FringeTheory999,

No. i seriously hate this shit. This community is trash. You’re all completely awful.

FringeTheory999,

wow. you’re a straight up piece of shit.

FringeTheory999,

don’t worry. some day you’ll come to terms with it. Then you’ll know that there is no hope for you, and thing will get easier after that.

What's the best petty revenge for a neighbour that constantly plays loud music but doesn't answer the door when you try asking them to turn it down?

We’ve tried the usual of calling police (three times), inviting them over to hear how loud it is (they agreed that it was very loud), asking to at least reduce the bass, blasting our own music (not sustainable) and so on. Sometimes it works for a day but inevitably it’s back to the usual....

FringeTheory999,

You should try going in your house and watching TV. It’s a subtle revenge, but it’s the only one that will yield a result that doesn’t end with you red faced and embarrassed, Karen. if the cops didn’t step in it was probably during the day, and thus not a violation… The neighbor doesn’t have to answer his door just because you knock on it, and you can get fucked. take home lessons: 1. get fucked Karen. 2. don’t point cops at anything you don’t want to die you cretin. It’s dangerous dipshit.

FringeTheory999,

cops are cops wherever you go. they’ll kill you too, just ask Mark Duggan. It doesn’t matter what continent you’re on.

FringeTheory999,

And you’re the guy that calls dangerous thugs to your neighbors house because you don’t like his tunes. I’m sitting pretty in comparison. even if the made up bullshit you said were true. Don’t call cops to peoples homes asshole. You’re just causing trouble, and your lucky no one has died.

FringeTheory999,

every police officer in every country is armed with a weapon of some sort. A cudgel is a weapon.

FringeTheory999,

every cop in every country is two things: 1. a thug who is willing to commit violent acts. 2. a dangerous authoritarian.

FringeTheory999,

It’s where all the stuff is. We like stuff, varieties of stuff of all kinds. including types of people. Conservatives hate stuff, and are generally anti-variety, so they stay where the stuff isn’t. they want to feel safe from the stuff, and they never feel safe unless there is a substantial buffer zone between them and stuff and a stockpile of guns to protect themselves from stuff, or books about stuff.

FringeTheory999,

I’ve lived in both rural and urban areas. Rural areas do indeed suck. People there lead boring purposeless lives so they’re always up in your business. If you keep to yourself they’ll just make shit up. This is not a problem in the city.

FringeTheory999,

the idea was to sign up for the free trial, then cancel right away so that you don’t forget to cancel at the end of the trial. previously, in most cases, the trial would run it’s course and you could access it for the duration. Since companies rely on people forgetting to cancel (it’s the only reason anyone even has an apple TV subcription), they’re trying to make this simple life hack more difficult.

FringeTheory999,

Adequately paid when you account for all their OT and other forms of compensation. plus the perks of being unfirable and immune to 99.9999999999% of prosecution. Since police corruption is systemic, and these cops are a part of that system, these cops are by definition corrupt.

I'm worried that in the future we will be forced to use smartphones just like in China

In China, you can’t exist without a smartphone, because for all existential things you have to do (paying bills, buying tickets etc.) , you are forced to use the almighty wechat app. Smartphones are a tool to manipulate and to spy on the population. It is a tool utilized by the ruling class, to control the masses. I hate the...

FringeTheory999,

Try and access your US tax records online without a contract cell phone and see how far you get.

FringeTheory999,

lol. this guy thinks the internet is “the future” and “progress” it was both of these things 30 years ago. now it’s just a heap of old shit.

People who back into parking spots: Why?

To me, it seems objectively easier to pull into a parking space forward and then back out of the space when you are ready to leave. You don’t have to line up with the lines while driving backwards, and it’s easier to keep from hitting other cars as well. So why back in? To me, the only advantage I can think of is that you...

FringeTheory999,

A. That’s not what the social contract is, and 2. There is no social contract.

FringeTheory999,

Hey man, we’ll quit fighting when they do.

"Block The Rich" is like an ad-blocker, but for obscenely wealthy people with overinflated egos. (lemm.ee)

About 8 months ago I got pretty tired of seeing billionaire spam online. I could not bear to read about yet another rich guy who launched themselves (or their $200,000 car) into outer space 🚀 . I did not care about their expert opinion on the latest meme coin back then. I do not care about their expert opinion on the dangers...

FringeTheory999,

Well, while I acknowledge that it’s important to know what the rich are doing to undermine society, I like that the app would give me control over what I’m seeing, and when I see it. I think if it gives the option to unhide stuff so that I can digest it when I am best able to, than it is a good thing. Like a NSFW filter. It could just have a “show billionaire related content” button on it. Besides, if their mucking about is impacting something that’s important to you, it’ll probably be referenced in content you’re actively seeking.

