to the front page too.

What does everyone do with their old electronics?

I’ve been accumulating old electronics for about a decade now and I really need to safely dispose of them at this point. I know some cities have drop off spots for recycling, but the one near me charges a fee and appears to cater to business clients. Obviously I’m against tossing them in the bin. It’s small things, like an...

JimmyDean,

Look at modern-day MacGyver over here, actually finding a use for old gen electronics.

jk that’s really cool tbh, especially utilizing the cameras from old phones.

JimmyDean,

Hot is the best way to see new, good content consistently. Sorting by top or active will show about the same posts, in my experience.

I typically sort by top + all, then top + subscribed to see the most-engaged posts of the day first; afterwards if I still want to browse I sort by hot + subscribed or new + all.

JimmyDean,

It varies by instance. Lemmy.ee has a low cap on image upload size because it’s a small instance, but I think lemmy.world allows uploads of a larger size.

You can also use another image hosting site like imgur or pixelfed and link from those in the URL section of your post.

JimmyDean,

I prefer to call it Friday’s Eve

Did anyone have any positive results with CBD products?

Not too long ago, regulations on CBD changed in Germany leading to a plethora of products containing it. As someone who occasionally needs pain medication, I tried some of the products to avoid regular pain killers (ibu). Especially on days with lighter pain, I wished for an alternative to the sledgehammer meds. But I was left...

JimmyDean,

This is a tricky question. I’m inclined to have a positive opinion about CBD, but if I’m completely honest I don’t feel much of anything from it solo. I’ve taken CBD by itself multiple times and it always just seemed like a placebo. I think CBD and THC together have a great synergy, but it really misses the mark when I only have the one without psychoactive effects.

On the other hand, I’ve had friends swear by CBD tinctures. They were doing large doses (like 50mg+) daily and claimed it had all sorts of benefits for their chronic pain or upset stomach. I never tried doing doses that big regularly just because of the cost and my previous experiences leaving me dissatisfied.

For what it’s worth, Extract Labs is one of the sources I’ve had recommended to me by a trusted friend.

What would you do with 100 billion dollars to have the most positive impact on the largest number of people?

My partner and I were discussing this over dinner, our ideas went from buying up land to finance organic farming and distributing it at the lowest price to crashing the financial system to “reset” everybody’s bank account with no possible recovery. Any other ideas?

JimmyDean,

I feel like this is the only answer that would make a difference long-term.

The other suggestions like giving people food and housing would only be putting a bandaid on a broken system; it needs to actually change to prevent the same situations from reoccurring.

JimmyDean,

I like the kind with 90’s style fonts in bright colors like they were made with Paint. The more nostalgic, the better.

JimmyDean,

But that’s just as easily avoided too. I only know what you’re talking about because I saw like 4 cringe atheist memes while broswing All once. I don’t subscribe to any of those pages and so I rarely see it, just like how one could easily avoid political discussion.

JimmyDean,

-Meme Guy: It’s time.

-Team Rocket: We’re leaving too.

Looking for suggestions for a place to move in the US as a remote employee

So the work I do is 100% remote now. I moved to Southern California because of an industry that has in part moved to remote work. My only requirements are a temperate climate, nature access and hopefully a blue-ish state. Is there a place out there that makes sense financially? I’m hoping to buy a house less then 500k. I...

JimmyDean,

I might be a bit biased for my own state, but Oregon sounds like it could be right up your alley. Real estate prices have kinda settled down recently after the inflation we had the past few years, so you can find nice houses for 350-500k in the slightly-rural areas surrounding Portland like Gresham, Oregon City, Estacada or Sandy.

Nature access is excellent, especially if you were to live around the Columbia River Gorge like in Corbett. A drive to the coast is under 2 hours from there also.

JimmyDean,

The biggest downside of late in my opinion has been the homelessness and mentally unwell / drug abuse issues. Measure 110’s decriminalization of hard drugs without actually having sufficient treatment options available just exacerbated existing problems. Rural areas have a lot less of this but you’re almost guaranteed to see some nasty stuff if you’re in the bigger cities.

A lot of people do take advantage of taxes around here. There’s no sales tax in Oregon so people from Vancouver just drive over one of the bridges to do their shopping.

JimmyDean,

I’d say so. It’s the kind of town with one main road that runs through the center. I had a family friend who lived there and when I visited the houses were all surrounded by acres of fields, plenty of room for horses and such.

JimmyDean,

Early pirating was like playing the lottery.

Will I get the good version of a song or a weird remix?

Will the media play or be some unrecognized format?

What’s making my pc run so slow?

Is eating a lot of canned food bad?

I recently gave up eating takeout every night, but I’m too lazy to cook, which led to me replacing it with basically nothing but canned food. Like I’ll mix a can of beans and a can of mixed vegetables together, put half in a bowl and put the other half in a container for tomorrow, put salad dressing on it, and then that’s...

