I saw a clip of it happening on Safari.

Wish this got upvoted more tbh. The devs of Pulse Browser are trying to make an environment where making a Firefox fork would be easier, but it’s not like Chromium where the engine could be easily embedded. I’ve also heard Second Life had to move to Chromium for their embedded browser after using Gecko and having problems with it.

Those two aren’t bad, IMO. It lines up with what people think their principles should be.

You want something to make you worry? They’re integrating Fakespot, an AI-based review scanner that Mozilla acquired a while back, into Firefox. Never mind that industries are having problems auto-scanning content for AI generated prose…

I think the main issue is the people here suggesting and evangelising Firefox not really listening to those who aren’t, which frustrates the other person. I think I fell into this with the fediverse, in the early days of Elon fucking up Twitter. There are perfectly valid reasons to not use Firefox right now. Maybe one browser or other works better for them, or has that one killer feature they can’t live without. Firefox has that for some of us, too. Or Firefox has some weird quirk or bug that other browsers don’t.

I personally use Firefox and Vivaldi. Vivaldi has tab tiling which is great for when I’m in the zone adding music to MusicBrainz or RYM, and it’s not too clunky either. Tile Tabs WE doesn’t cut it for me. For casual browsing, vertical tabs is nice and I use Firefox + Sidebery for that, which is better than Vivaldi’s vertical tab implementation.

Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X headphones. Love the sound profile on them.

iirc sudo has a bunch of quotes to spit out when an incorrect password is typed. Gentoo exposes that feature with the offensive USE flag.

Edit: Looks like Pick is sourcing the weirder names from this site: glitch.com/~name-that-color

We need this era back tbh.

I’ll try to explain to the best of my ability, from having used both and figuring things out.

On Atproto, the federation is very much more on the backend, where the Personal Data Servers are interlinked and people access the protocol through bsky.app or some other app they wish to use. They have started rolling out the infrastructure to allow federation between different PDSs and have started moving user data to them. They’ve made for a more predictable, consistent federated experience (which has been a criticism of the ActivityPub’s fediverse), and allowed for a more resilient infrastructure, but unfortunately it’s limited to what Bluesky wants which is just microblogging while ActivityPub is more flexible (see: Mastodon, Lemmy, Funkwhale, PeerTube, Wordpress, etc.) but has the cultural issue of people treating their instance like their own personal forum and not a critical part of the fediverse’s infrastructure.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Well for one, if a feature is implemented in Atproto, it’ll be implemented for the entire federated network. With ActivityPub, there’s inconsistency with the features (You still need Glitch-soc if you want Mastodon with text formatting, for instance) and, while yes it’s cool that I can talk to Lemmy from my Mastodon account, it’s quite a clunky experience IMO and shouldn’t be a selling point to the regular user who just wants to post about what they’re doing.

A technical overview of Atproto can be retrieved here.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

FWIW, Kbin does have some microblogging capabilities - used it a little before joining this instance. I know magazines can have a dedicated microblogging community. I feel like it’s a decent equivalent to Reddit live chats.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Guess I fell for what the fediverse said about that, lol whoops. But thanks!

Messed with it a bit and it still thought Queen Elizabeth was the current reigning monarch in the UK.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Yeah it is and I’m aware, I even asked it that specifically for that cutoff. Also thought Boris Johnson was the prime minister lol

With BlueSky moving towards finally opening up federation, I'm interested in how people feel about it?

Would you be open to the idea of Mastodon, Lemmy, Pixelfed, and other Fediverse platforms adopting the AT protocol in order to federate with it?

If those technical hurdles could be overcome, would you support your instance federating with BlueSky?

Does the same go for other commercially-owned platforms, such as Threads and Tumblr?

@fediverse

Flaky, (edited )
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

As someone who’s used both, the way federation works on Bluesky/Atproto is very different to how ActivityPub works. It’s very much a backend thing, letting that do the heavy lifting and prevent the user from worrying about it as much as you have to here, rather than trying to make its fediverse a whole experience.

As for Tumblr, there was talk about bringing it to the fediverse and Wordpress themselves have already allowed users of their hosted blog service to opt-in to this, but have not done it for Tumblr. And Threads? Well, there was a pact to fediblock Threads because of its ties to Facebook, so there’s that.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Yeah :\

They did mention that they were planning to make Tumblr open-source, which might’ve been why they said that. I could see ActivityPub integration there in that event.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Same. Not to mention that there’s window managers in development if people prefer that. Some examples I know include Sway for those who want something like i3, Wayfire for those who miss Compiz and Hyprland for a more polished tiled experience. Hyprland in particular I’d recommend as I’ve personally had no luck with X.org compositors like Picom - didn’t work with my GPU.

Actually confused kpop fans this way, since IU is the name of a kpop star.

Question to those not in the USA, and who have lived outside the USA.

I’ve been thinking about something and want to check an assumption I have. I only hear directly from other people in the USA, and interract with the global community through memes. How are the gun regulations/laws different from yours in terms of strictness, and do you wish there was more or less where you live?...

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

The UK has really strict laws on firearms AFAIK, you have to either apply for a certificate from the police or surrender them even if you’re an antique collector. The government website ofc does into more detail. I’m not really involved in the firearms debate, so I can’t say if I want more or less. I will say there’s a lot of knife crime in the UK though, enough for it to be a common occurrence on local news and a meme in online circles.

