CubitOom,

The best thing about arch is the wiki.

wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA

That said, on a laptop, you will likely need prime, optimus, or bumblebee depending on your CPU/GPU.

CubitOom,

Why is the land in dispute? Before oil was found, who owned it?

Players who don't like survival games as a genre: Which survival games are your personal exceptions, which ones have you enjoyed nonetheless and why?

Personally, I really don’t like most of these games due to the tedium and frustration that comes with hunger/thirst mechanics. Most of the exceptions that I do actually like either make up for it through something else that elevates the experience enough - or they either don’t have these mechanics or allow for players to...

CubitOom,

Minecraft

CubitOom,

I like to build a dirt structure with an open block window pointing to the sun so I know when it’s safe to come out. Assuming I can’t find sheep.

Making a tree house is nice too.

CubitOom,

Also, with gitea the table of contents for org files are properly rendered in HTML as it should be. As someone that uses org-mode this is a reason to avoid gitlab.

But for most people I’d say the less resources that gitea requires means you save on compute and ultimately is cheaper to host.

I’ve been running my own gitea server on kubernetes and with istio for over 3 years with no issues.

CubitOom, (edited )

If you like xfce, I think that kde is more similar to it than gnome. So I would recommend giving kde a try too.

An easy way to test out both is to just use a live image booted from a USB. You could always install them to your everyday PC but then you have a lot more packages installed and I personally would rather keep my installed packages to a minimum. If you can’t do a live cd because your os doesn’t provide one then I would try a vm or a different drive that you can boot into.

CubitOom,

Most of the time, unless it’s a film about love or sex, romance is just shoehorned in there for no reason. I think the only genre of film that should be allowed to do that is comedy. Otherwise it seems like lazy story telling, especially in action movies.

If we want porn, we have the Internet in our hands. So random sex scenes make no sense.

Why would we want barely formed romance sub plots?

Film should be used as a tool to gain insight into these experiences, of which some of the more profound might be seduction, companionship, and loss.

CubitOom,

I guess the trakt API could be used for this…but their database won’t have YouTube videos in it.

CubitOom,

On my phone, I’ve been using newpipe for a few years with little complaints. I can import my Google account subscriptions to it but I can’t comment or rate.

On my home theater PC I have been watching YouTube via Kodi with a Google API for over 6 years. It works excellent and there is no ads. Although Google may at any time revoke access to the API or charge me a fee to use it. It is kinda technical to set up and requires Kodi which is a rather large package with a lot of python dependencies. So if you only want to watch YouTube and don’t want to set up a Google API or read a doc then it might not be for you.

Others comments here mentioned freetube which looks really promising and I might try it on my laptop.

CubitOom,

After I figured out this song was really a subliminal ad for Yoo-hoo™, it doesn’t hit the same.

CubitOom,

PSA: If a cat drinks water constantly, it might indicate kidney problems (which are fairly common in cats).

Make sure to check if your cat is hydrated, www.youtube.com/watch?v=KducLdeqGsM

CubitOom,

I guess my espresso absinthe martini is the one that did psychedelics when they studied abroad.

CubitOom,

Place a couple ice cubes in the glass first. Then,

  • 15 g absinthe, stir till opaque
  • 20 g cocchi Americano
  • 10 g grand Marnier
  • 5 g hazelnut syrup
  • double shot of espresso (mine is dialed in at 36 grams)

Admittedly, it’s a bit light on the absinthe.

I also recommend using a German/Austrian absinthe if possible.

I call it “the early bird gets the wormword” but I’m not too inlove with the name.

CubitOom,

Yeah, it’s all in grams.

It’s just a very small increment so it’s more useful than ounces for me (maybe this goes back into the whole study abroad thing, although I never did that).

And even though it’s all liquid, I find it a lot easier to measure by weight than using a measuring cup or jigger.

Especially if making fresh espresso, I’m going to dial in my shot by weight anyway so I don’t make bitter espresso. So I’ll have a cheap scale that is accurate within 0.01 grams at the ready.

CubitOom,

No thanks, I used to use boost for reddit and I loved it.

But now on lemmy, there are FOSS apps that are just as good I’d rather donate to.

CubitOom,

VLC almost did it for me until I found XBMC (now named Kodi). Which wasn’t as stable as VLC but had better features and was multiplatform too so from there I decided to give Linux a try after windows borked my pc since i only wanted xbmc hooked up to a tv.

CubitOom,

Because they can say they will, possibly sell slightly more than they predicted. And then in 2 years say that they cannot support it anymore anyway.

Alternative ways to run Plex?

Context; So… Just bought a brand new TV and life is good, but I should have done more research before buying it. I primarily want to use PLEX for watching media on the TV. However, due to “smart TV’s” not being smart and being rather slow because most current TV operating systems are either bloated or just riddled with...

CubitOom,

I will always recommend buying or building a small home theater PC (htpc). Then you get a wireless keyboard with a connected track pad and you are set.

If you are more tech savvy, you can save money and recycle by simply installing Linux on an old laptop/pc that you are not using and plugging it into your monitor.

