A little rant about lemmy.ml

I like a lot of the communities on that instance, but every once in a while I just get hit with a random wave of toxicity by them for no reason. For example, there was a post asking which communities from Reddit do you wish existed on Lemmy, and I answered honestly saying more car related communities as they are one of my...

BallsInTheShredder, (edited )

Haven’t seen too much negativity on lemmy.ml or lemmy.world but did want to say that we have a Mechanic Advice community that’s growing a little every day if you’re into that stuff. It’s a fetus now but will be grown in no time

Oh, and the community is lemmy.world/c/mechanicadvice for anyone interested!

BallsInTheShredder,

Didn’t know anyone would be interested! Here ya go lemmy.world/c/mechanicadvice join, comment and post away! If there’s anything you’d like to see in the community let me or someone else know, we’re still figuring it out

BallsInTheShredder,

Get Boost if you haven’t tried it already. It just released and has resolved issues I’ve had with other apps while also just making the whole place seem nicer… it doesn’t feel buggy anymore.

Oh, as others have mentioned Lemmy.world seems to run fine! That + boost and I can’t recall having any of the issues you’ve mentioned

As far as the rest idk I’m still feeling like a newbie after 2-3 months

Are there any prince movies for kids?

Anyone who knows about kids’ movies knows how popular princess movies are, especially Disney princesses. My child is six and absolutely loves them too. My child also loves princes and kings, but I’m having a hard time finding anything that features a character as easily beloved as Elsa or Moana for example. Even worse, a lot...

BallsInTheShredder,

The fresh prince of Bel aire was my favorite as a kid

BallsInTheShredder,

What’s that?

BallsInTheShredder,

Hey where? I need that! Have a spare m2 and want to use it!

BallsInTheShredder,

I’m new to the party and am still experimenting, not super tech savvy but I’ve been doing a few things.

I have one SD set up for retro gaming via Lakka. Wish Lakka had an option to add a desktop like RetroPie but just really love the interface and ease of use. Tried recalbox and it’s nice as well! Can’t remember why I settled for Lakka.

Another SD is for experimenting at the moment. As mentioned I’m brand new to the pi community so I’ve installed Raspbian on it and have just been testing the waters. Set up iirc my first VNC network between it, my PC and my phone. Also have been using it to rip and burn DVDs via brasero. Don’t have wifi at home, I use a hotspot which complicates using my printer wirelessly so I’m considering using the pi as a network for that. There’s also a cool program I found where you learn musical coding? It’s pretty interesting though I still don’t really know what it’s for haha.

I’d really like to do more with it but as mentioned am just learning. Hell, I just got it running a few weeks ago after it had been down for a couple years so I’m sure I l’ll be doing more when I find the time.

I’d love to set it up in my vehicle and have Spotify, gps navigation, retro gaming etc through it but seems like a big project with my limited understanding ATM.

BallsInTheShredder,

I’m starting to suspect he only wanted Twitter to kill it…

BallsInTheShredder,

God… I’ve been on the “fediverse” for months and

A: have no clue what it is

And

B: am not even entirely sure I’m on it anymore

Love Lemmy but lol this is getting confusing, is Mastodon on Lemmy or… just federated or… sheesh I need to search this

BallsInTheShredder,

I don’t understand how women cope with the lack of pockets. Purses aren’t enough. Below is an honest list of about what I carry with me every single day.

On my body: Phone Bluetooth headphones in case. Multitool with pliars, screwdrivers etc Regular knife Another multitool but it’s shaped like a card 20,000 mA portable battery sometimes Cord usb-c Cigarettes Lighter Bottled water (back pocket) Comb Wallet (sometimes) Little container for stuff, used to be weed but no more Emergency B.C in case of headache or backache *Emergen-C" packet in case of mild electrolyte deficiency

I haven’t even filled half of my total capacity. I still have 7 empty pockets and 2 pockets are only half full. But that’s not all. I bring a backpack everywhere as well.

BallsInTheShredder,

Haha! Funny thing is that my wallet is only a “sometimes” because I also bring a backpack around too so often the wallet is in there for safekeeping along with a zillion other things. Going to update the comment with the backpack comments to elaborate lol.

