BEZORP,

Can't say personally, but for many it's the first time they're even looking at what other engines have to offer.

BEZORP,

Why I would separate the artist from what they made? I'm interested in what they have to say about the world. That's the point of art.

It's not just content to make me happy until the next hit. Like, it has meaning.

BEZORP,

I think we have very different ways of enjoying art. I don't really understand how it's possible for at to have nothing with the artist's views, unless it were totally random. Actually, even that would be saying something.

But I get the feeling that we look at art pretty differently.

BEZORP,

Canvas straps can be good quality, less sticky, and last way beyond the lifespan of any consumer grade electronic device.

Not to sound like I'm a textiles expert, so don't come at me

BEZORP,

Yeah but now imagine they were part of a sixty year old computer. Kind of a waste if you ask me.

The electronics here will be grossly obsolete within five years.

BEZORP,

Well vegans do it, so it must be available enough

BEZORP,

Human rights don't exist either. These are legal and philosophical concepts that we decide on, not fundamental constants.

BEZORP,

I got that, I was just repeating the number. My point is that leather is more durable than is necessary for a consumer electronic, especially one from Apple which has made planned obsolescence continuous innovation a cornerstone of their business.

Passenger on Ill-Fated Diarrhea Plane Says Flight Attendants Were Forced to Craft "Makeshift Biohazard Suits" (futurism.com)

On Friday, an international Delta flight bound for sunny Barcelona was forced to U-turn back to its starting point, Atlanta, for an exceedingly rare air travel horror: a passenger had suffered diarrhea throughout the plane’s aisle so extensively that completing the flight was deemed untenable....

BEZORP,

On the flip side, they are immune to any other "cringe attacks" that come up. Who knows it might be strangely liberating

BEZORP,

We are told how to use our money. That's what taxes are.

BEZORP,

If I'm at a birthday party and we're only getting cake crumbs and someone comes by and offers me a slice, then yeah it's nice for me, but how can they afford to just be giving away cake at a crumb party? It's not just charity, it's inequality and people with more money want credit parting with the surplus they've accumulated.

I'm not even talking about millionaires. They're down here with the rest of us as far as I'm concerned. You can earn millions by directly working for it.

But anyway when I give money to the local animal rescue, it stings a bit, because that's money out of my pocket that I would have otherwise spent. And I'm well off compared to most.

A billionaire is so far beyond that you may as well not even call it "money" for them, because it's so different then what you or I associate with the term. Their lifestyle will never be at risk of having to change because they spent too much.

They have insane, unethical, embarrassing, pernicious, criminal amounts of available capital.

BEZORP,

Hell if you've given your pocket change to a panhandler in the last few years you're probably being more generous, comparatively

BEZORP,

So we should... praise them for their donation even though they know they are materially contributing to wealth inequality in their country?

Yes the rest of us are also part of a system of exploitation (and that's bad and I hope you are all combating against it as best you can), but we're much more beholden to it, seeing as how our actual survival requires full lifelong participation in that system.

If there's anyone that could be considered "above capitalism" it's the billionaires. They actually have some individual power to shift the rules of the game they know is crooked. Or at least not take take take take and still want praise for giving away a micron of a rounding error of their wealth.

BEZORP,

I get ya. I'm also privileged enough that I used to be able to ignore politics unless it was really in my face, because most of it didn't affect me directly.

But some people's actual identities, bodies, their continued existence, is political - whether they like it or not.

So I'm sorry. We live in interesting times. Historical times. Some people feel we might be at the end of history. It's going to get loud.

BEZORP,

I'm finding it's the opposite. Depending on what thread I stumble into I'll get wildly different takes

BEZORP,

I think a part of it is the same old "normies are invading our community." A bunch of the queer old guard of fedi are having to dent the new kids into shape.

I'm seeing a lot more centrist takes than I did before, and we all know what that leads to

BEZORP,

Is there a client that lets you easily block vote counts and buttons?

I remember RedReader did this for the bad old place, and it greatly improved my QoL while browsing. I only looked at what people were saying.

BEZORP,

It actually leads to at best inertia

BEZORP,

I know a few nurses in the neighbourhood and this is basically their survival strategy.

BEZORP,

Same. Honestly it got me to stop putting butter on my toast. It's so nasty.

BEZORP,

The Best of World SF is undeniably an excellent sampler of voices from around the world, both of authors and of translators.

The editor comes off as maybe a bit self-centred? But I can't deny they have excellent taste and connections.