JimmyDean,

We’ve come a long way regarding canning and food safety, I don’t think you’ll have any issues like the crews of the HMS Terror and HMS Erebus had.

tldr; a short summary about the demise of John Franklin’s 1845 Arctic expedition. Many of the tinned rations were poorly sealed and contaminated with lead, leading to sickness, starvation and general tragedy for all involved. (If you think that sounds interesting there’s a 10-episode AMC dramatization called The Terror, which is how I learned about it)

JimmyDean,

Dammit. The instance my account is on doesn’t support uploads over a certain size so I had to post somewhere else and link it

JimmyDean,

You be Corn, and I’ll be Uni. Together we can join forces to become… Corn-Uni

Anyone else gradually stopped drinking alcohol?

I stopped drinking alcohol some years ago. Before that I hardly consumed any alcohol at all for many years, but in my college years and maybe some years after that, I drank socially like “everybody else”. But I gradually kind of got tired of dealing with the bad feelings (physical and emotional), so I drank less and less....

JimmyDean,

I had way more fun drinking when I was a minor than as an adult. It’s not even about it being “taboo” but just not being as enjoyable to me anymore; now that weed is legal in my state I’ll smoke weekly but only drink maybe 5-10 times a year. I had a couple drinks (for the first time in ~3 months) at a BBQ this past weekend and it didn’t have any positive impact on my evening.

I rarely go to bars anymore but when I do I’ll have 1-2 beers and buy a food item to go with each one. It’s wild to remember I used to have like 6-10 drinks during a night out and eat nothing until I got back home and made a sloppy quesadilla or something.

JimmyDean,

Busuu is neat. It has a feature to submit answers to the community so native speakers can correct speaking/writing and give tips.

How do you lead/manage people who are much older than you?

So I’m getting a promotion soon (yay!), moving up from just a line cook to sous-chef and I’ve only been with this company for a few months. Thing is that I’m still quite young (mid twenties) and will be the direct supervisor of some people a fair bit older than I am. Think 10-20 years older. It might just still be a bit of...

JimmyDean,

The only job I’ve had where I might have been “managing” employees older than myself we never had any issues because of an age gap. In fact, I even trained a guy to operate the same machine I ran who was like 30 years older and we got along great.

The best advice I can give is simply: don’t make it a big deal and they probably won’t either. I showed them the same amount of respect I would to someone my own age and didn’t treat them like they should be “higher up” in the field because of their seniority.

In my situation the older guy I trained was a railroad worker for like 20 years before switching to the machining job; we both understood that I had a couple years ahead of him at this particular facility and he took the opportunity to ask questions learn a lot while we worked together.

JimmyDean,

I’m in a legal state too and the prices vary drastically based on how strong or fresh the flower is. I can get an ounce of older flower for like $40-50 or 3.5 grams of top-shelf for about the same price. I usually stick to the cheaper stuff but occasionally will splurge on the really good stuff.

All this to say: if you like the bud and it gets you stoned in only a couple hits, then it’s worth $60 for ¼.

JimmyDean,

I lost track of how many times I tried to block advertising accounts on there, but eventually gave up because blocking them just doesn’t fucking work. So glad to be done with that rotten platform now

JimmyDean,

Coincidentally, I know someone who recently applied for a regular teacher’s assistant role and when they got to the interview the hiring director didn’t even ask questions about that position; instead they interviewed for a special ed job and then only offered that. It was a total bait & switch to try and fill a role nobody was applying for.

What is the best way to host/upload gifs/mp4s/videos for Lemmy posts?

My major struggle with Lemmy right now is that it is near impossible to post a video/gif/mp4 without having another account on a hosting provider. Reddit handled this very well, and I am concerned that if there isn’t an easy solution on Lemmy, it won’t work for many people as an alternative to Reddit....

JimmyDean,

“Somewhat lacking” is putting it nicely. I mainly browse lemmy on Jerboa and it doesn’t even have a function to search community posts, let alone one that is lacking.

JimmyDean,

Woah, I’ve actually been to a Chon show. Totally didn’t expect to see that band pop up in this thread

JimmyDean,

Legitimately almost every genre, as long as I’m the mood. Lately tho I’ve mostly been listening to The Fall of Troy, Blink-182, Dance Gavin Dance, This Town Needs Guns, and good ole Pro Era artists like Capital Steez and Joey Bada$$.

JimmyDean,

They were great. I think it was around 2015-2016, and I still have a Chon pin from the show too!

JimmyDean,

Simply put: it stinks, like bad. The room is hidden under the largest city in the land, only accessible by spelunking through vast distances of underground sewers that smell like decomposing waste. This smell-field ensures only the bravest and most dedicated adventurers ever travel to the room, and none who attempt it enjoy talking about it.

JimmyDean,

Damn, that's a nice first comment