FringeTheory999,

Which she readily acknowledges in the first two minutes of the video, right before explaining the role machine learning plays in physics. It’s definitely worth watching the whole video. She’s one of my favorite science communicators because she’s pretty transparent about which topics are within her area of expertise and which topics are on the peripheral.

FringeTheory999,

she is awesome. I think she’s the most engaging science communicator i’ve found in years, and it’s because her videos are so earnest and stripped down. She’s really awesome.

FringeTheory999,

right, that’s only true in the actually literally completely true sense. I have a love hate relationship with AI, I use several of them. As far as I’m concerned AI stands for “assets and inspiration” because that’s the only use for it. It can generate royalty free assets to chop up and use in art, and it can help brainstorm ideas if you’re feeling uninspired, but it’s actually really terrible at creating anything new or interesting on it’s own. There’s a difference between art and content. And what AI generates is content. Stuff to fill space. It’s not going to replace novelists any time soon, but if you make your living writing meaningless ad copy that just fills space then your job is in serious trouble. It can’t create art because messaging is a fundamental part of art and AI has nothing to say. Artists and writers do a lot more than just regurgitate their influences and copy patterns. They also have a point to make. When you engage with a piece of art, the artists is trying to say something, make commentary on the world, or evoke a specific emotional response in the audience. There is intention in art, but “AI” in it’s current and likely in it’s future state is incapable of approaching any task with intention. It’s just a machine learning tool spitting out formulaic patterns. It’s great if you want to create 250 stylized variations of the letter “B”, so artists can use AI to speed up their brainstorming phase and thus it can be a useful tool for artists, but it will never create anything new or interesting without a heaping helping of human interference.

AI will be writing shitty superhero movies that fill up space for the next thousand years, because those kinds of movies are just content. Aesthetically pleasing content, but still just content. It’ll never write anything that you haven’t seen a hundred times before.

FringeTheory999,

It won’t go the way of segway. It’ll go the way of FLASH. Flash was a great tool for creating all sorts of engaging content, but the reason that it went away is because of the sorts of people that adopted it and how it was used. By that I mean advertisers. So people began to associate flash with sketchy advertisements, scams, and obnoxious web design. So even though it was great for all sorts of things, people abandoned it because the people who used it the most were making crap. AI will go like that. Not all AI is equal and some of it will be around forever, but I suspect that most LLMs will run their course because they’re going to be used by advertisers and other ne’er do wells to make cheap content cheaply and people will get sick of that pretty fast.

If I go onto meds, will I still be able to rely on hyperfocus to accomplish tasks or master new skills?

I’ve realized that I kind of rely on my periods of hyperfocus to complete things (when I’m able to direct it toward the right task). If I go onto medication, will I still be able to hyperfocus? As destructive as hyperfocus can be when it’s pointed at the wrong thing, it’s like a superpower when it’s pointed at the...

FringeTheory999,

hmmm. so if the meds don’t last that long I could conceivably plan blocks of unmedicated time when I don’t have responsibilities… then I could use that time to let my mind wander or hyperfocus whichever the case may be. I appreciate the discoveries I make when my mind wanders, and I appreciate the creative things I can accomplish when my mind hyperfocuses, it’s just that neither of these things are conducive to existing in a modern society that’s constantly making needy demands. In your case, does a strategy like that sound pheasible?

FringeTheory999,

oof. youtube counts too? That stings. that’s a huge to do list, so I’ll probably start a lot smaller but I really like how you’re basically leaving your future self a trail of breadcrumbs to follow from one task to another.

FringeTheory999,

eh. I already have insomnia. that’s just tuesday for me.

FringeTheory999,

lol. get out of my brain!

FringeTheory999,

that’s awesome. if that’s true I’m sold. I spend a lot of cpu cycles trying to figure out ways to flip that switch on.

FringeTheory999,

Quite true. nonetheless there are some very interesting responses here. this is just the summary I questioned the AI for a couple of hours some of the responses were pretty fascinating, and some question just broke it’s little brain. There’s too much to screen shot, but maybe I’ll post some highlights later.

You can't uninstall this software without being forced to participate in their survey (lemmy.world)

I initially only installed “Comodo Firewall” but for some reason they also installed a “Comodo Dragon Browser”, which I did not consent to. I always choose the “advanced” installation to uncheck bloatware, but in this case there was none and when you try to uninstall the browser, they force you to participate in...

