It was really annoying at one point last year, it was like my brain was playing a joke on me.

It startled me like three times in one night. When it happened a fourth time, it was just annoying.

Yeah, at this point I’ve stopped eating dark chocolate. I love the taste of dark chocolate, but I don’t love it that much.

We already warn consumers about the safe levels of ozone found in water bottles. Why aren’t we regulating and creating adequate warnings for literal lead and cadmium? It’s not like they’re immune to being tested. It’s not like their negative side effects are undiscovered.

Lead and cadmium can do some pretty nasty stuff to the body. It’s also in most cheap jewelry ( common in places like Ardenes, H&M, AE, etc), and almost all children’s jewelry (common in places like Claires, the Childrens place, etc). Some of it is at a pretty high concentration, too.

Scary stuff.

I think it also depends on whether or not they were provided the education to use the internet well. If all people get is a vague “have at 'er!”, of course we would have more echo chambers. Ever hear the saying “don’t believe everything you read online?”

Properly teaching people how to verify their information sources and how to reflect on things would probably result in fewer echo chambers. “Huh. I don’t want to keep looking like a fool who spreads obviously false things around.”

There’s also internal bias to think about here. If someone is already dead-set in believing only their current mindset, they’re likely not going to be open to other sources. Instead, they’re probably going to search for whatever will back up their claim. People don’t usually try to prove themselves wrong in an argument.

This means that part of getting rid of echo chambers will also be teaching people to accept and acknowledge their own errors. We should be teaching people to go for the best answer, not to just prove themselves right. In this way, this problem also preceeds the internet. That mindset has hindered science for literal centuries. It even goes back to the first days of science in Greece. (Thanks for that attempted halt of progress, religion.)

It’s easier to blame the internet than the people doing these things. Sadly though, it’s in human nature.

I agree mostly, but the cinnamon challenge and the chubby bunny challenge were a thing years before tik tok was released. People have been posting themselves doing dumb things online to follow trends for a pretty long time.

I agree that it could totally be a possibility, though. I just don’t want to give tik tok undue credit.

Hey, so be careful if you’re planning to move up north-up north.

The ground has started exploding in some areas that have permafrost, and some of the lakes are starting to release a lot of methane. Think Alaska and Siberia.

bbc.com/…/20201130-climate-change-the-mystery-of-…

The weather is probably going to be fucky in one way or another everywhere you go. I don’t think there will be an area that you can move to to really escape climate change. Wildfires are kicking the butts of many communities that are further north, and the winter ice storms that happen are pretty deadly too. I can’t imagine that those things will go away or improve anytime soon, since they are heavily thought to be linked to climate change.

Some of the great lakes are so polluted now that the governments of both the US and Canada have recommend a safe yearly maximum number of fish to consume. The limit for at least one of those species is literally zero, due to how much fish absorb from the water around them. These are “forever chemicals” that are being absorbed.

We still need to try to work on climate change, regardless of location. I hope that people don’t think moving north will protect them from the effects of climate change, because it probably really won’t.

I know that you probably already know that, but I would like more people to see this stuff. I’ve seen too many people saying that they think just moving up north will make them safe from climate change.

I used to just cut the top off of the box using a kitchen knife. I would start just below one of the corners, with the box on it’s side, and I sawed through it.

I got some funny looks for that one when I first did it on autopilot around other people lmao.

You know that the serrated lines on the box aren’t great when cutting the cardboard with a kitchen knife is legitimately easier. The blade wasn’t even serrated.

If those companies are like the one I worked for, they likely outsource their packaging production. The company that makes boxes for tampons might also make boxes for pizza restaurants, certain cleaning tools, cookies, baby food, etc.

The vendors that my previous company purchased from were cheeky buggers. One of our products that was only sold to retailers included a display shelf. These things used to be pretty sturdy. Now, they collapse under less than half of the weight that they used to have. The vendor denied it vehemently, and I think they are still lying about it to this day.

This particular vendor has a HUGE monopoly on cardboard, so it would be difficult for them to find another process suddenly. I hope they do, but who knows. They might hypothetically have a contract that they can’t break for another number of years. Yay.

I’m not saying any of this to say that it’s ok or good, but a lot of people can’t see what’s happening inside these manufacturing facilities. A lot of this is hush hush.

It’s been this way for years. I remember when reddit started getting influxes of highschoolers.

Don’t get me wrong, everyone should have a voice. That being said, I’m not sure most teenagers are really able to fully participate or advise on a lot of topics. For example, most teenagers won’t be able have solid marriage advice, nor will most of them have hands on experience working.

