Fester,

1998: That would be a waste of a perfectly good cable. Never know when you might need it, so it goes in the box with the others.

2023: The fuck are all these cables for? I’ll make a meme… but only with one. Never know when you might need the others.

Fester,

Always check model numbers against what you think you’re buying. Sometimes they use the same number with a slight change, like a few numbers or letters added to it. If it’s different, that’s the Black Friday version with extra-cheap capacitors and last year’s recycled panel.

Fester,

I don’t know if people even think about voting in terms of campaign promises anymore. They never pull through. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me every fucking 2 years for my entire adult life, shame on me.

Just keep it honest: Not fascist vs fascist. Weed will stay illegal, climate will continue to spiral, wealth gap will continue to increase, healthcare will continue to be abusive, abortion will continue to rely on flimsy court decisions, etc. But at least we’ll keep having elections, so we’ve got that going for us.

I’ve heard good things about Nomad Goods. I have some of their other accessories for iPhone and watch, and it’s the best quality stuff I’ve ever found. I can’t personally recommend the USB-C cables or wall adapters, but I plan to get some soon. I have a leather case, MagSafe mount stand, and a few watch bands. All are incredible, but pricey.

I do have some Anker cables and they’re perfectly fine. Much better than others I’ve tried, including Apple shit. Anker also makes some nice outlet extension/USB adapter combos that are super convenient.

If you want a fancy coiled cable, try Ventec edit: Ventev. It’s amazing for the car - keeps it off the floor.

CableMatters is my go-to when I need something I can’t find above, like a USB extension cable or high-speed HDMI. They don’t feel as premium and are a bit stiff, but they’re reliable, and they just seem to make every option you can think of.

Fester,

Most fruit is bred to be more sugary than necessary, because that’s how humans like it. They also have less fiber and protein as a result. Some zoos won’t even feed their chimps bananas anymore because they get diabetes and tooth decay from human-grade bananas.

Fester,

It should be brewed at 195-205 F, just a bit higher than McDonalds served it.

But normally it would quickly cool down after it’s brewed. Any burning from reaching that temp is from a hot plate exceeding the temp and burning the bits of oil and soot that are in contact with the plate. Water, and I assume coffee, can’t be heated above boiling at 212 F anyway, but the hot plate and carafe or urn parts can, and steam can, and oil can.

Anyway I’m just saying it would be reasonable for fresh and good-tasting coffee to be in that temperature range. But it’s only going to stay there for any length of time if it’s burned on a hot plate or, more ideally, dripped directly into an insulated container.

It’s more likely their coffee tastes like shit because it was badly roasted, ground months ago, has since gone stale and bitter, and is full of unnecessary added chemicals and preservatives, just like the rest of their shit food.

Fester,

This is my problem with YouTube’s ads. If it was a 5-15 second video ad at the beginning/between videos, plus a banner ad or ads on the side/page, that could be sufferable. But constantly interrupting videos at random points for long ass ads does not mesh well with a short-video platform.

And I also enjoy reminding people whenever I get the chance that the FBI recommends using an adblocker for security/safety reasons: www.ic3.gov/Media/Y2022/PSA221221

Fester,

Thanks for the reply and the good advice.

I didn’t mention that this house has a giant “Trump, a real American hero” banner on the fence facing their neighbor’s house, who is an elderly Latina woman. So I’ll have to overcome my own pre-conceived assumptions about what kind of people they are and how they treat their dogs. I was hoping to resolve it between me and my dog on our own, because it seems like it would be valuable for her to behave well even in difficult situations like that. I’m also concerned they’ll take any discussion about their dogs badly. But I guess if that’s the best option then I won’t know till I try.

I know people like to hate Halo Infinite for a number of reasons, but IMO battle passes are one thing they do fine. MP is free, while the $10 battle passes are optional and you can buy and finish them any time.

I’m still on season 2 while everyone else is on 4 (I think?) I play a few rounds once a week, maybe, but there’s no FOMO because you earn the rewards at whatever pace you want. Once you finish a battle pass you can buy the next one. Or you can buy them out of order or skip any of them.

Apple blames iOS 17 bugs and apps like Instagram for making iPhone 15s run hot (www.theverge.com)

Apple has acknowledged user complaints that iPhone 15 and 15 Pro phones are overheating, reports Forbes, but said that contrary to speculation, it has nothing to do with the phone’s hardware design. Forbes noted an update to Instagram has already rolled out with version 302, released September 27th, to address some of the...