Oh, and the multitools, That’s a good question! I’m a mobile mechanic and am always needing one or the other. It began with just a knife and has expanded since.

1: The regular knife is for scraping gunk off of bolts, terminals etc. And also has a few edges that are the perfect size for peeling back wires. It also has a bottle opener and flathead screwdriver

2: Multitool #1 has a set of pliars, Phillips head, and a few other things I need and

3: The card shaped/sized multitool also comes in handy as it’s a tiny wrench and has cutouts for tiny bolts so I can remove them. It also functions as a decent putty scraper and has a saw I use all the time. To boot, it’s a ruler as well which is nice for sizing up small things.

I just use them all the time and they save me trips to the truck looking for wrenches/ratchets which is also why I carry the light, hope that explains my strangeness a bit lol

BallsInTheShredder,

Yes, that would be a nice green flag to me as well. Bonus points if those pockets are filled with very specific items, like little tools that seem excessive or redundant to others but are vital in getting through your day. That’s someone I wanna follow around and learn from

BallsInTheShredder,

I think cars are cool, but I prefer fire trucks.

BallsInTheShredder,

I live inside a firetruck

BallsInTheShredder,

Wait hold on, I’m just now learning how to operate my raspberry pi, what is pi-hole?

I installed Rvnc on it last week, is pi-hole similar?

BallsInTheShredder,

Translate says " actually don’t but the reason your bike is gone is because your mother gave it to me out of gratitude after I fucked her."

BallsInTheShredder,

Not from Germany but that’s a good comeback

BallsInTheShredder,

Is there a car community on Lemmy yet?

BallsInTheShredder,

Ah, yes, in my rural area that would mean walking or biking 200+ miles per day just for work and even if I was capable of that it doesn’t solve the problem of not being able to bring my tools so I can work which weigh hundreds if not a thousand pounds.

And there aren’t buses around here, not that it would solve the problem of getting my tools around. I’m all for saving the environment and establishing smaller, walkable cities but it doesn’t negate the need for automobiles - yet.

BallsInTheShredder,

While I do absolutely understand your point (and agree with you) that’s not always going to happen. Some people can’t afford to miss work for example, or would get fired for calling out/being late for the tire. I don’t necessarily blame those particular people as the deeper problem is a society in which we we’re living week to week to get buy and risk losing much if not all if even a portion of that weekly pay doesn’t come in.

Also blame employers that pay diddly and are so quick to fire people. They place profit over human life and that’s no better.

I wouldn’t drive with issues like that, but then again 1: I know cars and work on my own stuff and 2: I can afford to miss a day of work every now and then.

So while I agree and don’t support people driving cars with dangerous issues, I also understand that some people are so desperate that it’s not really an option, also a mechanic isn’t cheap and people don’t much help others nowadays.

BallsInTheShredder,

Oh no… I’m not on here often but noticed this comment section felt like “home” for some reason…

BallsInTheShredder,

You really had me rooting for you until you turned to the dark side in the second paragraph lol.

Maybe instead of a muffler you could just install a muffler sound simulator on your phone or something and listen to the sounds quietly while you drive?

BallsInTheShredder, (edited )

I’m not anti-car a bit, I’m a mechanic from a family of mechanics and though I appreciate the sound of a nice engine running, I don’t see the value in volume personally. Loud doesn’t equate to running efficiently or having power (edit) all of the time.

I also hear so many at work that maybe it’s taken the fun out of it. Nothing like having engines constantly running full throttle around you all day to make you value a quiet ride home.

I definitely get it as a car guy, I just have had loud engines bother me so much throughout life that I try and be as considerate as possible unless it’s absolutely necessary but again I don’t judge you, it’s just not for me. Gas engines bother plenty of people but I still like and drive em so hey I’m no different

BallsInTheShredder,

That’s what people who mod their muffler to sound fast or powerful are doing

“Listen to my 1988 delta roooar! It can go sooo fast roooar! It’s sooo loud because it’s sooo powerful!”

