Gotcha, I’m using the setting to have the call take up the whole screen so I wasn’t aware of some of these issues

Cris_Color,
@Cris_Color@lemmy.world avatar

Was that a feature of simple dialer? There’s a separate call blocking app but I haven’t played with it and tried to make it work, not sure if it might be useful to you. You might have to use it as your phone app

Maps.me used to be open source, I believe the Foss continuation of the project is Organic Maps. Thats not necessarily relevant to OPs question, but it’s worth knowing about :)

Have good one!

Is the alternative routes being a slightly desaturated blue also a part of this color change, or is that just some garbage they’re a/b testing? Cause thats like a ui/ux sin.

I’m operating a fucking car, I need to be able to see where my turn is and discriminate between the path I’m on, and the path I could choose instead you assholes

Cris_Color,
@Cris_Color@lemmy.world avatar

Even if you aren’t necessarily looking for a Foss/private stuff I think folks should know not to use evernote by now. It’s been an ever-worsening garbage heap for a long time. When I was in highschool I used it a LOT for a while, and pretty quickly shitty changes started to become commonplace, and it’s been exclusively downhill from there.

If you’re still using it, its worth looking through the huge number of competitors for something else; you have no shortage of alternative options at this point

@askandroid

Anyone have thoughts on iodeOS in this conversation? Thats what I was last considering. It’d be interesting if folks shared their thought on the pros & cons of the options they’re familiar with

[Request] Can you make it so we can chose what browser links open to, or create an internal browser option?

I don’t like using Chrome anymore, but any link I open goes to Chrome. Way more importantly, any YouTube video opens to the YouTube app, which is a huge problem imo. I end up not viewing 90% of the videos posted on lemmy, because I don’t want my YouTube feed to be screwed up....

Cris_Color,
@Cris_Color@lemmy.world avatar

People already have some good suggestions here, but I wanted to mention that linksheet on f-droid may be helpful to some of the folks here. You set it as your default browser and it let’s you choose where you want links to open with more flexibility and options than you usually get

On one hand I agree schadenfreude is a dangerous thing that one should be careful about how they engage in

On the other hand he wields a LOT of power over our discussions as a society because he owns a successful platform. If twitter fails it takes away some of his power to be a shithead and to shape our discussions in a way that sucks (ie, inviting everyone to be bigots and to be cruel to their fellow humans on a scale that’s frankly kinda horrifying)

Cris_Color,
@Cris_Color@lemmy.world avatar

Despite the down voters I appreciate you sharing the context about USA law around ADAS. Not a fan of this, but understanding how we got to a place where cars have this kind of privacy violation baked in is helpful

Cris_Color,
@Cris_Color@lemmy.world avatar

You’re very welcome ❤️ I think understanding why things are the way they are is important if we want any agency over it, I always appreciate folks who share their material knowledge of a subject

Hope you have a good one man, take care :)

Cris_Color,
@Cris_Color@lemmy.world avatar

Probably, but not everyone is using home assistant…? I get that open source and self hosting is cool and all, but like news about things that aren’t open source/self hosted is still relevant news to a lot of folks

Cris_Color,
@Cris_Color@lemmy.world avatar

Ahhh, okay. And you’re all good, it just feels like open source folks here sometimes forget this can be a bit of an echo chamber and that they shouldn’t ostracize folks who aren’t exclusively using FOSS stuff (I say, as a big open source nerd)

I misunderstood the point you were trying to get across. Hope you have a good one :)

Seems weird that the preview image for an article about smart phones in India would be an incredibly generic white man with a laptop. You can’t even see his phone 😅

Breath Taker - A revised version of the story I posted here earlier, which incorporates the Fediverse in a Solarpunk world, in which Plant-, Fungi-, Fish-People and Humans try to make a living (fungiverse.wordpress.com)

The idea is to have a piece of fiction that you can give a person to experience the Fediverse while also being moderately entertained in the process. So: would you give this story to a person that doesn’t know anything about the Fediverse? I would love to hear your opinions. I will try to incorporate feedback into the story...