FringeTheory999,

If you give them data points you’re rewarding the behavior. You shouldn’t have to give any response because the reason you’re uninstalling is none of the software developers business. So OP had the option of giving a canned response, or saying “other”, but won’t except “other” without some explanation of what the “other” reason is. Which is none of their fucking business.

FringeTheory999,

If you give an exploitative company information, they are not going to use that information to make their company better, they’re going to use that information to improve their grift. They won’t end their exploitation, they’ll only learn how to reduce your resistance to their exploitation. Any information you give them will only be used against you or people like you. Best to avoid it entirely and just tell them to fuck themselves twenty times in a row. They’ll still have to parse the response, and it’s impossible for them to exploit or misunderstand it.

FringeTheory999,

I was blown away when I first saw this meme. I had no idea habits were supposed to LITERALLY become automatic. When people would tell me “Do something every day until it becomes a habit” I thought they meant “Do something until you stop forgetting to do it” Not “do something until your body just takes over and autopilots through it and you never have to think about it again”. Now I really understand why productivity advice is so useless. They’re all designed to “hack a habit loop” and I have no habit loop.

It actually kinda pissed me off when I learned what it’s like for neurotypical people. I felt like I’ve been unfairly misled and then judged for being misled.

FringeTheory999,

ugh, I constantly forget to eat. People would ask “how the hell can you FORGET to eat, for two days” and I’d be like. “three days… I think”.

FringeTheory999,

Executive dysfunction is a symptom of lots of issues, you might well be neurodivergent to some degree. For me it’s Executive dysfunction. Time blindness. and a degree of face blindness. All of these things are super disruptive to my life.

FringeTheory999,

Dude. Three days isn’t even my record, and I don’t feel hungry during that time, like at all. Or if I do it’s this vaguely distant feeling that isn’t nearly as important as whatever I’m hyper focusing on at the moment.

FringeTheory999,

I’ll hyperfocus on a new thing, like playing an instrument, or painting, or whatever and I’ll become very good at the thing very quickly. Then I’ll walk away and forget I even have an instrument, or forget that I like to paint. As a result I have a fuck ton of skills and I hardly ever use any of them. Hell, I learned book binding. I bound leather books that were gorgeous, and then after three or four I never did it again. Oh, then there was that month where I learned video editing and production, which I also never did again. I was a draftsman for awhile, where I got really good at autoCAD, and aside from a few things I did for pay I haven’t used that skill in a decade.

FringeTheory999,

Playing an instrument or doing art gives you a dopamine boost and gets you hyper focused. When we’re hyper focused we’re like learning superheroes as long as we’re hyper focusing on a single thing, and that thing is novel.

FringeTheory999,

This might actually explain how I dabbled with smoking so much as a teen but never picked up the habit.

FringeTheory999,

My teeth are all rotten because this has never been the case for me. It’s a chore that I have to actively decide to do every day, it’s a decision I have to make. There’s a phenomenon called “decision fatigue” that basically means you can only make so many decisions in a day before your brain just shuts down and refuses to make another one. Since neurodivergent people have to make more decisions and can’t rely on habits to lift decision making off of our shoulders we often hit that wall of decision fatigue and just kinda shut down.

If you add disincentives, like the fact that brushing your teeth is an inherently unpleasant thing to do, it can be very difficult to stick with it. Hence, rotten teeth and all of the associate health issues that come along with having rotten teeth.

FringeTheory999,

Yeah. I’m super skinny. I have trouble keeping weight on. I’m 6’1, male, and like 144 lbs. It’s not good for ya.

FringeTheory999,

My girlfriend takes me out to dinner twice a week. Most of my calories come from those two weekly nights out. Add in my time blindness and I’ll think that I ate breakfast in the morning, but then realize that it was the previous morning and that I just never noticed the passage of time.

FringeTheory999,

My situation was compounded by some pretty extreme poverty. My family were basically transients in the eighties and we lived in campgrounds. So it’s not like they were taking me to the dentist when I had a toothache. I stayed in school though, and once I went to a field trip to a dentist and learned about teeth and gums, yadda yadda. Anyway when I came back to camp I asked my parents “Hey why don’t you guys ever take me to a dentist” and they straight up said “What? You got dentist money kid?”

lol. Ah. Nostalgia.

FringeTheory999,

I think the rubric is basically whether or not the behavior is disruptive to your life. Many neurotypical people do those things from time to time, but if it becomes overwhelming and pervasive, and keeps you from functioning effectively, it’s time for an evaluation.

FringeTheory999,

Eh. It’s in the rear view. This meme is on point though. I had no idea any of that stuff was even abnormal until I hit high school and started talking about it. It’s crazy what kids will assume is normal because they don’t have outside frame of reference.