Fester,

The official Reddit app launched an update that did this to my then-few months old iPhone 12 Pro Max back in early 2021. Switching to Apollo immediately fixed the problem.

And now here we are. No problems since then, but TBF I haven’t used any other terrible apps that sloppily force as many ads through my phone as fast as possible.

Apple might actually have a point here.

Fester,

Yeah, one thing Siri seems to be oddly good at is isolating your voice from other noise - even when speaking at a normal volume.

Fester,

For games like this, the touchscreen experience is just inferior to using a controller, and the thought of buying a controller for a phone doesn’t even occur to most users.

That plus the fact that most phone games are so horrible and borderline abusive have really driven home the assumption that phone games are supposed to be cheap and low-quality.

Some decent well-known peripherals and more high-quality games could change that over time, but I think it will be a while before it doesn’t look bizarre to have full-blown console prices for phone games.

And you just know that if it becomes normalized, we’re going to see generic casino and puzzle games jumping on the premium price bandwagon, but still trying to sell gems and shit.

Fester,

It’s for voice actors’ IP rights for AI and non-existent residuals, according to the article. It’s basically about the same issues as the writers/actors strikes.

Though it’s interesting because games have a legitimate use for AI voiceovers. I hope they can negotiate for per-title AI training and residuals, and not just eliminating AI altogether. The potential situational and reactive voiceover seems amazing for games - or even just having an NPC speak your unique name.

IMO the devs could stand to unionize and strike too. God knows gamers all have a backlog and many would hopefully support them for the long haul.

Fester,

I think we had Prime before streaming even started, so that was like a bonus.

But lately we hardly use it. The site is so janky and bloated with trash, I’d rather pay shipping and buy directly from a brand website or a normal retailer. Most have free shipping nowadays anyway.

I just bought an Apple USB wall adapter from Amazon because Best Buy was out of them. I spent like 20 minutes inspecting it and the package and watching videos about how to make sure it isn’t counterfeit. Buying a $20 thing shouldn’t be a stressful ordeal.

Fester,

Local residents had repeatedly contacted Google to have them change their online maps after the bridge collapsed in 2013, the suit claims.

Barriers that were normally placed across the bridge entrance were missing due to vandalism, according to the Charlotte Observer.

The lawsuit is also suing three local companies, arguing they had a duty to maintain the bridge.

That’s a lot of fucking negligence.

Fester,

I recently switched from Voyager to Avelon. Voyager is great and I’m keeping it because it’s always been so reliable, but I just really like Avelon. It has a nice explore tab for finding new communities, and it’s SwiftUI, so it has that clean native iOS look to it. They’re very similar otherwise.

Fester,

Alternatively, get yourself a bulk pack of compressed air cans and solve this and many other problems in life without needing to jam shit into the port. If you use it often enough, invest in a powered air duster.

Fester,

I’m a fan of iPhones, Apple Watches, and iPads, but most of Apple’s accessories are terrible. MagSafe is fine because of how it’s used, and their wall adapters are fine. But Apple brand cables, phone cases, watch bands, etc. are all garbage. I mean, they will literally be in the garbage in under a year. Never fails.

Doesn’t matter how “environmentally friendly” a product is - if you need to replace it frequently, it’s bad for the planet and for your wallet. Just exclusively buy 3rd party cables and accessories that are cheaper and higher quality.

Fester,

Data Vac is my plan once I finish this 12-pack of cans. But at this rate, that’ll take me another 2 years. It was $26 when I bought it, but now I see they’re $45 - that’s half the cost of a Data Vac. So there’s no point in getting disposables at that price.

Fester,

Look at Nomad Goods. I’m using their MagSafe leather case. The buttons are a tad stiff, but other than that, I have no complaints so far. They have non-leather options as well.

It’s holding up much better than the Apple silicon and leather cases I’ve used for this 12 Pro Max till now, and on past phones I’ve used Otterbox and other cases where the silicon tore off within a year.

I’ll be checking Nomad first for any accessories I need from here on. I have a solid metal MagSafe desk stand and a few watch bands from them as well. All are great.

Fester,

Tbh I’d prefer to have the hamberdler watch me struggle and fail to do one pull-up.