One of the worst examples that comes to mind was this thread on AITA where the parent was wondering if selling the car that they promised their son to keep a roof over ther head was immoral. For context, the father died a long time ago, and they had bad medical bills to pay. It was pretty easy to spot the lack of nuance in the comments on that thread, I have to tell ya. Shelter isn’t something that you’re really OK without. Many people seemed to think it wasn’t necessary, and that a teenager needed a car (that wasn’t in his name) more than he needed a roof over his head. I was flabbergasted, to be honest.

That’s even ignoring what being in prison for that long will do to you mentally. From what I’ve heard, it’s almost a whole other world in there.

I can’t imagine getting out after spending 15 years of my life in prison, and being able to keep the same quirks and mannerisms. Everything is just different. It’s tough for fully grown adults to transition through, let alone someone who spent the last half of their teens.

That being said, neither of those two dead people will ever get to see a sunrise again. They’ll never get to feel the wind on their face, or tell their parents that they love them. For what?

Intentionally murdering innocent people is despicable and soulless. I hope that they give her a lot of therapy and mental help in there. What a tragic end for such young lives.

I don’t get the rage that some of these comments have from seeing this meme.

It doesn’t say that anyone actually did or said anything, just that their expression dropped after seeing an infant board a plane.

People are allowed to be disappointed. I mean, I don’t think that most parents actually love hearing screaming and/or crying either. Is a (probably) brief facial expression seriously the same as hating all children, or wishing for them to dissapear to some of you guys? Jeez Louise.

I mean, normally I wouldn’t give a hoot either way. Kids on the plane, no kids on the plane, whatever. If I had a migraine that day though, yeah, I wouldn’t be thrilled. I wouldn’t be upset at anyone for the noise in the slightest, but I also wouldn’t be joyful about it.

Are we certain that that’s the actual contect of the picture, or did someone just say it was? Is this the accurate, OG text on the picture? Did any one of those people actually say or do anything beyond a facial expression when seeing very small children board the plane?

Some of you guys need to take a deep breath and just relax. I’m referring to both extremes with this.

Yeah, for me, a company having a union shouldn’t really have much of an effect if they are actually treating their employees well.

What wage discrepancies would there be to negotiate? Why would there be any arguing over allotted sick time? Why would an employee have a grievance against a company that they would need legal support for?

A company that truly wants to treat it’s employees well should already be on board with all of that stuff. In fact, I’d almost even argue that they should want a union.

Angry_Maple,
@Angry_Maple@sh.itjust.works avatar

I don’t know about you guys, but this reality is starting to feel more and more like the things that we used to see in movies. The kind of things that were so bizarre that we scoffed at. I don’t like where this is all heading, especially considering it’s happening much faster than initially predicted. It just keeps gaining momentum.

I know we’re not doomed yet, but most people don’t seem to give a hoot. Others see snow and denounce that any of this has anything to do with global warming. It’s a bit depressing sometimes, tbh.

It makes sense to me now, but I never thought that I would see a headline like this.

It can be really easy to change what’s on a label, to be honest. Just set everything up with some time buffer, and there won’t be any disruptions.

I’ll never understand why more information is bad. I’m sure some people with allergies would love to easily know what’s in booze before they buy/drink it.

Angry_Maple,

I agree with you. It’s not like most of these trips are creating any advancements. People are dying so that other people can see a view and brag about it. What a terrible return for a human life.

I’m all for saving lives and looking out for eachother. That being said, many of these expeditions come with a dumb expectation that random people should also be willing to die. You shouldn’t be able to intentionally do things for fun that you know will likely risk other people’s lives. Many kids have lost their parents because of this.

I kind of doubt that the people who live there really feel like they have a way out at this point. Even if they found a way to be financially stable outside of this industry, I feel like a large amount of very selfish people would be angry that they couldn’t go on these trips with the natives anymore. How could they stop people from showing up?

Maybe people shouldn’t be going on a mountain that’s known to be deadly if they know that they will absolutley need to rely on a guide to survive. Maybe people should be working their way up mountain difficulty, and not just starting at the extreme ones. People should also start to respect the danger of being on a fucking mountain.

So many of these deaths would have been avoided if these expeditions weren’t a thing. If people can’t do this safely without continuously risking the lives of others, we should seriously look into stopping it. So many families are permanently missing loved ones because of this industry.