Cris_Color,
@Cris_Color@lemmy.world avatar

Its extremely difficult to tell what this post title is about…

What the hell is fungi Taylor swift…?

Cris_Color,
@Cris_Color@lemmy.world avatar

Because they can move fast enough to not be in the way for people behind them, since they are among the fastest vehicles on our roads. Bikes are considerably slower, which makes it more of a nuisance for those they’re sharing the road with if they can’t easily be passed.

Bike lanes are a good thing, and being courteous is a good thing- that goes both for passing when safe and being respectful of bike riders when you’re driving a car, and also for allowing cars to pass where possible when you’re moving significantly slower than the average traffic speed on a bicycle. It doesn’t have to be adversarial.

Cris_Color,
@Cris_Color@lemmy.world avatar

Being courteous does solve that…? First off, trains don’t share the road, they follow tracks, so thats somewhat of a convoluted comparison. But more importantly, you stop at train crossings so the train can go first…? Is your argument that that’s inefficient? Everything is inefficient. Any solution to a really complicated problem like how multiple forms of transportation co-exist is going to have inefficiencies

Also, no idea where you got the idea that I would be opposed to building more rail and less cars? Cars should increasingly be de-prioritzed in favor of bikes, ebikes, and public transit, but bike riders should be courteous of those who are driving and vice versa, and cars should continue to stop at train tracks to allow trains to go by. Where on earth did you get the idea that my logic of “be considerate of those who are using a different means of transportation” means cars should go away or that cars shouldn’t go away? Also we definitely should be building rail, if we’re gonna deprioritze cars we need public transportation to help fill that gap for people who aren’t in a position to commute or travel by bike/ebike, but all of our infrastructure is currently built around cars, and even in a distant future there will be a need for cars in addition to bikes and trains, we just have way too many of them

I don’t mean to come across as rude, but your response to my comment honestly does really confuse me.

Be respectful of those you share the road with. That means driving in a way that’s safe for cyclists. That means letting cars go by (when safe to do so) when you’re cycling since they travel much faster than you. And definitely stop at train tracks so that trains can go by.

Cris_Color,
@Cris_Color@lemmy.world avatar

Lmao, thats an incredible image. I have no interest in reading the article, and I choose to believe the author is just very upset at lenovo’s fashion crimes vaguely associated with tablet use

What sci-fi stories bring out a strong emphasis on family (self made or born into) to you? (lemmy.world)

For me I would say “The Expanse” is a huge one. If there was ever a self made family, the crew of the Rocinante is one of the best. The amount of time they spend together and how they congeal into life long partners and friends in the face of some truly awful events is really inspiring to me.

Cris_Color,

Firefly and cowboy bebop both kinda come to mind. Not amazing examples, but seemed worth mentioning

Joe Biden Wants US Government Algorithms Tested for Potential Harm Against Citizens (www.wired.com)

Cris_Color,

I mean that broadly seems like a good thing. Execution is important, but on paper this seems like the kind of forward thinking policy we need

In fairness, the money he gets from being a scumbag with fandom probably can’t be used to fund Wikipedia unless he wants to donate the money he’s making from his business to run his nonprofit. It’s not surprising he wouldn’t do that (even if thats the way the world ought to work) and I don’t presently have reason to believe he personally gets anything out of the donations that are given to keep Wikipedia running

The video posted is actually all about what the competition is like :) its hard to compete with a huge company like wikia/fandom, but folks are making it work anyway, and that’s pretty cool. I really enjoyed the video

How do you keep backtrack in youtube/twitch?

I’m not officially diagnosed but I’m having a lot of trouble, being focused ans memorize things. Have you any methods, tools to help you backtracking what content content you’re watching or willing to in these platforms? Sometimes my browser remember the timestamp of a video, Sometimes it’s doesn’t.

Cris_Color,
@Cris_Color@lemmy.world avatar

What specifically are you hoping to remember. Just how far you were through the content? Which pieces of content you wanted to watch? Something else? All of the above?

