I checked Reddit today. Of course from old reddit. It's literally crap. Not cause I hate reddit now but the first 50 some frontpage subs just sucked. I'm glad I deleted my account
took a deep dive into how CEO Steve Huffman went from being Reddit's co-founder to its much-needed savior at a difficult moment—and how he then became the villain at the center of Reddit's still-raging protests: https://slate.com/technology/2023/06/reddit-protests-steve-huffman-api-chaos.html
Reddit is gonna burn and we all will witness it. A. Reddit Hangs up its boots and goes Dark. B. u/spez resigns and all third party apps come back. It's already to late. Long live the #fediverse , Kbin, Lemmy, Mastodon
@mastodonmigration Kbin has the best of both worlds Threads-Post like Reddit, Microblogging-Tweets like Twitter, Magazines-Subs like Reddit. I signed up for kbin and haven't looked back. i just mastodon once in a while and lemmy but that's about it
We appreciate Ernest and all he is doing for kbin and making this the best instance ever. I'm on mastodon and lemmy but I don't think i have used them in a while. Thank you, Ernest, for what you are doing for all of us and the #fediverse...
So, if I'm following correctly, Lemmy currently is experiencing a massive wave of bot registrations, and now about 800 thousand new registered accounts across several different instances are bots. What is kbin doing to prevent that, other than just being somewhat smaller and not picking up as much attention?
@Varyag Kbin and lemmy got to start somewhere, right? they have tools to combat the bots but the bots and the people making them are smart also. it's an ongoing cat and mouse game. Twitter been around for a decade and had a huge bot problem that never went away. Reddit same thing. Lemmy and kbin are no different. once something is popular the bots will come. We just gotta make sure we do our part and report them!

So yeah. The gist of it is that even though the AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux folks are trying, the simple truth is that IBM/RedHat doesn't seem to want these distros to exist.
Given IBM/RedHat package and distribute RHEL, the fact that they don't want these distros to exist means that no matter what Alma or Rocky do, there will always be the risk of future disruptions to the availability of the distro and/or updates.
You can no longer rely on them.
Time to stop using RHEL-derived Linux. Personally I'm going to look into migrating my own systems to Ubuntu or Debian in the next couple years.
IBM, you suck. You are basically wiping your butt with the GPL and the concept of open source software.
Hi lemmings, I switched over from Reddit 10 days ago now but I couldn't find a mobile client that I was happy with with an experience similar to the Reddit experience I was used to. So I decided to build my own and I hope you will like it as well!...
This morning when I opened Infinity to check Reddit, I saw the announcement above: they're going subscription-only. Ironically enough, I couldn't scroll down to see the rest of the message including prices, if there were any. I also couldn't see if there was a button to close the message or start a paid subscription. I couldn't proceed to Reddit at all. My only option was to close the app completely. So I uninstalled it.
That's it for me using Reddit on mobile! Can't say I'll miss it much. But I added a LOT of content to Reddit that way, so it's their loss. Fuck you, spez!
@pixelpop3 I went to redreader also at first because they where giving a pass from the third party api mess. only thing i didn't like about redreader is that the notifications takes 30 mins cause they don't want to go against the api limit/refresh rate. I already deleted my reddit account on the 13th so there is no point anymore!
@MxM111Its wierd mastodn and kbin and lemmy are part of the fediverse but each has a different look feel and software on each instance. Mastodon is microblogging like Twitter. Kbin is microblogging threads (like reddit) and subs ,(magazine's) like reddit. Like I was saying mastodon can see kbin and Lemmy's toots and reply etc. This where it gets weird. On the fediverse you can follow other people and you will see there toots but that's it you can't see th front page like you do in kbin just the toots from people. On kbin and lemmy they have an actual interface that it looks like you are interacting in real time to the other instance but you aren't really. It's confusing but you will get it. Give it a couple of days. If you want a more reddit like feel use lemmy and kbin if you want a more Twitter like experience use Mastodon
I've been a long time Redditor and an Apollo user for about a year. I even paid for it. The main draw for me was the lack of advertising. In the back of my head I kept thinking that it couldn't last. Reddit is losing revenue from the lack of advertising views. It didn't...