You should learn how to properly write accessible image captions as the fediverse has a large amount of blind and visually impaired users who rely on screen readers (mashable.com)

Right now there is a bit left to be desired when it comes to lemmys accessibility features, but it’s a good idea to be mindful of the fact the fediverse and its platforms tends to have pretty universal accessibility features that will likely come to lemmy sooner rather than later

BEZORP, (edited )

I can't really think of a case where a post's image isn't relevant to the associated discussion. Even if it's just a nonsense post with an unrelated image, knowing what the irrelevant image is about would help make sense of the discussion.

Not enough info is better than nothing. Because if it's nothing, you can't tell if the person who shared the image is lazy or decided the alt text wasn't necessary for this particular picture

BEZORP,

Fedi seems to be really great for accessibility from what I've seen. At least I've never never interacted with so many visually impaired people before joining mastodon. So I'd say that culture is working.

I believe there's a nice way to go about (honey v vinegar, etc), but generally yeah, it feels really good to be in a virtual space that is so welcoming.

BEZORP,

I'm not seeing any downvotes on the kbin web app

BEZORP,

Not a lot of things more basic than your gender.

It's easy for us cis folks to hand wave it away as pointless frippery, since everyone already acknowledges our gender identity.

We have the privilege of not even having to think about it or question how we feel.

Not so easy for some other people.

BEZORP,

I didn't really even think about it at all, since I fit in pretty well. I just ignored it. But I'm cis af, and not everyone is. So I can see the benefit to those people.

Also I don't think you remember how arbitrary all the gender norms sound when you first learn them. It all sounds totally unnatural at first.

BEZORP,

My point is it's learned behaviour. Most people just forget the learning of it

BEZORP,

They're still around! Discourse, phpbb, etc make it super easy to set up and administer. You don't even need coding knowledge. I'm part of a forum that's been going since the early oughts myself. Old Ocremix forums diaspora.

Think of it like a bookclub. You've just got to find some folks and get cracking

BEZORP,

Welcome!

BEZORP,

I think this and the stuff happening at Twitter are a nice kickstart to get lemmy and other ferdiverse stuff going.

Long live the ferdervers!

But seriously, I'm with you in sentiment. I'm never going back to the centralised/for-profit soc med services.

All their value comes from the free interactions between people chatting, and they think they deserve to get rich for renting the hall. Fuck that, we can just rent the infrastructure ourselves if that's what it takes to talk in peace.

I figured I’d try some acoustics out, too. They really are pleasant to write with, and the lines are darker than HB lead in the mechanicals.

I’ve been trying to calm my handwriting. Pencils let me stop, erase, and try slower.

BEZORP,

@mph that looks like a Blackwing to me. I didn't realise this design existed elsewhere.

Anyway I'm a fan of pencils, too! Wish we had more of a community around here

BEZORP,

They're neat (I've only tried Uni's), though imho I prefer the manual control of a regular mech/pencil when writing in cursive, because then I can choose when to rotate the lead (ie by rotating the entire pencils).

If you're used to writing with pencils you don't even think about it anymore. It's as natural as dotting an i.

BEZORP,

Usually play some Doom 1 or 2, a level or an episode, or Minecraft if I have more time, but I'm in a boring replay/comfort phase because work is kicking my ass atm

BEZORP,

My face when I'm trying to use tar and realise I don't have my shell history on this machine

BEZORP,

That's nice. I'm glad to hear it

BEZORP,

I'd guess like 0.2 a year for me, since it's been a few years, and I don't see myself ever eating another unless it's offered to me.

I do like cookies though

Is there any one else who feels like their life has been disrupted by this whole debacle with Reddit. (kbin.social)

I really do like KBin and Lemmy and the fediverse on the whole, but development is still young and the userbase still growing. KBin is still basically early access, and Lemmy is buggy. I spent alot of time in reddit and I'm feeling the pain of trying to ween myself from it. Just wanted to here community perspectives and see how...

BEZORP,

Third Culture Kid

Wow just knowing that it's so common an experience that there's a name for it is comforting.

Thank you so much for sharing that.

BEZORP,

That sounds nice. Similarly I've been in a book club for about two years now that was started on Reddit.

Although we haven't read a book in months, we still meet virtually every week, so I guess we're just friends now.

The ultimate test of these kinds of groups seems to be whether they can survive transplantation from one social medium to another. I wonder how my little book club would fare if there was a schism over using discord...

Maybe there is a board here that would help you set up something like that? It can't hurt to look around and put out some feelers.

BEZORP,

Thanks, added it to my to-be-read list. My preference is fiction these days, but I'm not above mixing in an academic book every now and then
