I’m seeing a lot of reports from users of Huawei and Honor devices have reported that their phones are incorrectly identifying Google apps as Trojan malware, specifically labeled as TrojanSMS-PA. According to the alert, this “malicious software” has the ability to send SMS messages without user consent.

Sounds like there’s a good chance that you may need to apply a method I use when dealing people who believe in conspiracy theories. It’s largely a psychological thing, and it has very little to do with proof, evidence, logic, reasoning and science. No amount of evidence is ever going to solve a problem that is psychological in nature. Religious cults and conspiracy groups share some characteristics, so maybe this is applicable in her case too.

The idea is that people believe in crazy BS because that makes them a member of a group. That gives them an identity and makes them feel like they’re a privileged group for knowing some “hidden truth” about something. It also produces an “us against them” dynamic between the in-group and the out-group. Many individuals in these groups also have sub-clinical psychosis, narcissism or paranoia accompanied by anxiety and loneliness. This setup means that they find these BS nonsense groups appealing, and that the misguided beliefs become essentially bullet proof. Fighting against these beliefs will only make them stronger.

These people need therapy more than evidence.

These people might be in a vulnerable spot, so help and support are the types of things they really need. Be a human to another human. Provide social interaction, friendship and understanding.

Facts and debate will only push them further away from reality and deeper into a fantasy realm of their own. They find it appealing, but it won’t actually address their problems.

Just be kind. Be a human. Ask them how their day went. Listen to their worries. You don’t have to be a psychologist or pull any complex therapy maneuvers. Leave that to the professionals. Just having a normal every day chitchat can be surprisingly helpful to someone who is living in a completely different version of reality.

Absolutely. Fear and uncertainty are a huge part of many conspiracy theories. It’s actually quite human to be uncomfortable with uncertainty.

However, in the case of Conspiratorial Thinking (CT), that uncertainty just goes wild and the person in question will seek out unorthodox methods to cope with it. Even if the explanation is complete BS, it’s still more comforting than having no explanation at all. It’s comforting and appealing, but it does not solve the underlying problem, and that’s why people with CT have a hard time getting back to normal thinking.

The world is big, scary and full of complex interactions. If you can come up with a miserably flimsy excuse of an explanation that will at least calm you down, you’re absolutely going to hold on to it. Humans are pretty bad at tolerating uncertainty, and some people will feel absolutely devastated in the face of global economic turmoil and political unrest. Some people will go to great lengths to mitigate uncertainty, and resorting to CT isn’t even the most extreme example of this behavior.

That’s true. The feeling of community plays an important part in many conspiracy theories. Humans are social animals, so social interaction is essential for wellbeing. If you’re lonely, you’ll naturally crave for a sense of community, and that’s exactly what many conspiracy theories will provide. Alternatively, you could build a kite and go to the nearest park and talk to all the other people flying their kites, but it’s a lot easier to watch conspiracy videos and join those forums.

On top of that, there’s a strong sense of in-group vs. out-group. That’s basically just a modern version of tribalism. It’s the usual “us against them” setup all over again.

Long before the APIcalypse, I was thinking of quitting Reddit. Now that everything went downhill, that decision became super easy.

I wasn’t really getting that much benefit out of Reddit, so it wasn’t a big deal. Spending time there was more like bad habit to me. The mere thought of paying for a bad habit sounds so absurd that quitting would have been absolutely mandatory at that point.

Fortunately though, Reddit already made the process so much easier simply buy kicking out my favorite client app.

When I joined Reddit I noticed that it’s too easy to end up doomscrolling and arguing with idiots. That’s why I stayed away from r/all and any sub that’s all about news and/politics. The only exception was r/europe, because I think it’s good to know something about the region that actually influences my life.

In order to avoid wasting time on stupid idiont nonsense, I focused on science and technology subs along with some very specific niche subs. That way Reddit was actually able to provide some benefit from time to time.

I made a Lemmy account before the Reddit Blackout, and I’ve been here ever since. After the blackout ended, I visited Reddit every week at first, but now it’s more like once a month at most. In order to make the transition faster, I unsubscribed from everything except all the protest, blackout, API etc. related subs. So if I go to Reddit now, I’ll just see people complaining about Reddit. If I go to r/all it’s about as useless as it was years ago, so there’s no reason to spend time in there.