We don’t clean ours as often as we probably should, but our fridge is also weird to begin with. It has this fun habit where it gets so cold that the top shelf will literally form ice, and that’s if we have it on the medium setting. On the high setting, it turns into a vertical freezer lol.

It looks sick in the dark sometimes, because you can literally see the cold air coming out.

My grandmother was an amazing woman who devotes her life helping others. She was a nurse who also volunteered at old folks homes in her free time, and she donated to many good causes. She loved the teaching of Jesus. Her dad was a WWII vet, and she cared deeply about treating others with love and charity.

She passed away over a decade ago, and while I still don’t like the idea that she’s gone, I’m happy that she never had to see this all of this happening. She would have been absolutely crushed.

Is the person you’re responding to not also using their free speech?

It’s ironic, because you’re implying that they shouldn’t make comments on their thoughts about this, because the thought of censorship upsets you.

Don’t forget that complaining and critiquing are also under the idea of free speech, even if you disagree with the other person.

Angry_Maple,

I think this might become more common over time.

Up to this point, a lot of the news company’s online presence was probably pretty cut and dry. Some of my local news stations have terrible websites that take forever to load, yet those websites were probably cutting edge at some point. One of them has a layout that hasn’t changed in at least 10 years.

If their IT department hasn’t expanded their skills beyond making and maintaining those original websites, I could totally see a long delay happening before/if they join the fediverse.

When I see clouds behind someone (especially in shots with angles like this), I tend to think that they are legitimate clouds unless there is obvious Photoshop. There was a very long time where natural lighting was preferred over artificial lighting for shots like this.

Why would someone go through the immense effort to make artificial lighting look like natural lighting when natural lighting is already there and it’s completely free?

Are photoshopped clouds more normal than legitimate clouds now? Did I miss something?

Angry_Maple,

I still want to know why these people care at all.

Personally, I don’t even want to think about the genitals of 99% of the people that I’ve met. I honestly don’t want to know, it has nothing to do with me. I’m more than OK leaving some things unsaid. I don’t want to know. If you tell me your own gender or preferred name, cool, I’ll respect that and leave it at that. You’ll never see me asking if someone is trans. I won’t push privacy, and again, it’s none of my business unless it is.

Why do these people care so much about complete stranger’s genitals? It is an obsession or a fetish? Is it just xenophobia?

The thought never even crosses my mind. I would be super grossed out if a stranger ever asked about mine, tbh. It’s weird shit to judge an entire human off of, if you ask me.

If a strangers bits are important to you, you should really look into why that is.

Angry_Maple,
@Angry_Maple@sh.itjust.works avatar

It’s a fumbly one, eh?

I agree that in an existence with that decision on the line, we would have to question many things.

Does someone innocent have to die, or is someone lying about the rules of the decision to save themselves? Would people who expect to kill this person be willing to offer same thing themselves? If not, why can they decide for someone else? Is the death actually necessary, and how? Will new religions form from this?

What happens if it fails? Will that person just be dead for no reason? Will their loved ones be cared for? Who would even qualify?

Angry_Maple,
@Angry_Maple@sh.itjust.works avatar

Eh, it also depends on where you live. I don’t know what it’s like over there, but we have an addiction crisis where I live. People steal many odd things, sometimes because they like them, sometimes to sell them, and other times because they hatch a crazy plan that they give up on halfway through.

We definitely have certain people that are regularly kicked out of stores due to prior misbehaviour. (Assult, theft, biohazard stuff, etc.) Sometimes there’s only so much that you can deal with from the same person, you know? It can get to the point where you just ban someone.

Angry_Maple,

Angry_Maple,

Imo when it comes to topics like that, people tend to be able to just brush it off as a silly internet thing.

A silly internet thing is not necessarily equivalent a toxic community. I’m good with annoying posts, but a lot of people are taking other people’s personal decisions a little too personally. I find that behaviour more annoying than I ever found the bean posts, tbh.

Why would someone spend their free time somewhere that they feel brings bad aspects to their life? Why would someone want to deal with a lot of negativity over (let’s be honest) pretty minor things? Of course some users will get put off by that. It’s why some people left Reddit years ago.

Angry_Maple,

Funny how those same people still expect others to put in the time and effort for that work, eh?

I might prefer potatoes, but you might hate potatoes.

If we were looking at dishes in a restaurant, I might think one dish is a better value, because I like potatoes. You might think that that dish isn’t worth it if you hate potatoes. It doesn’t mean that the dish is better or worse, just that we have different preferences.