BallsInTheShredder,

Good point, we do have mechanic-advice now and just rolled into the shop though

I can’t believe that’s the predominant view on this platform but have heard a lot

BallsInTheShredder,

There’s a mechanic advice page but not many have asked for advice. This is a shameless plug bc somehow I ended up being a part of that place and would love to see it active

BallsInTheShredder,

Collect moon and starlight

BallsInTheShredder,

I wish I didn’t need hands for my job, 90% of it is brain work with a tinker here and there. I see so many videos of robotic hands being used for things and can’t wait for the day I can just send one of these out to a site equipped with some tools and just remotely tap into the video stream. It’s coming and I don’t think it will be too long. Hell, I’m just a layman and if you gave me a dedicated year and some funding I could get something viable up to par so I’m sure it’s possible, guess it just won’t profit anyone enough to sell it yet.

BallsInTheShredder,

I think you’re onto something. U.S citizen here and I actually love driving stick but where I live it’s a few hour drive to anywhere which makes driving a manual seem like more of a hassle, whereas those long trips in an automatic feel leisurely and I’m more well rested when I arrive.

Couple that with manuals more commonly found in larger trucks around here. I work on vehicles, see many and can’t remember the last small car or truck that was manual. It’s all semi’s, dump trucks, dualies, you know? Big trucks which adds another barrier to people.

I feel like if there were smaller manuals in my area then perception would change. As it is they’re reserved for work, big work at that.

It’s sad to lose manuals in society but I’m seeing them less and less, everything seems to be going electric now, even companies known for diesel manuals.

BallsInTheShredder,

I miss when devices came with infrared transmitters… Also it had a mini sim & built-in Bluetooth/wifi at that time, wow.

BallsInTheShredder,

Refer to your bio for being unduly rude

BallsInTheShredder, (edited )

KkI wouldn’t even say the iphone was more advanced than what came before it haha.

I still have 2 fully functioning Palm TX devices from 20 or so years ago, they were released mid 2005 while iPhone was June 2007 I think?

Looking back, I cannot fathom (aside from marketing) how apple beat palm in that market.

Here are the specs, keep in mind the TX was released several years before the original iPhone Ram: Palm TX: 128 Mb iPhone: 128Mb Screen palm TX: 480×320 iPhone 480×320 Processor TX: 312Mhz iPhone 416 Mhz

So, for a 3 year or so delay, the original iPhone imo still doesn’t completely dwarf the TX, but I’m also not through as there are plenty of features that the TX had but the iPhone lacked.

The TX was also touch screen (I find it much more responsive) and was meant for a stylus instead of fingers. To this day, I still love writing and drawing on the TX. Oh, and the stylus fits neatly into the TX on the right side. Also, it has a nice little replaceable flip cover for the screen.

But that’s not all, it has an SD card slot for expandable storage, something the iPhone omitted.

It also has wifi 302.11b support and Bluetooth as well, yes, Bluetooth in 2005 and it was very easy to activate and use.

But no, that’s not all, it also had an IR transmitter/receiver! Something the iPhone helped to kill. Those things were underrated!

They made the TX the perfect universal remote! I had a program on the TX that listed every T.V/DVD/VCR/Cable etc. Manufacturer you could imagine, you’d just select the manufacturer for the device you wanted to control, aim the TX at it and bam, you had control.

This helped me a lot as essentially I could control almost any device I could see. Lost remote for the DVD player? TX got you. It wasn’t just for t.v’s and whatnot though, many things run on IR and I miss when smart devices supported it.

Ah, and I’m still not done, the TX had BUTTONS. Actual factual buttons. Not only was it 100% touch screen, but it had 4 buttons and a directional pad with another button in the middle iirc.

Those buttons made it great for emulation and I believe I had a snes emulator on it though that may have just been Nes, either way, the buttons were much more fun to play with than touch screen, it made the device actually feel… made for what you were using it to do.

In fact, everything on the device felt made for what you were doing, and not just an afterthought. It came preloaded with plenty of useful apps. A web browser that was even YouTube capable for one, which in 2006 or so when I got the TX blew my mind, YouTube in my Palm?

Maybe I went a little overboard in this comment but my point is, damn, some more competition may have been nice.

Oh, and one last thing, My TX devices still run like the day I got them, hell, the battery life is insane as well. I left one on for at least 2 weeks and it still had power last I checked. How many original iPhones that were opened in 2007 are still running? Heck, even an iPhone 5 from 2012, how many of those are still up and running?