Fester,

I’ve heard good things about Native Union cables and chargers, but I haven’t tried them yet personally.

I have a Ventev coiled cable that I keep in my car, and it’s great - solved an issue I had with a previous cable that cracked at the base and had issues with speed/connection. So far so good with Ventev.

Lately, whenever I need an accessory, I always check Nomad Goods first. Their products are incredible. I have a great leather phone case, watch band, and a solid metal desk mount for Apple’s MagSafe puck. I’m about to order their 3-in-1 charger for my wife, and I have high hopes for it. They have a few other products that compare with this Belkin charger, but are probably higher quality, and some cables etc. They’re more of a general accessory store than electronics-focused brand, but I’m hoping their chargers are similar quality to the other Nomad stuff I have so far.

Fester,

I am literally banking on the 20-year IBR forgiveness not being fucked up in the next 15 years. There is no way I’ll pay the loans off at this rate, especially with the interest. The loan terms should be locked in as a worst-case scenario, at least, including forgiveness. These political games are ridiculous.

Now it will be interesting to see if these borrowers are hit with “tax bombs” upon forgiveness. If the forgiven amount is treated as income, like usual on debt forgiveness, it could mean they owe taxes on it come April next year. What are the chances that someone who’s been on an IBR plan has ~$20,000 in cash to pay a tax bill?

Fester,

Considering it takes 230 million years for the sun to orbit the Milky Way one time, my amateur opinion is that what these images represent would take place over the course of a long fucking time.

As far as getting pulverized by the collision - that’s unlikely, as the stars are so far apart within each galaxy, it’s unlikely many, if any stars or planets would directly touch another. But I imagine all sorts of life would evolve and die off within that timeframe, all without the perspective to appreciate what’s happening at the cosmic scale.

This article has some photos of what the sky would look like when the Milky Way and Andromeda collide in 4-6 billion years, if that weren’t long after our atmosphere is boiled off by our own star: en.wikipedia.org/…/Andromeda–Milky_Way_collision

Fester,

I imagine companies will begin consolidating and slowly reducing their workforces over a few decades. Even if AI never gets to do some things as good as humans, it will quickly get to the point where it can do many things good enough with fewer and fewer humans checking its work. If my coworkers started getting laid off and I was left on a team of AI babysitters, I’d feel my days were numbered too. That can affect all sorts of other businesses in a given region, along with crime, education, etc.

But I wonder if it will be so drastic that we’ll see entire cities abandoned by industries, leaving behind unemployed, obsolete workers, sometimes for generations, like what happened with outsourcing and robots.

My hometown was basically built for a few factories, which left. Then it was IBM, which left. Now it’s a university and a few hospitals that are the only real economy there, plus the restaurants that serve them. Place has been depressing AF for a long time. Not an uncommon story by any means, and it’s sure to happen more as the next new way to replace workers comes along. AI just seems like it will affect more industries at once than other disruptors have in the past.

I’m sure those competitors will successfully sue them for <1% of their yearly profit in damages, plus they’ll suffer a single employee’s salary amount in fines.

Fester,

I haven’t played every COD by any means, but my understanding is that you stopped on a good note. Every recent COD I’ve tried feels like an absolute mess - mostly because of the aggressive cash shops that bog down the menus, and immersion-breaking skins/tracers etc. which I personally don’t enjoy seeing at all, like a gorilla and the clown from Saw. There are always bugs and crashes that literally never get fixed. Regardless of all that, they generally feel soulless and sloppy. There aren’t many FPS offerings these days, and Activision clearly knows they don’t need to be competitive. They just push a new one out the door every year, knowing fans love to hate the games and buy them religiously.

I did enjoy MW 2019 for a while, but MW2 did not hit the spot. Vanguard was extremely disappointing. Before those, my last COD was BO2. I’ve been on the fence lately about buying BO3 (2015) for a good zombies experience every time I see it on sale. But I know I would be playing solo because of the veteran stage those zombies players are in, and I have a feeling I’d get screeched at if I don’t know every meta strategy, so I end up passing on it every time.

Personally I’d say skip the Sledgehammer games and be skeptical and cautious about IW games, but give Treyarch’s next BO game a try if it doesn’t turn out to be an obvious bomb.

They’re almost all wildly successful and popular though, so there must be many fans who disagree - YMMV.