I usually don’t have problems with platforms forgetting how far through a piece of content I am, but for remembering stuff I’m interested in, I usually use “watch later” playlists to save stuff I wanna watch, at least on YouTube

For shows I use JustWatch, which shows which shows/movies are available on what platforms. For books there’s goodreads and I think also a Foss/fediverse alternative

You may also wanna try grayjay which let’s you watch, and also save content from various video/streaming platforms (including yt and twitch) to a playlist for later viewing. Not sure if there’s a website or just an app, its pretty new

Which alternate term for the Fediverse do you like best: Wood Wide Web, Fungal/Fungi Web or Fungiverse?

Wood Wide Web: Already a term in biology. “Research has shown that beneath every forest and wood there is a complex underground web of roots, fungi and bacteria helping to connect trees and plants to one another. This subterranean social network, nearly 500 million years old, has become known as the “wood wide web”.”...

Cris_Color,
@Cris_Color@lemmy.world avatar

Wait, why are we coming up with a different way to refer to the fediverse? That seems like it would really needlessly muddy and complicate talking about something most people already don’t understand… What’s the benefit to creating an additional name?

Cris_Color, (edited )
@Cris_Color@lemmy.world avatar

Thats a different neo launcher. The one he’s talking about isn’t available on the google play store.

Lemme find you an f-droid link

Edit: here you go apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid/index/…/com.saggitt.omega

Its on izzydroid. You’ll want to use an f-droid client to download it and keep it updated. There are a bunch, the official one is an easy place to start, but I really like droid-ify. There’s also neo store which is developed by the same person/people who make neo launcher, but personally I find neo launcher pretty clunky

Building a Hypercube and looking for advice

Howdy y’all, much like the title says, I’m looking to build a Hypercube. I have what was once upon a time an Ender 3 V1 that I’ve rebuilt with an Ender Extender kit. I’m not happy with the aggressive ghosting I get from the 400x400 bed so I wanted to cannibalize the electronics and build the frame from scratch. I was...

Cris_Color,
@Cris_Color@lemmy.world avatar

You wanna be mindful to get the plane that the hot end moves around on parallel with the bed as best as possible. Software leveling and adjustment are nice, but starting with something very parallel is a whole lot better.

And if you have the option I’d consider using precision rails instead of steel rods for movement in the x/y axis, you can get cheap ones from like Ali express but they’ll be better for print precision.

With the hypercube we built at my last job, we were building a second printer but with rails instead of rods and my boss said he was way happier with the result, and we spent a while re-leveling the extruded aluminum pieces that our rails (that the hot end moved along) were mounted to, and that also helped.

Regardless, its better not to worry too much and just get started. I’m really bad about trying to perfect things or get everything just right right off the bat when I’d be better served by just starting and then figuring things out from there

Cris_Color,
@Cris_Color@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, I’m on board with your take. Its really expensive and frankly doesn’t add a ton of value for me. I get the appeal in things like better HDR or night photography, since those make pictures actually match how things look to the eyes, but I really don’t care to pay extra for like 4k pictures and crazy software bokeh effects. I just wanna be able to take a picture of the occasional cool bug I see, or a nice memory with a friend

Cris_Color,
@Cris_Color@lemmy.world avatar

In fairness, being an entertainer who makes technical knowledge more accessible is a great thing that should be applauded; there is value in being a communicator rather than an expert… Until you mislead people and fail to maintain a certain level of integrity/credibility. I’m not huge on the idea that we should look down on people for not being the very most technical of experts, but I DO feel we need to hold people accountable when they prioritize profit over integrity

Cris_Color,
@Cris_Color@lemmy.world avatar

There are better things to do with your time than to go around telling people that you know better than them whether their own experience is valid.

Also Asexual means you don’t experience sexual attraction.

“A-sexual”: “A” meaning without, “sexual” meaning sexuality. As in you don’t have the experience of looking at someone and wanting to have sex with them. It has nothing to do with gender or gender identity.
