GreyEyedGhost,

I agree, the families should get the support they need, but therapy isn’t free here. I can agree if this man lives in a small community, it would be easier for everyone if he left. But that’s leaving the town, not the country. Oh, there’s no law to require that? Unfortunate, but that’s no excuse to abuse the law instead.

GreyEyedGhost,

If this intersection has been talked about for over a decade, it sounds like a lot of people got lucky and one person got unlucky, causing the deaths of a bunch of people.

There was a notorious corner near where I live. A family friend was going to work and taking his kids to school, as well as another kid, I believe. He and most or all of the people got hit by a truck and died. 4 or 5 people, obviously devastating for the families. Also not the first accident at that corner, major or minor. (This is a major intersection, thousands of vehicles a day, so even infrequent events happen a lot.)Sure, I could get angry at the truck driver. Alternatively, I could get frustrated with the local government for leaving an obviously dangerous intersection unchanged. It’s finally getting altered, presumably to make it safer.

GreyEyedGhost,

First and foremost, mob justice is rarely justice. Second, as the other poster noted, this has been a problematic intersection for over a decade. This guy was just the unlucky one to have a bunch of people die because of his bad judgement. Third, when is the last time someone was deported over a negligence conviction of any kind?

I get that the families of these victims never want to see him again, but it’s a big country. Their desires can be met without deporting the guy.

I’m not against deporting criminals, but I believe they should present a danger to society. I’m pretty sure this guy is never going to do something like this again, if for no other reason than him not being allowed to drive professionally (and if he is still allowed to drive professionally, that’s another, different failure of the system).

GreyEyedGhost,

How many different languages are spoken within a 1000 km of the UK? How large are those communities? How many of the people from other communities also speak English? Ask the same questions for Canada and the answers are 3 with any significant population, less than 10% for one and is spread across two countries while being the official language of the third country for the other, and the vast majority of them for two of the three countries.

The North American anglophone attitude is very pragmatic, as is the British anglophone’s. The same applies for the North American francophone attitude, although they like to complain like they aren’t a minority, both nationally and across the continent. And if a company from Quebec wants to expand outside the province’s borders, requiring their employees to speak French is going to reduce their candidate pool and hence increase their payroll costs, or their leaders are going to have to learn English which, as we’ve already discussed, they already mostly do.

You and I can talk about what we’d like to see, or how things should be, and we might even agree about it. But this is how things are.

GreyEyedGhost,

I have a cat that likes olives, particularly spicy ones.

GreyEyedGhost,

That’s a bit of a non-issue when smartphone penetration is as high as it is.

GreyEyedGhost,

I mostly agree with you, but I’m pretty sure NMS took home about $15M in the first month ($78M sales in first month). If they hadn’t, they might have closed shop, too. Now, we have a small group of millionaires who can make whatever they want.

GreyEyedGhost,

I’m not letting Google off the hook, but Apple could also open the standard for iMessage and bypassed the whole problem. But they’d rather lock in customers than allow everyone to communicate securely and effectively.

GreyEyedGhost,

You would be right if SMS was still relevant in Europe (and asia and africa, I think). That would be kind of like saying a phone isn’t very good because it doesn’t support usenet.

GreyEyedGhost,

There are plenty of standardized communication protocols. There are far less in the smartphone world, which is why we have this problem. Imagine if you couldn’t do voice calls between AT&T and Comcast, North America and Europe, or Apple and Android. Now why on earth would anyone think that text messaging should be that way, or shouldn’t have been standardized decades ago?

GreyEyedGhost,

I’m not sure about separatist movements in the West now, but they have been around for over 40 years. The primary concerns were lack of consideration at the national level, which isn’t a surprising outcome when about half the representatives come from two provinces. It doesn’t make their concerns any less valid.

GreyEyedGhost,

As usual with our charter rights, they’re really just recommendations.

GreyEyedGhost,

Third row, behind DeForest Kelly? Can’t be sure.

This may seem kind of stupid but I am kind of stupid, is there a list somewhere of phrases that are stupid or insensitive racially or gender biased?

