Also, you know what else goes comically over budget and over time? Car infrastructure projects! But when talking about highways it’s “an investment for the country’s mobility and ultimately its economy” yet with trains it’s “a pointless money sink that will never succeed due to this one very commonly experienced setback.”

(Full disclosure I’m not in the UK, I’m annoyed at him for the people there too, especially since their politicians’ attitudes toward high speed rail seem pretty similar to attitudes in Canada where I am.)

I’ve legit heard people say things along the lines of “The largest SUV or trucks are safer for Americans because it can hold up better in a collision with deer which we have a lot of.” (Because apparently large wildlife aren’t common anywhere at all in the rest of the world.)

They have a point though, and they’ll hold up especially well against a specific, extremely common subspecies of deer called “humans.”

    The first verifiable use of singular they for when the gender is unknown was in a novel some 100 years ago. The concept of ‘they’ as a personal pronoun was only developed in the latter half of the last century in the UK and has only been formally taught there for about three decades.

    Shakespeare used the singular they in his works. itre.cis.upenn.edu/~myl/…/002748.html

    I think I would prefer two new sets of pronouns: one for when the gender is unknown, and another as personal pronouns other than he/she.

    One could also think of they as that new pronoun. A lot of languages reuse sounds (including English) even in fairly common grammar components so one could think of this as a new word with a familiar sound assigned to it.

    “But it’s not proper English grammar!”

    It’s not? Shakespeare used it and last I heard that dude had a pretty good command of the English language.

    “But it’s not how it was used traditionally!”

    So what? What is a human language if not fluid and constantly evolving? Language should reflect culture and social ideals, and our culture is rapidly shifting toward things like gender inclusively and social justice. When was the last time you used Æ or Þ?

    @HiddenLayer5@lemmy.ml avatar

    I don’t know if French still does it that way, but in high school French class we were taught to use il (he) for gender neutral. Basically everyone (English native class) thought it was super sexist. The teacher basically explained it as “languages are all really old so they retain a lot of obsolete ideals.” IMO that’s not really an excuse for keeping those obsolete parts.

    It also destroys the very infrastructure that it’s trying to clear snow from. We eventually need to recognize that rubber wheels on asphalt simply isn’t a very efficient or durable method of moving large amounts of stuff long distances. Steel on steel is superior in both efficiency and longevity.

    Road-rail vehicles are totally a thing! Mostly for doing inspection and maintenance on rail corridors.

    Except EVs still have a significant carbon footprint from their manufacture. So do train cars and buses, but to transport everyone in cars instead of public transportation would require orders of magnitude more materials, and therefore a much higher carbon footprint. Not to mention the poor land use that car dependency causes, which both leads to deforestation and impedes reforestation, which is a further climate change contributor.

    HiddenLayer5,
    @HiddenLayer5@lemmy.ml avatar

    So can transit vehicles, in fact they last even longer so I don’t see this as an advantage for EVs. In Vancouver, Canada for example, there are fully self-driving electric trains from the 80s that are still running perfectly fine today, and the only reason they’re getting scrapped soon is because they’re loud and uncomfortable compared to newer trains, which even then I personally don’t like the transit agency’s decision to scrap them because that’s super wasteful, they could probably run another 40 years with good maintenance.

    HiddenLayer5,
    @HiddenLayer5@lemmy.ml avatar

    Which is why the real solution is PUBLIC transit, not private motor vehicle ownership of any kind beyond small electric personal mobility like an e-bike or scooter.

    Fun fact: The tables can get turned on us too. Moose and elephants have both been documented stalking humans who angered them for days trying to ambush and kill them for example.

    In fact, the saying goes that you only need to make a stalking carnivore think you’re too much trouble for the amount of nutrients you have to get away since they’re just hungry, but if you’re being stalked by a herbivore, that means they’re genuinely trying to kill you simply because they hate you.

    The job in that case is property management, not being a landlord in and of itself. If you do upkeep yourself as in renting out a basement or a second property, you’re technically both a landlord and a property manager. Homeowners can have property managers as well, such as in a condo, in that case the property manager is hired by the owners council and paid for with condo fees.

    The “professional” landlords, the type that are hated by far the most, hire dedicated property managers who do basically everything (up to and including approving new renters and evicting people in some cases) and basically the only thing the actual landlords personally do is hold the deed, which is why those businesses are called holding companies.

