Ilikecheese,

DNS blocking doesn’t stop YouTube ads, for example.

Huh? I was able to block all ads on YouTube on my iPad just by installing a AhaDNS profile.

I’m not saying this doesn’t suck, but I really have faith in people’s desire to get around shit to not be too worried about this. I figure there will always be a way to get around anything Google throws at you, even if it ends up being something as complex as running your own proxy server that ends up receiving the full webpage google wants you to see, stripping out everything you don’t want to see, and just forwarding that to whatever browser you choose. Sure, that’s a little more work than I’d like to put in, but if that’s what it ends up taking, it’s not that much effort.

Ilikecheese,

So you passed math but failed reading, eh?

Ilikecheese,

And then if you keep reading you’ll see where they gave instructions on how to avoid having to do that.

Why are you going to lecture someone about only reading part of something and then do the exact same thing yourself?

Ilikecheese,

I’ve always thought it was better to browse all and filter out things that don’t interest me rather than try and only subscribe to things that I already know I like. I end up finding communities and discussion that I never would have found otherwise, and honestly, I can’t fathom why that isn’t the default/most popular way of using aggregated sites like this.

It’s kinda like listening to the same 3 albums over and over again just because you already know you like that music vs just letting a station play and skipping the songs that aren’t working out for you.

Ilikecheese,

Just so we’re clear here, is this the official stance? You have no plans to resolve this and we’re just supposed to put up with it?

Ilikecheese,

Alright, thanks for all your hard work. I’ll be switching to something else that doesn’t rely on broken tools then until Apple resolves it, I suppose.

I know I’m being downvoted for seeming entitled or whatever, but as an end user, broken is broken. I get that it’s not your fault and I’ve never once complained that it was but why would you move forward with this project if such a massive problem affects such a large portion of your potential users? Clearly it’s your right to do so, but as someone who actively wants to keep using Voyager and just can’t justify it, I really don’t get it.

Good luck with your project. Sincerely.

Ilikecheese,

I have an iPhone, and I don’t think I’m better than anyone else.

Well, except for people who judge other people based on what type of phone they carry. Those people are douchebags.

[Meta] Can we please chill with the "This is an old post from some other site" titles and actually use something descriptive about the meme itself?

Really getting tired of seeing references to everything here being a repost from Reddit. We get it, this place needs content and posting old stuff is a quick and easy way to do that. Maybe you don’t need to point that out in the title of every single post you make?

Ilikecheese,

To clarify, the reposting doesn’t bother me at all. I have the memory of a goldfish when it comes to things like this and even when It’s something I know I’ve seen before, I still don’t mind unless it’s literally something I’ve seen dozens of times before and it’s been reposted within the last day or so. Reposting isn’t the problem here, and I disagree with your assessment that most communities frown upon them. Sure, you usually get 1-2 people whining about how they’ve seen this content before, but I have to think those people are in the slim minority. If this was a place for all new, never before seen, original content, that would be in the rules. It isn’t.

I also disagree when you say reposts aren’t creative, or I guess I disagree that all content posted here needs to be super creative. This site and Reddit are aggregators and exist solely for people to post things they found amusing or funny. There’s no reason to slam someone’s creativity just because they saw something they were amused by and wanted to share it with people who would likely be amused by it too. It doesn’t have to be any more complicated than that.

I just wanted some descriptive thread titles so I have an idea what I’ll be seeing when I click on something. I wasn’t trying to insult anyone’s effort by making that request and I apologize to any posters who thought that’s what I was doing.

Ilikecheese,

updoot

Can that “word” please die with Reddit?

Ilikecheese,

Tap dancing Christ, I hope you’re not this dreadful in real life and just being an overly pedantic bore is something you reserve for the internet.

my second objection is that that copying bash entries is meaningless activity - everyone can just go to where they already are to see them.

Yeah, and I could browse every other website on my own to look for content I found relevant but the entire purpose of an aggregation site like Reddit or Lemmy is to…aggregate things.

and last - that post was not funny when it was new and time did not help it 🤷‍♂️

I found it amusing enough to toss it an upvote. Which is more than I could say for your needless dull reply.

Ilikecheese,

I’ve always hated the phrase “you must be fun at parties”, but I’ll be dammed if I can’t come up with a more apt reply to you than that in this moment.

As I said before, for your sake, I sincerely hope this is just some act you’re putting on for the sake of…boredom? E-clout? I dunno. I can’t rationalize why anyone would act how you are right now. We get it, you didn’t find this funny. But 250+ other people did. I’m gonna toss out another quote that I dislike but it really fits here too. If you don’t like it, just downvote and move on. There’s no reason for you to be a dick like this, but here we are.

Ilikecheese,

You’re right. One of the annoying habits I used to have on Reddit was trying to put assholes in their place. But as you’ve reminded me, the world will never run out of assholes. I need to take my own advice, downvote you and move on (and of course block your dumb ass so I never have to see your pointless negativity ever again). Good luck on getting that stick removed from your ass one of these days.

