Brokkr, to askscience in How could SI units be derived from scratch without the use of modern technology?

Well pretty much everyone likes defining a day based on the position of the sun in the sky. While sun rise and sunset might change over the course of the year, nearly everyone agrees that noon is when the sun is the highest in the sky (ignoring day light savings and time zone effects). Turns out people don’t like it when noon occurs in the middle of the night (which would happen if we changes it to any other length of time).

Likewise, nearly everyone has agreed for millenia that a year is defined by earth’s position within its orbit. We know that based on where the stars are at night. Again, people didn’t like having snow during July (which actually happened because the calendar was so far off).

These are not definitions that we can change or have any control over. Additionally, the length of a year (to get earth back to the same spot in its orbit) divided by the length of a day (the time between the sun reaching its apex one day and the next) is not an integer and there’s nothing that says it has to be.

We can’t change it, so if thats important to you, you’ll have to find another planet to live on.

There is a calendar that proposes to have 13 months, each with 28 days. That gives you 364 days. Day 365 is new years day and is not part of any month. There are still leap years because as stated, the Earth goes around the sun in 365.24… days. To not need leap years we’d need that to be a whole number.

Doesn’t yelp let businesses erase poor reviews for a fee? Is the only difference here that yelp isn’t getting paid?

Brokkr, to games in Friday Facts #375 - Quality | Factorio

I’m making some assumptions, but I think as you increase the general quality level of your production lines that it becomes easier (not easy), to get the higher quality items. Maybe I missed it, but I don’t think they stated what a higher quality intermediate product does (like a higher quality iron plate). My assumption is that anything produced with it has a boost to it’s quality.

If this is true, then by thoughtfully focusing on where quality is being produced and how high quality items are being used that it should be possible to get reasonable chances at “epic” items.

My point about scaling was that once you have a large supply of epic mining drills, assemblers, labs, etc that it will be possible to achieve the same SPM with fewer machines operating, and therefore could build a higher SPM factory to achieve the same UPS as without quality. You’re probably right that it will take awhile to get sufficient number of epic items to do this, but playtime for this game have never been small numbers.

I think it adds another thing to do as you progress to the end game and finish the tech tree. The infinite research was good, but this will allow people to scale their megabases even further before the UPS drop chokes it.

*in the UK.

I like his weekly videos, but this one is missing a fairly important qualifier in the title. Still informative and interesting.

Brokkr, to android in This is a Crypto Phone. Don’t Buy It. - MKBHD

This is by far the most reasonable and mature conversation I’ve ever had on the internet. I wasn’t even advocating for one side or the other, was honestly just trying to learn more. Thank you for being a good person.

Brokkr, to android in This is a Crypto Phone. Don’t Buy It. - MKBHD

I agree with you about not supporting anyone who supports rogan, but it looks like he was last on the show in 2018. Is that correct?

I know rogan started ok and then went stupid at some point. Was MKBHD’s appearance before or after rogan shit the bed?

Brokkr, to news in Wisconsin Supreme Court chief justice accuses liberal majority of staging a 'coup'

I’m not the person as you replied to, but I hope to introduce some additional information which might answer your question in case it was genuine.

The OP of this comment tree advocated for originalism (“based on their original intent”) which up until about 20 years ago was generally considered incompatible with the responsibilities of a Judge. Typically, precedent is supposed to matter more than the laws original intent. Conservatives have been appointing originalists to the bench for a while now and it is leading to decisions like overturning Roe V. Wade. I can’t do a good job explaining it in more detail, but you can search for “stare decisis vs originalism” to find more information. The results may be political so use your own intellectual filter.

It’s possible that the OP didn’t know that this is an originalists argument, but that’s what the words currently state.

Brokkr, to technology in Liability for AI damages?

As of yet, AIs are not taking independent actions (arguably unlike the cars). So for now, I think the person using the information would be liable, just like if they copied and pasted information from a site. The individual is responsible for the actions they take, although they may not have the necessary intent to commit certain crimes.

Regarding the cars, it could be argued that the drivers are responsible regardless of the features of the car. But it could also be argued that the features malfunctioned, preventing the driver from safely operating the vehicle. The manufacturer will likely argue thst the driver was operating the car incorrectly, and they will spend millions manufacturing this evidence.

They address that at then end of the post. After all, the same developer is working on both projects.

Basic point is thwt they are targeting different audiences, but there will also be engine improvements. I’m hope that means SE just gets better because of these changes.

Brokkr, to technology in AI bots are so good at mimicking the human brain and vision that CAPTCHAs are useless

I thought the point of captchas was to train AI models?

So does this mean all that work is finally paying off? This is a success right?

Brokkr, to technology in AI bots are so good at mimicking the human brain and vision that CAPTCHAs are useless

That’s already built in. If you answer too quickly or too accurately (with the pictures at least), it will give you another one. Best way to beat this is to select an incorrect answer and then deselect it before submitting

Brokkr, to news in Sam Bankman-Fried living on bread and water because jail won't abide vegan diet, lawyer says

That’s a very sensationalist way to phrase your point and makes you sound fairly biased in the matter.

In the law, religious belief is a protected class, but dietary choice is not. A reasonable debate could be had about if it should be protected. The prison system nor the court room is the right forum, because it needs to be decided by the legislature.