It’s a very forgiving method, unlike the moka pot. If you use a scale, and keep all numbers reasonable, the result will be reasonably good too. Finer details don’t really matter very much unless you’re highly trained in tasting finer flavor notes. Most people can’t tell if the temperature, particle size or extraction time was a little bit off.

Moka pot is a very different beast. It’s very easy to go from delicious coffee to bitter rat poison in a few seconds if you’re not paying attention.

If you keep on using your moka pot that way, you can get great coffee every time. You just need to keep an eye on it. Unfortunately, it’s very easy to screw it up, whereas with the areropress screwing it up requires borderline criminal negligence. As long as you weigh the grinds and water, AP produces very consistent results for me. If you happen to be an experienced taster, you can probably notice if the grind size, temperature or extraction time is a little bit off.

I’ve tried a bunch of side-by-side comparisons and I can tell you that I’m not quite that experienced, so I don’t need to worry about the finer details that much. As long as both weights are within a reasonable range, the coffee ends up being really good every time.

Speaking of buying weird niche items from Amazon: I’ve ordered spare parts and other weird and obscure electronics from Amazon so many times that now they think I’m a company and that I should have a company account.

How did this happen? If I want to buy normal stuff, I’ll walk to a normal store and buy it there. If I need something a bit more special, I’ll probably find it somewhere within a 2000 km radius. If nobody sells what I need, I’ll try Amazon. That’s why my shopping history looks like I’m running some special company.

Things might roll along smoothly until the old contract expires and it’s time to negotiate a new one between the unions and employers. That’s when things could get spicy. Tesla demands that the employees are treated as slaves and company property, while the unions demand proper wages, maternity leave, siestas and lots of other things. Obviously, Tesla isn’t going to agree to any of that, and the feeling will be mutual on both sides of the table. Usually this results in a strike, and now we’re talking about a spicy turn of events. Can’t wait to see how Tesla would handle that.

Yattee is great if you don’t care about logging in.

If you do, there are still ways to block the ads by using an ad blocker for Safari or even using a different browser such as avast, opera or brave. You may need to tweak some settings, so it’s not guaranteed to be a plug and play experience. Even if a browser works with iOS, it might not work in iPadOS, so be prepared to try lots of different things.

They’re all surrounded by controversies, so obviously you shouldn’t use any of them as your main browser. However, using a shady browser for nothing other than watching YT with a specific account mitigates the privacy issues to some extent. Due to the annoyingly sandboxy nature of iOS and iPadOS, normal spyware isn’t going to be able do much there, so I wouldn’t be too worried about that. If these apps pull some real exploits to get to my data, that’s a different matter alltogether.

Seriously though, limiting the macro length to something reasonable should work, but it’s also guaranteed to make some people mad. I’m sure there’s at least one user who is working on something absurdly obscure that requires a macro long enough to reach beyond the edge of the observable universe.

My solution is to make the default behavior sensible, while proving a special option for that one guy. Just limit it for the average user, but not for everyone.

Once I found some nice maple leaves, so I put them in a cheap photo frame and hung them on the wall. It looked nice, do I expanded on the idea and started doing lots of these picture frames with dry leaves in them. The best one I have is an A4 paper completely covered in nettle leaves. They also form a fish scale pattern, which makes it look really cool.

I actually had a W10 phone as my work phone. I had no issues with the OS, but app availability was absolutely abysmal. All the crazy W8 touch optimizations suddenly made a lot of sense. Too bad it died so soon.

The word for this thing is “pareidolia”. It refers to those situations when one thing looks like something completely different. Normally, people use it when seeing faces in clouds, but it applies to lots of different kinds of misidentification too. If a rock looks like a house, that’s also pareidolia.

I think you’re right. Reddit is in a really tough spot now that we’re living the early days of AI. IMO Reddit should make their own LLM and call it Snoo or something. This way, people could asks Snoo to solve all their tech issues.