Ilikecheese,

To what end? It’s a silly little 5 second joke we’re meant to read and move on. If this had originally been a tweet would you have expected the OP here to have given you a dissertation about the history of twitter and why Elon Musk sucks so much for turning it into a nazi-haven? How would that have been relevant?

Jesus Christ, you people suck the fun out of things like it’s your damn job.

Ilikecheese,

This website is exactly what you make of it. I don’t care for shitposts, low effort memes, or just absurdist humor in general, so I make very liberal use of the block community button so I don’t have to see things that other people seem to enjoy, but I don’t.

You know what I try really hard not to do though?

Go around and bitch about things that other people do like when it’s really fuckin’ easy to just press one button and never see similar content ever again. Maybe you should try it if you find this type of humor isn’t up to your high standards.

Ilikecheese,

If you’re going to make crappy arguments, could you at least make different ones than the same ones I’ve already addressed from other people? There are people here who aren’t even 20 years old themselves. It’s absolutely absurd that you would suggest that someone can’t repost something just because it’s from another site. That’s literally where 99% of all of the content from sites like Lemmy and Reddit come from. You’re just bitching for the sake of having something to bitch about.

I think it’s time for me to take my own advice and use that block button to make things I don’t like go bye-bye.

Bye-bye!

Ilikecheese,

It should be ridiculed and mocked, not celebrated.

Nah, we save that sort of thing for killjoys like you.

Ilikecheese,

I almost met Michelle Pfeiffer on a beach as well, but it was on the other coast. When I was a kid there was a rumor that she was visiting the beach we were vacationing at because her husband (boyfriend?) was shooting a movie nearby. My cousin and I snuck over to the house they were supposedly staying at which was just across the street from us and 2 houses down and saw a car with the movie title (Super Mario Bros.) parking pass on the windshield. We went up to the house and knocked and asked if Michelle Pfeiffer was there and the guy who answered the door said we had the wrong house. We did see a blonde lady come out on the porch a couple of times that week, and even saw her walking to the beach one time but by the time we got our shoes on and told an adult we were going, we lost sight of her. It’s entirely possible it was never her to begin with, but at the time we just knew it was her and we were gonna meet her.

Also, that same week we ended up walking up on them filming an episode of Matlock, so I guess my answer for the thread is probably Andy Griffith.

I wish people would write some descriptions for their communities

I often browse /all, come across a post that looks interesting but I have no clue what’s it about, so I check the sidebar - and all I find is “An unofficial Lemmy community for X”, " A place to discuss everything about X", or the best kind, “A continuation of r/X from Reddit”....

Ilikecheese,

This was a problem on reddit too, and it looks like it’s carried over here. People make new communities and just assume that everyone in the future who finds it will just automatically know the purpose.

Ilikecheese,

Exactly, clearly that’s a subreddit designed for cavemen to discuss their disdain for temporarily halting their music and videos. Me No Pause!

Ilikecheese,

My annoyance at seeing all these reposts: 1/10

My annoyance at seeing these reposts with titles telling me that I shouldn’t be annoyed: 7/10

Ilikecheese,

That’s a good question. I think, kinda like politics in real life, the people that would make the best moderators are the ones that have very little desire to do it while often times the ones that do want it are the worst suited.

Someone once made me a moderator of a ~30,000 subscriber subreddit without me asking and I hated every second of it. All I ever tried to do make the place as good as possible and enforce the rules in place. I got praised for being a good mod, but just as often I got called a power tripping asshole by people who didn’t want to follow the rules. You really can’t win, and honestly I wouldn’t want to even try to moderate again. It takes up too much of your time, you get almost nothing from it and even when all you are doing is trying to do your best, you still end up being hated by some people. It’s just not worth the hassle.

Ilikecheese,

But aren’t jokes supposed to be like, funny or something?

YSK: If you find an interesting topic/rabbit hole, you can get some real engagement here if you share it. It doesn't get drowned out like elsewhere. (lemmy.world)

I know a lot of lurkers like me out there are browsing, but there’s quite a bit of engagement capitol on the federated instances. If you find an interesting topic and the right community, you get a lot of feedback. There’s not much hate being thrown out there either.

Ilikecheese,

OP, you should know that a lot is two words.

What do you think is the best solution to having the same named communities on different instances? (kbin.social)

We should implement this as whenever I wish to browse (for example) [email protected] I have to go to there, and whenever I wish to browse [email protected] I have to go there. Would it be possible to implement it in kbin/lemmy's code to make it easier to browse all?

Ilikecheese,

Another kink to think about is what if you have different communities with the same name on different servers with completely different content. Like what if the trees subreddit came to a server and created a marijuana themed community called trees, but then another server wanted to discuss actual trees so they called theirs trees too. Wouldn’t want those two being grouped together automatically.