I just got up from conversation with a couple of older black men, that I said “well I got to go back to work and start cracking the whip.” And it occurred to me then that it was probably a really insensitive stupid thing to say....

GreyEyedGhost,

The Spanish community having to pick a new name for a color (as if the new one wouldn’t be used the same way).

GreyEyedGhost,

So, the sleigh driver who wastaking his family for an hour-long ride was training the animal? It was also used to make recalcitrant or reluctant work animals perform better while working. You could call that training, I suppose, but it’s a bit of a stretch. It also wasn’t uncommon for race horses to be whipped to make them go faster. I don’t know if it still is, it’s been far too long since I bothered to check anything horse race related. But cracking the whip was used for a very long time to get animals to work. Also people, which is the problem.

GreyEyedGhost,

I was talking about history, backed by common knowledge which can be easily corroborated, and not very much my opinion about those acts, except the last sentence.

Also, people are animals. Perhaps you could use that as a reason to treat animals better instead of as an excuse to treat people worse.

GreyEyedGhost,

Sure I am. It’s not like the first child abuse case in America wasn’t fought using an animal cruelty law…

GreyEyedGhost,

Well, this all started when you displayed ignorance about animals, which I tried to correct. Then I just followed along with your meanderings. Now l, if you want to back up and explain how I’m wrong about whips being cracked at animals (and people) in the context of getting them to perform work instead of solely to train them, hence the term “cracking the whip” being a euphemism for getting back to work and not solely getting back to training, please do.

If you’d rather ignore the original conversation and instead talk about your reply, please inform me how my pointing out your ignorance of animal husbandry has any bearing on me comparing people to slaves, or how that would be out of context when discussing the phrase “cracking the whip.”

GreyEyedGhost,

Nothing I said touched on its offensiveness or lack thereof, merely the inaccuracies of your statements about the historical context. Of course, in your mind, that equates to me approving of or ignoring it.

GreyEyedGhost,

Vexillology may not be for you.

GreyEyedGhost,

Insecure like someone with a…?

GreyEyedGhost,

Same for Canada. “Why’s should I pay taxes for this news service I always disagree with?”

GreyEyedGhost,

This is an ignorant opinion. My first cell phone (about 30 years ago) had a battery pack about as big as my current cell phone, and had a capacity of 500 mAh. My current phone has a bigger screen, the rest of the phone, and a 4000 mAh battery. How do you suppose that happened if none of those new battery technologies ever panned out?

GreyEyedGhost,

Many of them are also like these announcements, just 5 or 10 years before they show up in batteries.

GreyEyedGhost,

Our experience about internal combustion engines are the same. We get lower emissions, better mileage, more horsepower in a given form factor, and vehicles get bigger, have more features, and maybe a smaller gas tank and they feel like they have the same capacity as 60 years ago.

Likewise with phones. The phone I described had a 24-hour capacity, just like the one I have now. But the old one could only do phone calls and SMS, and had an amber LED display. Now my phone has more power, capacity, and connectivity than my first home computer…and needs to be charged daily.

People become accustomed to new things, and manufacturers design their products to utilize new capabilities in the way they think is most marketable. My phone could have a 10000 mAh battery, but then people would complain about weight and thickness.

GreyEyedGhost,

“This is my stick. There are many like it, but this one is mine…”

GreyEyedGhost,

That’s not how laundering works, but it probably isn’t laundering. The product is the excuse, the price difference is where the laundering happens.

GreyEyedGhost,

They wouldn’t, except for laundering on a scale too small to be worth going after.

GreyEyedGhost,

I don’t mean to be critical, but you complain about having to use multiple instances, then refer to Facebook and Twitter, and I can only assume you used Reddit or something similar, as well. So, two or three silos are two or three silos, whether it be those I listed or Lemmy, Mastodon and kbin (is that even the same as the other two? I don’t know). Now, I can appreciate you wanting something more unified, but we didn’t have that before and we’re closer now.