I was the founder of a 73k sub API the API rules changed I used Apollo and rif the AMA came decided to protest from the 12th to the 14th came back after the day of the 14th my subscribers said shut it down. I shut it down then u/spez did that leaked memo then I decided to delete my 350k 6 years front page 5x account. It was tuff but I got kbin, Lemmy and Mastodon to help me fill the void. Yes I know I only need one account but it's a personal preference l!
Well I finally deleted my reddit account, and all of my subreddits, so I guess an introduction is in order!
Hi everybody! I'm an artist, and occasionally a writer. I wrote for a progressive publication for about 6 years, and learned a lot in the process, but haven't written much since. Here's an article I wrote in 2017 about decentralized social media. Please be kind, I had only been writing for a little over a year at that point! But let's focus on THIS point in time right now, the one where we are actually seeing what I wrote about come to pass. It is wonderful to see!
Here is an example of one of my paintings, it's called "The Lovers". I am loving being here!
[EDIT] Kbin is not letting me link an image, but the one I was going to link is the stickied post on my mastodon profile.
So the real question is why are you still on Reddit? u/spez is power hungry and will stop at nothing to keep power. We've moved onto the Fediverse some of us only see reddit through screenshots. even if spez let third party apps back on he would just look good for the investors. he will ban them at will when he has used you. Do us a favor and get off while you can.
I'm on my laptop (Connected to a 27' Monitor) and on the sidebar of kbin there was a straight up porn with the full thing showing!. I had to go to magazines and just block everything that started with that name. i don't see it anymore but how does this stuff come through the filters or what not?

We are going 9 days strong on the #redditblackout glad there are people still doing this. IT should send a message to the world that the little people have a voice. of course u/spez isn't listening thats why people are dumping reddit in droves! Reddit will die in a fire and i'm here for it! delted my 6 year old account on the 13th and i'm not going back. Period!
@victor They will never come, They won't see a nickel or a dime again! But it could happen. they could always make an app for the fediverse and charge like $5 it would probably be better then everyones cause of the billions that will go into it. but you never know!
Reddit seems like a second rate site now. Lol sad but true. i opened it the other day and was like dam this stuff is stupid now! of course i was in old reddit :P
So I left Twitter for Mastodon, and I’m happy with the switch.
Selecting a Mastodon instance seems to only make a small difference in the experience, unless you spend a lot of time on the “Local” timeline, which I typically don’t. Reliability and moderation rules seems to be the main deciding factors.
So, enter the #RedditMigration… lemmy vs. kbin seems to be which software you like better (I have not been able to tell much of a difference). But choosing an instance? Does it make ANY difference besides reliability? Can someone explain it like I’m five? Is moderation done at the magazine (or community) level, rather than the instance level, like Mastodon? kbin seems bigger at this point, but Lemmy seems a more blatant copy of Reddit (which I don’t mind). Can they see each other’s content? There has to be a web page explaining this, right?
@ender3 I have a lemmy account and kbin. When the #blackout happend i made lemmy account and made 2 subs that i had on reddit. i kept hearing kbin. so i tried it and loved it. it has Magazines (subs) Threads (post like reddit) Microbloggin (Little blogs everyone can see) IT's so sweet. I haven't logged into lemmy in like a day. i know i don't need both accounts but i like the microblogging function that kbin has. It's all the #fediverse if you think about it and i only need 1 account but i really like kbin a lot!
I’ve been trying to use #lemmy for the past week, and I’m starting to get the hang of it. But I do miss the features of a 3rd party app that can help with putting things in some order, and allow me to pick up where I left off. I’m an #apollo user for Reddit. I’m hopeful that new tools will come soon. And I’m looking forward to being an active participant in the #fediverse
Most people aren't even thinking of moving to reddit alternatives. Users have a lot of power in this situation. Just move your community to Lemmy or Kbin. It's not that hard.
I admit. On the 12th as a mod I was just gonna go till the 14th u/spez after that the leaks started coming out and realized the CEO of reddit doesn't care about us period. I created a lemmy account cause I didn't know what the fediveese was and a mastodon account and was basically trying to get away from reddit but I admit I do miss reddit.
In comes kbin I've been on for a good day on the web app cause I use my phone 99% of the time and realized after trial and error and reading what a microblog and what a thread is and how to navigate this website. I have 2 subs on lemmy that I will keep for now but I think kbin is where it's at. This is truly a reddit replacement!