CubitOom,

Jellyfin is great

Unpacking Amazon's stealthy mass layoff strategy in Seattle (www.seattletimes.com)

Amazon, frequently under the microscope for its pioneering but often criticized management techniques, now requires its employees to commit to office work at least three days a week. This new policy will necessitate some employees to uproot their lives and move to larger hubs closer to main offices....

CubitOom,

Layoffs at a company like Amazon – which has a relatively low cash salary ceiling – is more of a way to steal employee pay, in the way of keeping unvested stocks that were part of a compensation package.

I never liked stocks as part of compensation packages purely from the point you don’t even know if you will actually vest and receive that stock because who knows what will happn in 3-5 years. Let alone what the stock price will be by then.

CubitOom,

Armored Core 6 and Minecraft.

Both on Linux, Armored Core 6 works flawlessly with proton. But Minecraft needed some more work.

I just finished modding Minecraft java edition on Linux with fabric to use my Nvidia card appropriately and it is running the smoothest it ever has at 60 fps, 128 bit resource packs and very high settings on my shader. Fabric is so much better than optifine in terms of performance, just wish it was a bit easier to install.

CubitOom,

And here is my exported settings for r5.0.

If using the same version, save as a file named ComplementaryUnbound_r5.0.zip.txt

And paste in the following to import but I would suggest you play around with it.

CubitOom,

Emacs gang here, coughing in org-mode.

CubitOom,

Wait till you guys use cert-manager on a kubernetes cluster

CubitOom,

No issues on my self hosted kubernetes vanilla server

CubitOom,

This is a great little field guide for mushroom foraging.

There are better ones, some better suited to my region. But the size of this one makes it easy to take with you while hiking.

CubitOom,

What’s the soil life like.

Any Insects, mycelium, or other germinations?

CubitOom,

I expect it to be there. But it is admittedly hard to see.

But as someone just learning about these things (specifically from the work of Charles Dowding) I find it very exciting. And I would like to see if that could be captured in your photos as well.

CubitOom,

Anyone know if fairphone will work on Google Fi?

CubitOom,

I haven’t tried to do this. But maybe Kodi? Jellyfin might also work.

CubitOom,

If you like obsidian but want a FOSS alternative, you might want to try out emacs org-mode and org-roam.

Here is an example video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyhPmypHDEw

CubitOom,

I haven’t used vim in a while, so not sure. But you can use vim key bindings in emacs with evil-mode.

Org-mode can also be exported into markdown.

Markdown is cool since it’s used in a lot of places. But org-mode has so many more features and can be a drop in replacement in most cases.

CubitOom,

One of the best qualities of Arch and other Arch based distros, the ability to use the archwiki.

It can be helpful when using other distros too but on Arch it’s exactly the docs your supposed to use.

wiki.archlinux.org/title/Anbox

From that wiki it says: Note: As of February 2023, Anbox is no longer actively developed. The developer recommended Waydroid as an alternative.

CubitOom,

Honestly. It’s about more than money.

If your boss says you must return to the office, after 3 years of WFH. At best, it shows that they do not value or respect you, and are just making an arbitrary decision in a bid to sell more stocks.

At worst, there might be some insidious reason to make employees physically available. Maybe they are getting a kickback somehow, or selling data that they can only get when you are there, or maybe they are just horny and want to seduce you sexually.

A remote worker is often happier, more productive, and cost less to employ even if they are paid the same as an on-site worker. Offices do not have to provide parking, seating, HVAC, power, wifi, and will even have less physical security vectors.

If some people prefer to go into an office, then it should be optional. Not a hybrid model where they force you to come a certain number of days a week.

At the end of the day unless you are on some kind of probation or evaluation period WFH should be the default when ever possible.

CubitOom,

Grave of the Fireflies…but make sure to watch My Neighbor Totoro right after as intended

CubitOom,

There is a learning curve, but emacs org-mode sounds exactly like what you want.

With org-mode you can have your docs and your code in the same place or use your docs to create and link to different files.

You can even run your code inside your docs and have it execute on a networked computer without ever leaving your doc.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=34zODp_lhqg

And with org-roam, you can keep the same functionality you are used to with obsidian.

Emacs is a bit of a rabbit hole however. So if you want to keep things simple you could just use git.

Git has its own learning curve but it’s pretty much a requirement everywhere code is developed and released professionally so it’s a good idea to have some experience with it.

I’d suggest having different repos for your different projects, and either one single readme.md file in each repo for all your docs or using the wiki feature that is built into most free git web UIs like GitHub and gitlab.

Once on git, it’s trivial to link to specific files or even individual lines in your repo.

CubitOom,

Lol, this is exactly what happened to me

CubitOom, (edited )

Arch, NixOS and openSUSE Tumbleweed are very supported.

Source: wiki.hyprland.org/Getting-Started/Installation/

I would recommend an Arch based distro if you want to keep it simple. That will give you access to the AUR and compatibility with the arch wiki.

PS: Arch can be very stable, especially if you use an LTS kernel and don’t restart during updates.

CubitOom,

Dang, I was gonna post this vid.

CubitOom,

I’d say go to a local thrift store, if they got an automatic drip machine in working condition for a good price, pick that up.

If you’re just getting into something it’s always a good idea to start cheap and figure things out as you go

CubitOom,