OTOH, if you’re talking multiple instances of a single fediverse app such as Lemmy, that’s entirely up to you and where you decide to hang your hat. I pretty much just use one and it works well enough as long as defederation doesn’t hit you.

GreyEyedGhost,

Consumables make economists happy because of all the repeat sales.

GreyEyedGhost,

War is the worst form of diplomacy, but can be the only solution if the other party has wholly unacceptable proposals. Given the ultimate choice Ukraine and others have is capitulation or war, what would you have them do? Keep in mind that the last time Ukraine was under Soviet rule, little things like Holodomor happened, so capitulation may not be the life-saving option you’d think it would be.

GreyEyedGhost,

Part of this is people continue to believe cats can’t be trained. It’s harder, but possible. It also means you have to work harder to train out bad behaviour (and they will only mostly stop while you’re around). So getting your cat to not bite you can be done, as well as training them to not go on the counter when you can see it.

Cats are also domesticated differently than most animals, and will absolutely, literally shit on things they know you care about if you piss them off.

GreyEyedGhost,

As I said, cats are domesticated differently. Current speculation is they self-domesticated during the beginning of agriculture. What this means for us is that, unlike dogs, it’s more of an agreement between us and them, and they will make it known if they don’t agree with the situation. This is the nugget of truth behind “Dogs have owners, cats have staff.” So, as with dogs, if your lifestyle isn’t acceptable to them, you shouldn’t own them. The difference is what is acceptable.

GreyEyedGhost,

I don’t think I will ever want to eat that, but no one is making me, so have at it!

GreyEyedGhost,

…they were a premium exclusively for 3D shows. There was no change in price for regular shows, beyond the usual inflationary increases.

GreyEyedGhost,

So you watched the whole movie and didn’t come to the conclusion that she was either the same species or a crossbreed? Now, I don’t want to watch two dogs fucking, but I don’t see how them doing so is immoral.

GreyEyedGhost,

I’m not genetically compatible with monkeys. We are, however, genetically compatible with colored people. So you’re okay with racism if the differences are big enough?

Do you think the shows authors didn’t actually think about that comparison? With the main character’s colored friend in that time period?

  • GreyEyedGhost,

Username checks out, however the message content is highly informative…

I've lately been making my git commit messages with AI (reddthat.com)

It writes more informative commits than I could ever make so I’m just reading what it says and mostly copy/pasting completely most of the time, I write all of the changes I’ve made into an LLM with a large context window and it write a very detailed commit not just with a title but with bullet points describing each of the...

    GreyEyedGhost,

There is a saying, which I don’t generally agree with. Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach. That said, writing good code and describing code effectively are two different skills, and there is no guarantee any given individual will have both.

    GreyEyedGhost,

Windows is trying to both maintain backwards compatibility and lock-in. That’s pretty hard at the best of times, moreso when you didn’t initially have lock-in. If I can get my games working on Linux (i hear it’spossible, but I need time), the only reason I’ll have to use Windows will be work-related.

    GreyEyedGhost,

Over/underrated is only important if you think other people’s opinions should be a guide for your tastes.

I like Taylor Swift (her fans are crazy), Imagine Dragons, and Nickelback (a decent song so long it had to be released over multiple CDs). I also like Bryan Adam’s (how many songs can you slip 69 into). I never heard of AJR, but that’s just a good reason to try them out. Say what you will about any of them, doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy them.

    GreyEyedGhost,

I’m pretty happy here and would like to contribute. It sounds like a couple bucks a month from some portion of the community would be enough for this instance to stay afloat (perhaps more to support the admins doing work I don’t want to), and I’d much rather do that than have to contemplate dealing with Reddit on a regular basis. Please, admits, reach some consensus so we can help support this effort.

    GreyEyedGhost,

Said it before, will say it again. I’ll vote for a chimp in a red shirt if that’s what it takes to keep this guy from being the PM.

    GreyEyedGhost,

Nice to see I’m not the only person who’s noticed the similarity between Calvinism and Auschwitz.