    Also, a surprising number of people don’t know that precentages are more often than not represented as decimals between 0 and 1 as opposed to actually a number out of 100 when used in calculations (because the concept of a percent doesn’t really exist in math, it’s just a context specific way of formatting a decimal). A lot of people just enter 69 when calculating a formula that operates on a precentage instead of 0.69 which obviously makes the formula useless, or if a formula is supposed to output a precentage, they assume that it output 0.69 percent instead of 69 percent.

    Exactly, but not in Canada because we don’t want to for whatever reason. Ironic thing is that public transport takes up a lot less physical space for infrastructure than freeway of similar capacity with interchanges, so public transportation actually protects farmers from having their livelihood encroached on by highway development. Two tracks and a station not much larger than the average barn leaves way more arable land than a 6-lane looping highway interchange, not to mention rail infrastructure is way narrower than a similar capacity road to begin with.

    Actually, Canada used to have pretty good rural rail transport pre WWII, on par with rural Europe in the same time period. Passenger and freight trains used the same tracks without issue before the rise of precision scheduled railroading (which was implemented purely to save costs and gives lower quality freight service than the conventional system). You can thank CN and CP for being openly hostile to passenger rail nowadays.

    HiddenLayer5,

    A car takes up at least the width of two bikes by default. Why do they have the right to do that while bikes don’t?

    Maybe we should focus more on overall efficiency and sustainability of our transport systems, and by that metric, cars shouldn’t even exist. A four lane road takes up the same width as a two track rail corridor and mixed use pedesterian/bike paths on either side, but can transport far more people per hour than private cars while being both cheaper in the long run and more environmentally friendly.

    HiddenLayer5,
    @HiddenLayer5@lemmy.ml avatar

    It’s especially safer for the cyclists who risk getting side swiped and crushed by drivers trying to avoid going into the adjacent lane, and since cyclists have no steel box surrounding them, it’s a one sided battle that the car initiated in the first place. Riding side by side forces the car to do a normal, legal overtake by moving into the next lane.

    HiddenLayer5,
    @HiddenLayer5@lemmy.ml avatar

    Those kinds of streets are actually the safest for everyone because they enforce lower speeds and more attentive driving than any posted speed limit ever can. People don’t give two shits about speed laws and will drive as fast as they feel they can, so when the road is not conducive to driving fast, surprise surprise people don’t drive fast and collisions are rarely deadly.

    So, you realize that the expected action from everyone on the road almost everywhere, regardless of the type of vehicle you’re using, is to pull to the side and stop as soon as you hear sirens specifically to prevent people from blocking emergency vehicles right? And since bikes are smaller and more nimble, they can do that much more effectively than a car.

    Regardless, real world data shows that there are far more cases of cars blocking emergency vehicles than bikes, so you’re demonizing the wrong mode of transport on behalf of the ambulances here.

    HiddenLayer5,
    @HiddenLayer5@lemmy.ml avatar

    It’s far easier, cheaper, faster, and more space efficient to build a pedestrian or bike over/underpass than one for cars. A pedestrian overbridge is usually a community project with city involvement, a car overbridge is at the very least a city/country project potentially with state or federal funding.

    I’ll actively make sure to keep you safe from my vehicle

    As someone who cycles on the road, I don’t trust you. Not in the slightest. Far too many close calls with cars trying to “sneak” by me because “oh I’m sure there’s plenty of room to the right” even in a bike-oriented city. I ride alone the vast majority of the time but having someone ride beside would actually make me feel safer because it means you actually have to perform a legal overtake which involves moving into the passing lane. Also, drivers are distracted all the time and I absolutely do not trust that every driver will actually notice a bike that’s off to their side when drivers are prone to straight up miss traffic lights that are right in front of their eyeline.

    Wouldn’t it be easy to convert the code to any language if this was the case though? Any human-language programming is already an abstraction, so why can’t a programming language be abstracted to more than one human language? Literally just swap the command words out for words in the other language, seems like something modern IDEs can trivially do if a language like that existed.

    Also, non-English speaking countries exist. Some have actually developed programming languages in their own language so the idea of non-English programming isn’t exactly unheard of. There is no reason that code that won’t be edited by English speakers should always be written in English, it’s not like it’s the one perfect human language for interfacing with computers or anything. So I suspect that should this become a reality, you wouldn’t even notice anything’s changed unless you live in a non-English speaking country. Either way your company can still always just require code to be in English, the same way companies have requirements for formatting and software design philosophies.

    I prefer Klingon. I’s a more threatening language which keeps the computer in line.
