Why don't rabies infected humans act like rabies infected animals

This always puzzled me. Why don’t humans act much more aggressive or crazed like its often depicted with animals. Afaik there’s 2 types of rabies, “dumb” and “furious” so my question is more towards the 2nd type. For example, we never hear of rabies causing a human to accidentally bite another human so why is that?

DrRatso,

What do you mean checked out? The only checking out you can get for a rat bite is wound care and a rabies shot. Sometimes antibiotics depending on the wound (not because rat, but because bite).

Why I need extra kernel modules to be able to run Wayland on nvidia?

If i run X.org i dont need to modify my kernel or its configs, it just works well (well, well for X.org) out of box. With wayland its the other story. I need to enable nvidia-dkms module and much other stuff to should be configured. There is a whole page about enabling hyprland on nvidia....

DrRatso,

This is hyprland specific, wayland runs fine on Gnome and KDE with regular, open and Noveau nvidia drivers

DrRatso,

Bouldering and running are the things I find I want to sink most of my free time into lately. Secondary to that it is general strength and yoga excercises.

I’m a sucker for a good book, recently read the Dune series, it was fantastic.

Then of course music (rap, hip-hop, rock), podcasts (too many to list or keep up with properly, really).

Video games used to be big, but these days nothing really tickles my pickle. I used to be mostly into PvP (first few seasons of league, speedrunners, MW2, Battlerite, Omega Strikers) but these days it is rare to find good ones, single-player stuff rarely catches my attention enough to sink hours in. Usually nothing I try these days lasts more than 2-3 times playing it.

DrRatso,

Yes, the barrier for entry is so low. You can even run barefoot if you are so inclined (I do experiment with this). Granted climbing can become expensive-ish if you want to do regular climbing. But bouldering is very cheap to get into.

Plus there is something so primal about running and climbing. Like these are the things we are supposed to be good at, it is how we are meant to move in some sense. It feels so empowering to know you can run for X time/distance or that you can climb a wall this hard…

DrRatso,

Apple watch now, but I have plans of picking up a hybrid soon. Im looking at Garmins vivomove or instinct crossover.

DrRatso,

So just don’t upgrade the kernel

DrRatso,

This is one I thoroughly do not understand, maybe because I have not tried it, but cooking rice is already so easy, why would i need a separare appliance for it?

DrRatso,

I guess, overcooking is a measurement problem anyway tho.

DrRatso,

Someone not posting on X is surely not enough to qualify as tech news. Come on…

DrRatso,

Fair enough, I still find it hard to see how it fits this comm, but it is a bit better in that context.

DrRatso,

Thanks, the apology means a lot, truly.

DrRatso,

This site has the most infuriating privacy popup I have ever seen, theres a tab for 1400 partner consents. Like what?

DrRatso,

I actually opened it in safari just to see, but it did not seem like it managed to, at least on iOS.

DrRatso,

Dental fillings are fine in an MRI, so are all manner of implants.

DrRatso,

You can get a variant of it by eating meat of the afflicted cow.

DrRatso,

Ih, thats the same author as glaze? If so, I have heavy doubt about this one. Glaze made everything look like shit, and even then it did not really work, not to mention anyone who would actually use an artwork for training could remove glaze easily using A1111.

DrRatso,

QTips cause wax plugs, if you use them gently to clean just the outer bit of the ear canal, it is kind of okay, but really you shouldnt. The ear canal is cone shaped so as you insert the Qtip you inevitably push some wax down.

Furthermore the ear canal is self cleaning.

DrRatso,

You might not notice them, but id say theres a good chance you have wax plugs built up in your ears from using QTips (and inear headphones if you use them).

DrRatso,

I never really liked the in-ear feel, I also dislike bluetooth, so my go to for moving is Koss PortaPro, these are very open so no real isolation, however. For bluetooth the staple overear is WM1000xm4, though I have no experience.

DrRatso,

There are a variety of ways in which our bodies attune to constant stimulus, in the case of neural stimulus, there are a variety of mechcanisms with the common goal of reducing activation of the neural pathway. You could have less receptors, more breakdown of the stimulating compound, increased cell activation treshold or downstream changes that similarly just reduce the ability for the signal to cause effects further along the chain.

Receptor or physical clogging generally (afaik) does not happen with substances we encounter normally, however it is a common tactic in pharmacology, where we might use a drug that binds to a receptor without effect and prevents the active compound from binding.

Or in the case of Succinylcholine, it binds, causes the normal action, but then prevents the normal molecule from binding and causing the action again - this is used to achieve rapid muscle paralysis and is both a poison as well as a common drug used for anesthesia.