Yet my 2005 TX runs just the same as it always did. It’s insane to look at a device from 2005 and feel like in 2023 we should be taking notes, but we should.

Our devices won’t last that long on standby today because they’re filled with bloatware processes that refuse to stop running. The TX powers up instantly after it’s been sitting for days and will be on 99% battery. My modern smart phone will kill its own battery within a day or two, tops, just sitting on my desk without me touching it.

Palm needs to make a comeback. Devices with SD, IR, buttons, built in stylus etc. Should as well.

Oh, and the OS was perfect. Calendar, web, paint etc, an Aux jack, these little things were and still are badass. If it wasn’t for the limited capability due to not being able to access the web like before I’d probably still use them daily.

But I’d never use an original iPhone daily, they just aren’t good for anything that I can’t do with any other device.

Not that I’m anti IPhone as I realize my comment seems, don’t get me wrong I do prefer androids for my uses but iPhones aren’t too shabby either. Top notch hardware, all of their devices sharing the same hardware also mean their apps tend to be better optimized and more reliable, etc. They’re dependable, reliable devices but… my Palm from 20 years ago can do things no iPhone can, like still run after 2 decades, control IR devices, have an SD card inserted etc.

The closest thing I’ve had to a TX was an LG Stylo 6, and for it’s day if was a decent device but the screen cracked in my pocket within a year and the battery life had shortened significantly. I was carrying around mophies and chargers like nobody’s business. My TX though? 2 decades without even a scratch that I can see on either of the 2 that I own, and when I’m using it the battery almost seems limitless as I can go for quite some time using it without seeing that 99% battery drop a digit.

I know we’ve changed battery types a time or two since then but can’t help but wonder how are modern batteries are so unreliable in comparison? Planned obsolescence is a factor, surely because I’m seeing a year or so tops before major performance reduction with these lithium ions of late. Whereas the TX still outlasts them 20 years later,

Just love my old tech and wish it were updated! I’d love a new palm device built as well as the TX was.

BallsInTheShredder,

Wait, floating apps as in being able to keep an app in the corner (like YouTube) when I’m using another app primarily right? iOS just got that?

It’s definitely old for Android as I can remember it being a thing for at least 5 years, and before that it was P-I-P “Picture in Picture” even on old CRT t.v’s with cable boxes lol. My old “Web TV” setup had PIP and was already old when I got it in the early 2000’s

BallsInTheShredder,

Genuinely curious, what did iOS have first that Android then adopted? Not doubting at all just curious as to what

BallsInTheShredder,

They just got widgets? Widgets have been on Android since my first smart phone in 2011 at the very least

BallsInTheShredder,

I miss them so much. Those, and IR transmitters being common, That’s a major one to me. Almost 20 years ago, I had control of every single T.V, DVD player, VCR, etc. That came my way thanks to the palm TX, it had IR and a nice little app where you’d just choose the make/model of the device you’re trying to control and bam, your screen became the remote you needed. Iirc the buttons also could be used so you didn’t necessarily have to do everything touch screen.

Now on my super fancy modern smart phone I couldn’t dream of doing that. Hell, I even struggle to use it as a remote for my Roku because I use my device as a hotspot and Roku requires both devices be on the same network. Why can’t we figure out how to do what we did so easily 2 decades ago?!

BallsInTheShredder,

Yes, Zune! Had one of those, a Palm TX and a PSP Design wise? Apart from cellular connectivity the Palm TX is pretty similar to an iPhone imo. More of an upgrade really, even though it released several years before the original iPhone.

Had a built in stylus, 312 mhz processor, touch screen, Bluetooth, Infrared, Wifi, flip cover (which took smartphones a while to adapt to) 128 MB ram just like iPhone, 480×320 screen like iPhone, heck even a Nes emulator. It’s so similar that I really feel like Apple took note, even had its own Palm OS.

And it releases 2+ years before the iPhone… if only they were hyped more and had access to cell networks.