I don’t use sync myself, so I can’t speak on what specific aspects other people prefer over the FOSS apps. They might trust the developer more because they’ve interacted with them for a while, they might like how the UI works with their specific device, or they might even just like the logo. At the end of the day, it doesn’t effect me, as I can just keep using jerboa.

With all this talk about sync's pricing...

I think now is a great time to remind everyone, like sync’s developer, Lemmy’s developers need to be paid too! The amount of time all the devs put into making lemmy exist, in my opinion, should be worth some of your money. If you can afford it, donating to the people who develop lemmy and/or the people keeping your home...

I left because of how reddit treated the 3rd part app Devs, suddenly forcing them to cancel subscriptions halfway through the year. (They could have given the Devs a heads up, but chose not to.) I left because of the libel that was being spread about a dev. For me, it wasn’t that they wanted to charge money to use reddit, it’s how they went about it that made me leave and not return.

Of course, they also forgot about blind people and moderating tools. They then kicked many mods for voicing their opinion and/or participating the blackout, even if the subreddit in question was in agreement with them.

I don’t see Sync doing any of that, so please speak for yourself on why the migration happened.

I hope that the lame jokes that were recycled for well over a year stay there, though. Certain repeated jokes were becoming just as annoying as ads.

Those “jokes” actually caused me to start blocking people, and I’ll do it again if I have to lol. It was like reading the same comment over and over again, which got pretty boring.

Angry_Maple,

It’s funny how NONE of these comments saying that the dev earned millions have a legitimate source. It’s always just “pretty sure”, “I assumed”, “I figured” etc.

This recent trend of people telling other people to go back to reddit over (frankly minor) disagreements is ironically really reddit-esque behaviour, imo. That website was atrocious for gatekeeping behaviours.

“Our community is not like reddit!” Uh- huh. All of that stuff seems to be moving to lemmy, too.

Anyways, thank you for not randomly name calling like some other people are.

YSK: Browsing "ALL" at work might get you pulled into an office, even with NSFW off.

Why YSK: It appears several Lemmy Instances are flagged as suspicious and at least 1 instance intentionally using the name of ransomware. Angry_Maple,

I agree that it shouldn’t be an extreme either way. Like you mentioned, it’s crazy that the Happy Birthday song is still copyrighted. It was composed by two people, and the last of the two composers of that song died in 1946 . The last creator has been dead since the year after WWII ended, and the song is still copyrighted.

On the other hand, I think that having time-specific copyright is still very important for a lot of artists and creators. If anyone can create and sell merchandise based on you, you’ll lose control of your brand image/reputation. If no one has to pay for creative work, it won’t be reasonable to continue that art/passion for many people. If artists, authors and the like can’t make income from their work, they’ll have to spend their time at a regular job instead of working on the next cool thing. That also means that we probably won’t get the next cool thing.

Most people don’t want to work hard on something just for someone else can take credit for it, even on a small scale. I think that that’s reasonable, especially for creative works. If it was actually easy to create these things, everyone probably would, no? If creating art is as effortless as some people claim, those people should have no problem respecting those copyright protections. They can just easily make their own, right?

I feel terrible for the people who have worked on their craft for their whole life, as now they’re having to worry about losing the protections that let them do their thing.

There’s no way that only regular people would take advantage of copyright protections dissapearing. This would probably turn into many "artist vs xy corporation " scenarios, but it would also be in more places than just music. Can you imagine the implications for other industries? Big companies would totally just steal ideas and works from small businesses. Not having copyright laws would mean that the law would be on the big companies side, and that the small business owner would be screwed.

Angry_Maple,
@Angry_Maple@sh.itjust.works avatar

That would be a terrible reason to give them an easier time doing it.

There’s no point in just giving up and taking away people’s remaining chances to fight it, imo.

Angry_Maple,
@Angry_Maple@sh.itjust.works avatar

No, maybe not a US declared war. That being said, North Korea seems pretty happy to shout death threats at you guys.

If I was living in the US, I don’t think that I would want those guys to have any top-secret information that could effect the country I lived in.

One could definitely argue that exposing certain types information could be considered an attack on the US, because it’s not like bad actors would follow the US constitution to the letter. I’m going to go out on a limb, and say that anyone who buys that type of secretive information probably isn’t very US-friendly.

Spreading certain types of information could also cause massive security breaches. Anyone who is a protected witness would be at a massive risk. Who’s to say that a bad actor wouldn’t try to mess with your currency sytem, or expose a secret military location? People generally don’t like that stuff happening either, and for good reason imo.