DrRatso,

Next up was the American Veterinary Medical Association, a group that represents nearly 90,000 bona fide vets and has been around since the days of the Civil War. When asked about whisker fatigue, the association’s president, Tom Meyer, noted that “while a cat’s whiskers are very sensitive, there is currently no evidence showing that whiskers rubbing against food bowls causes cats stress or discomfort.”

DrRatso,

There are so many good Emergency Medicine blogs out there, I use Feedly to neatly aggregate them on my phone and read when I get downtime at work.

DrRatso,

Oh gosh, top 3?

ALiEM has brilliant and varied content, their tricks of the trade section has cool pearls

Dr. Smith’s ECG blog because I love me a cool ECG, also great to have tricky ECGs in your face regularly, makes me feel like I am less likely to miss one in the wild.

EMDocs for just great catchup content.

Extra super special mention goes out to:

Emergency Mind Podcast - not a blog, but really positive content, I always love to listen to the new ep on my commute.

What's an alternative to Spotify that doesn't play you the same fucking songs over and over?

I am in an intense love-hate relationship with Spotify. It makes good mixes for me, I have found a lot of great bands that way. BUT IT KEEPS REGURGITATING THE SAME SONGS IN THERE. I know about Song Radios and Artist Radios, so please don’t recommend those. Smart Shuttle doesn’t cut it, either....

DrRatso,

One of the main reasons I stuck with YouTube Music is that I find the algorhitms superior to spotify. Maybe this is placebo, but I think between the 7 mixes + discovery + artist / song radio I always have something that does not feel the same, and I feel like any intentionally searched listening updates the mixes fairly quickly.

DrRatso,

This might be a function of low usage time, the shifts were definitely more pronounced in the beginning, now when I listen to new stuff it only introduces the changes in the appropriate mixes (i.e my mix 1-3 is various hiphop (very well segregated into different styles i must add), 4,5 is indie/rock etc) and the amount is a function of how much of said new stuff i listen. On occasion i will use votes and the dislikes especially affect playlists quickly.

I know the youtube behaviour you refer to and it honestly really makes me hate watching youtube, some days I will have a bad mood and start spamming not interested for a few rows and my feed is good again.

But with YTM it seems to be really nice, whereas with spotify, as OP, I found it quite stale.

DrRatso,

Im a disgusting premium user, but I might check out newpipe some day.

DrRatso,

Hopefully not arbitrary stat padding. The +2 to rolls made playing tanks incredibly frustrating, especially early on.

DrRatso,

I mean…

Most people will just do one specialised set of tasks for their whole lives. And reproduction definitely has strong physiological drives, there is a reason for phrases such as “thinking with his dick”.

An ant society is in fact very profound in many ways, they are eusocial, which means that any single individual truly works for the good of everyone and is willing to give up their lives without hesitation to protect the colony. Such level of cooperation is probably unfathomable in humans.

DrRatso,

Soggy beats crunchy any day, it just tastes better + the milk gets flavoured.

Are there any popular and well-maintained dotfiles for Arch Linux that come with a solid installation process?

After recently installing a new system, I had a rude awakening when I realized I’d been tinkering with broken dotfiles for over a year. It’s time to simplify things. I’m considering adopting popular dotfiles with established installation processes and leaving my existing setup behind, transferring essential configurations...

DrRatso,

Hyprdots is great if you are into Tiling WMs, I loved it but ultimately realised that tiling WM is not for me.

DrRatso,

Don’t like them, they are annoying to deal with - CLI naming is odd, files are stored unintuitively and if your whole system is not on flatpak, chances are the sizes are going to be absurd. One of the main reasons I wen’t with Arch is Pacman + AUR, never have to install a flatpak, because the package management is so good.

DrRatso,

They had a month to level to 60 and gear up, most normal people aren’t into wasting a month to enter a tournament with practically no odds of getting anything. If you die in the tournament your character is done, so naturally the contestants are largely going to be people with some confidence and time to spare.

DrRatso,

That is a lot of resentment about someone making money off a hobby. Do you cry about people making money in chess tournaments too?

DrRatso, (edited )

There were hardly people here who are James LeBron level when it comes to WoW, a lot of them are in fact closer to hobbyists and the tournament itself was not even close to NBA level. Both chess and basketball have hobby level tournaments that have prize money on the line.

DrRatso,

The point is to make adblocking so tedious that only fairly tech literate people would do it. That cousin whose pc you set up and installed uBO on? They won’t figure out how to update the filters, they will just whitelist (or realistically just turn off uBO) or premium.