When the first iPhone released I paid virtually no attention bc I’d been having devices that did similar and more for a while already

Heck the TX even had an App where you could select virtually any T.V and use it as a remote via IR, can’t do that shit on an iPhone even today

Oh, and expandable storage via SD cards. Idk how we downgraded

BallsInTheShredder,

I like that “unknown” is OSX’s biggest competitor

BallsInTheShredder,

Oh okay, I’m late to the party on that and actually had to Google it. I’ve just been using split screen for that purpose haha

BallsInTheShredder,

Haha I agree with that actually, I’m an Android fan but don’t see the issue with all the copying. If iPhone users want it and we have it, why can’t they? Also, conversely, if there’s an iOS feature that I don’t yet have so what if I finally get it?

I can’t too much understand being all too competitive about this. plus, comparing them is apples to oranges. Apple, who I actually used to work for 😂 is one company making one device.

Android? Anyone can make one, anyone can make apps for them. Of COURSE we’re going to get some features first.

And yes, you’re also right, depending on the manufacturer some Android devices have had features we’re just now getting today many, many years ago but as we’re not consolidated into one company sometimes they’re forgotten or omitted from later Android barebones cores.

Screen sharing being one of those things lol. I’ve had it on a few devices throughout the years but probably couldn’t pinpoint the device as I’ve switched between Google, Motorola, LG etc. And also try more 3rd party stuff than most. I believe the first time I saw it native was OS10 or whatever it’s called as that was my last phone, a Motorola Ace something from Verizon.

Good phone btw! Had some badass features that iOS most likely doesn’t have yet, like can you flick your wrist twice to activate the camera instantly anytime for quick shots? Or can you shake it twice to activate the flashlight?

However, the fucking cameras on that thing were awful. Advertised as 48Mp but really just a 12, 2 and 16 megapixel camera strapped to the back. Why? Because not Apple. With an iPhone you know that you’re getting something consistent with great hardware. Some of the androids I get may have a feature or two that iOS doesn’t yet have, but I also miss out sometimes and have to pay for that feature in other ways because androids are the wild west of smartphones.

Love my androids for my personal needs, freedom and the price but can definitely get why iPhones work better for some.

Also, yes the privacy shit is insane on these devices. I constantly have to fight to keep it from spying and sending reports about my usage to anyone that will listen.

BallsInTheShredder,

It used to work at Apple tech support like a decade ago. I know bc I worked IT and our little program gave us a heads up about A: how long people had waited in cue and B: if they had cussed a.k.a were angry. When angry customers got to me there’d be a little angry emoji on the screen lol and those customers still tended to be cussing when I picked up. Anyway, I was always told that was how you skip cue and confirmed bc on days where the average wait time for a cx was say 20 minutes I’d get angry cussers that had only been in line for a few minutes. On the flip side I can confirm this doesn’t skip cue for Verizon (noticeably) as I’ve cussed that robot 10 times to no avail. Dmv doesn’t care either, but Apple once did.

BallsInTheShredder,

Tbh it did affect me, I had just joined and it was out often, & it seemed like a hassle (being new) to find and join new instances or w/e especially when I had to create a new account for every one. Didn’t necessarily think it was trash just buggy and unreliable especially for that to be happening during such a big migration (after Reddit changed the api’s)

Idk it’s nice here but that did reduce my usage. Something that I’m new on being down for a day or two means I’m less likely to use it the next day and incorporate it into my daily routine

BallsInTheShredder,

winaero was a game changer, what is ShutUp10?

BallsInTheShredder,

I’m one. First found Reddit around 2011 iirc and yeah, the changes of the past 5-7 years took much of what brought me there in the first place away. The most recent API changes, killing the app that made me a daily user in the first place were just the cherry on top and what really crosses the line for me. Censor it all you want, hated that but what site isn’t censored to the brim nowadays? But take away my favorite apps and basically extort the developer? Nah.

BallsInTheShredder,

What a coincidence I discovered the site around 2011 and it was the API changes that did it for me too. They’d already made the site terrible and the only thing that helped make it tolerable was Boost (for me) with that out the window and them basically extorting the devs I just couldn’t in good conscience keep using it.

BallsInTheShredder,

Exactly. Of all those I graduated with, the ones that became cops were all either meatheads or were bullied by the meatheads. The hall monitor type would also for sure make sense

BallsInTheShredder,

Like the back of my head is my good side