I’m not from here, but in Svalbard, a firearm is a legal requirement due to the bears in the area, but even then the use of it should be a last-resort if all the other bear deterrents have failed. Tom Scott’s got a good video on it.

NVIDIA has been notoriously problematic with Wayland from what I heard. When I bought my current rig I made sure AMD was powering the graphics.

How do y'all deal with programs not supported on Linux?

I’ve been seeing all these posts about Linux lately, and looking at them, I can honestly see the appeal. I’d love having so much autonomy over the OS I use, and customize it however I like, even having so many options to choose from when it comes to distros. The only thing holding me back, however, is incompatibility issues....

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Depends. Steam and Proton handles most games and if not, I’ll check Lutris. FWIW, some games like Doom and RollerCoaster Tycoon (the Sawyer, 2D era) have open-source remakes that work on modern machines.

For regular software, I will try it in WINE and if it provides a good enough experience for daily use, I’ll keep it there. If it doesn’t, for any reason, I’ll stick it in a Windows VM. For instance, Exact Audio Copy will work fine in WINE provided you get .NET 3.5 installed for the MusicBrainz metadata plugin, but MusicBee has severe enough problems (font redirection problems, lag when scrolling, can’t drag tabs) for me that I just use it in a virtual machine or another PC. (I actually have another rig I’m considering using as a “jukebox” machine, since I have macOS on it and use it for Apple Music, so I’m compartmentalising my music to one machine if that makes sense)

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Some old video codecs were proprietary and had to be installed afterwards from a separate repository or package, that might be where that notion is coming from. That being said once the relevant codecs are installed (open-source or proprietary) things just work fine, or you could install VLC or mpv and just call it a day.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Yeah, it gets weird ngl.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Improving the browser doesn’t make money, I guess.

I can get Pocket even if I don’t use it, and Mozilla VPN is essentially Mullvad but still lines up with Mozilla’s principles. But Fakespot is a headscratcher.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

I’m in the same boat. I don’t like them but I don’t hate them either. I just see them as a tool. (you can interpret that how you want lol)

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

When I saw it I had to!

I bought the box set for this game which came with a cartridge a couple years ago. Good thing I’ve got that, now, welp.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Not really, the Switch Taiko games work with either button presses or gyroscope. But Hori does have a taiko drum controller that was bundled with the box set in Asia and Europe. For some reason it’s harder to get the drum in America.

ikr? I have a Don Wada plush on pre-order since early October and the vendor had to delay it to this month. The hell is going on?

What's an alternative to Spotify that doesn't play you the same fucking songs over and over?

I am in an intense love-hate relationship with Spotify. It makes good mixes for me, I have found a lot of great bands that way. BUT IT KEEPS REGURGITATING THE SAME SONGS IN THERE. I know about Song Radios and Artist Radios, so please don’t recommend those. Smart Shuttle doesn’t cut it, either....

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

I know that feeling. I’m torn between Apple Music and Spotify myself. Spotify is just that much more convenient for me but at the same time, so is Apple Music…

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

I quite liked the composition but the whole “old vocals with new production” was throwing me off a bit ngl

Flaky,

KDE, just because it’s a good balance of usability and customisability.

Best service for music if I don't want to listen to what I already know?

I’m currently getting through the free subs. I tried Spotify and didn’t like it. YouTube Music was fine, but would sometimes stop playing and not restart on its own. I’m currently on Amazon Music. It has three months free sub, while other services have only one, but it’s so bad. The recommendations are all complete miss....

@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

I’ve been using Rate Your Music for the past three years now. In mid-2022 they overhauled their recommendation system and it might suit your needs if you put the time into rating things you like and hate.

It uses your release ratings to figure out what genres and descriptors you respond well to, and which ones you don’t like, and uses that to not only recommend you releases you haven’t rated in the genres/descriptors you like, but also releases that are outside your comfort zone to broaden your tastes a bit. I used it briefly as I’ve got a massive backlog and want to focus on that, but I found some great stuff through the recommendation system.

I believe free users and regular (£20/yr) supporters get 100 recommendation, Select supporters (£40/yr) get 200. Both supporter tiers also allow fine-tuning of the recommendations, but I’ve not messed with it. (EDIT: Forgot to mention, you can have generated playlists for Spotify based on your RYM recommendations, and I believe they have intentions to support Apple Music in the future).

I can provide screenshots if you want to take a look.

Generally they’re both the same, just that Arch might need a little more setting up in some aspects, but a lot of what you learned on Endeavour can just be used on Arch.

I just don’t use Reddit at all anymore.

Flaky,

Ehhh, even for that I’ve had issues, even before the API stuff. The solutions I came across either came from casual word of mouth on Discord, tutorials on GitHub or forums other than Reddit.

That annoyed the hell out of me during COVID. Even had family take part in it. The epitome of virtue signalling.

I remember on the other site before it went to shit, NHS staff on there were either laughing at it or, if their trust got any charity funds, complaining about the funds not being used properly.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Same. The moment I got a card with Wifi from Intel, it was so much better.

Flaky,
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

For near-guaranteed compatibility, there are dedicated manufacturers like System76 and Tuxedo. Framework also claims Linux compatibility but for set tested distros (Ubuntu and Fedora).

Generally, anything with Intel/AMD graphics and Intel Wifi is pretty much guaranteed to work in my experience. For laptops, high-DPI displays can be problematic but the fixes are on Wayland which is getting higher priority now.