Basically nobody will actually abandon YT over this and those who do will be so low in numbers it is ~0 to YT.

DrRatso,

Judging by the coverage of Starfield, Bethesda should not be allowed to do ‘hands-off’ development. They release a broken buggy and incomplete mess, then let the modding community finish it for free. I mean maybe from a business perspective that was a good move, can afford to drop some devs and reduce dev time I guess.

But even though Starfield roughly combines the genres I am most interested in, there is no way I am buying it until (if) it goes on a sale for around 10 bucks.

DrRatso,

I don’t sail the high seas much these says, I did when I was a broke college student unable to afford full priced titles. Now my time is limited, my funds less so, so I rather just give the little spare time and money to projects I actually can get behind. Also I don’t think I want to fuck around with running pirated versions in linux, might be a PITA.

Observing Starfields failures have rekindled my interest in Elite:Dangerous and No Mans Sky.

DrRatso,

Top six hours for all, new for subscribed and communities.

DrRatso,

Now mind you, everything I write might be wrong, I am out of my depth here.

But as I understand a BTRFS snapshot is simply a (subvolume in which you will find) copy of the table that points to the actual files or, rather, blocks on your drive. As long as a table exists that points to a block, this block will persist.

The nature of BTRFS is Copy-on-Write so in your active snapshot, when you modify a file / block, a copy of it is created with the new version, referencing this new block on the filesystem table.

This is why BTRFS snapshots are fast and take little space by themselves, you do not need to actually copy all the data at the moment of creating the backup, rather when the data is modified and only that data.

DrRatso,

Fair point, I have probably experienced this as I had weird input issues on native linux discord, I switched to WebCord, which solved the issue. before I pinpointed the issue, so I had no clue it is specific to nvidia + wayland.

And yes, I specifically mentioned I use my PC recreationally to point out that my usecases are not too specific, so maybe I do not see the issues because of that.

DrRatso,

Yea, I had no clue that it is an Nvidia + Wayland issue, I had something similar in discord, i switched to webcord before pinpointing the issue and it solved it. More of a nuisance than a real problem in my case though.

DrRatso,

Suspend works fine for me on Wayland/Gnome, firefox only gets closed when I reboot. I use nvidia-open though, i remember before I had to take extra steps to enable proper nvidia suspend behaviour, or I had similarproblems(there was a specific package and some configs to change).

Now mind you this is an nvidia not nvidia - wayland issue afaik.

Here is the overview on archwiki

DrRatso,

Just replied to another comment about suspend issues with nvidia.

Have you tried doing something like this arch wiki entry

DrRatso,

Oh I see, I missed that fact, I thought you were talking about proton in general.

The only time I had problems with wayland - proton (I think) was with stanley parable, which I outlined somewhere in this thread (I am a little lost honestly, have gotten a ton of replies).

But in either of our cases I doubt the problem was nvidia - wayland, rather just wayland.

DrRatso, (edited )

I mean, i used nvidia with KDE and nvidia-dkms with hyprland, no difference.

E: The question is about nvidia cards playing with wayland anyway. Also afaik nvidia-open is not the same driver as noveau.

I mentioned the distro to point out I am not using a driver package that is 6 months old.

we could tell just from the sense…

Calm down buddy, no need to project your insecurities all over the place, everyone can tell you are a raging dick anyway.

E2: Brb, gonna check comments…

A device that allows me to kill any billionaire, world leader, or politician remotely, anywhere in the world, without them being able to stop me.

Oh, I see, you are just unhinged.

E3: I though about it a second more and I blocked you. Partly because I did not want to engage with your dumb ass, but mostly since I figured it would piss you off.

DrRatso,

Interesting, but I doubt this was an nvidia + wayland problem, or if it was, it had been since fixed. My first DE was KDE and I used the regular nvidia driver with it, for sure did not notice anything wrong with right click menus.

DrRatso,

I mean, it might be a wayland issue, sure. And I am not saying wayland as a whole is perfect, I am just saying I don’t feel I generally have experienced nvidia + wayland problems as opposed to just wayland problems.

Although I did concede that I did have an electron issue which turns out was an NV + W issue and I just didn’t know.

I use FF and had no issues on either KDE, Hypr or GNOME, as well as used KDE around 2 months ago and didn’t notice any right click problems, so I imagine whatever it was got fixed since you tried it.

DrRatso,

I never used it after wotlk as I quit wow after and when I came back in BfA i was fine with WASD, i just relied on shift and control layers more.

I never liked it fully because on my keyboards E is offset from SDF noticably more than W from ASD.
