It's the Day of Helios / Sol's Day / ! ☀️

"Helios, the myth tells us [...] caused the water which had overflowed it [the island of Rhodes] to disappear. But the true explanation is that [...] the island was still like mud and soft, Helios dried up the larger part of its wetness and filled the land with living creatures."

On #NationalUnderwearDay I want to talk about the ancestor of the bra: the strophion!

In #GreekRomanArt the goddess #Aphrodite can sometimes be seen putting it on or taking it off but mortal women are depicted wearing it too.

It is uncertain what the Greek strophion looked like but the Roman adaptation, the strophium, was a breast band, a strip of cloth wrapped around the upper torso.

It was a normal but optional piece of feminine clothing.

@antiquidons @histodons #herstory #ancientRome

Roman erotic fresco from Pompeii depicting a couple seemingly about to have intercourse with her riding on top of him. She is wearing a strophium around her breasts and an arm band and anklet while he is fully nude, lying on his back in anticipation.

Here is a photo of a woman replicating the Roman Strophium, inspired by the Greek Apodesme. It was folded from a single piece of fabric, as in the figure of Aphrodite above.

I need advice from the techies on Mastodon:

I'm using Ghost's blog software for my website. The only integrated option for the native tool is .

Sadly, I don't have the know-how to run my own bulk mail server.

Do I best stick with Mailgun or do I go for option two, use a Czech-based alternative (Make) that integrates with a German-hosted newsletter service? Or a 3rd option?

AimeeMaroux,
@AimeeMaroux@mastodon.social avatar

@bedtimedrillsgt I don't like the idea of giving user data to a third party but I don't have the skill to set up self-hosted bulk mail.
My concern is with the data of my subscribers. EU data privacy laws are strict so that is why I'm considering the 2nd option of using EU based services instead of mailgun.

AimeeMaroux,
@AimeeMaroux@mastodon.social avatar

@thudfactor My hosting provider also recommended it but idk. I would prefer a self-hosted alternative so my subscribers' data always remains with me only. I feel like I'm not savvy enough to do that, though 😕

AimeeMaroux,
@AimeeMaroux@mastodon.social avatar

@bedtimedrillsgt It's not super sensitive data but still. I'm self-hosting Ghost, so I can set the outbound emails but it doesn't work for bulk mail. Ghost makes a distinction and only allows Mailgun for bulk mail.

Technology should exist for our convenience, not for the convenience of anyone who wants to interrupt us.
from by

This resonates deeply with me. I loathe constant phone buzzing or browser notifications. Sometimes it feels like we’re slaves to the technology instead of us being the boss.

FYI the is not aimed at the at all; my goal in reading it is to find -backed information that can help me understand and handle my distractions and maybe - just maybe - he’ll have some that will be useful for my brain.

For example, knowing that it takes 29 minutes to get back on track after distracting ourselves (vs 6 minutes when distracted by someone else) quantifies the consequences of distractions. Thinking that a distraction = losing half an hour feels much more tangible.

I'm always surprised when people say they read a 20-25,000 word story in an hour or something.

Like, sure, it's a short book, but I'd still read it over a couple of days unless I were really gripped.

I know I'm slower than most academics, but I have an Eng Lit degree. I don't think I read that slowly.

When I freelanced I could proofread around 5,000 words an hour (depending on complexity); I haven't timed myself outside that, tho.

Any other 'slow' readers out there? Tell me I'm not alone!

It's the Day of Hermes aka Mercurius Day aka ! 🐏

Meet this figurine of Hermes-Mercurius, holding his iconic kerykeion or caduceus staff in his left. With the two snakes winding around it, it has been mistaken for the Rod of Asklepios, the symbol of medicine, when in truth the caduceus is the symbol of commerce.

This week's theme is work.
Four deities spring to my mind when I think of work: , , , and . was an agricultural society with 80% of the population being involved in this line of work. In Greek mythology, it was Demeter who invented agriculture but according to Diodorus Siculus she burnt all the grain when her daughter vanished out of grief and anger.

@AimeeMaroux@mastodon.social avatar

While searching for , Demeter was received by Eleusinian prince and his family and after she had found Persephone, she taught him how to grow crops and provided him with a winged, serpent-drawn chariot to spread her gift across the earth. Triptolemus was the favourite of , and it is said that he became the inventor of the plough. Pausanias even tells of a temple of Triptolemos at .

Animal husbandry, a sign of power and wealth, was less well developed in #ancientGreece. Goats and sheep were the most common livestock and the flocks were protected (and sometimes stolen) by #Hermes. He cares for and increases the flocks and thus gives wealth.

Before Hermes was born, his brother #Apollon was herder of the flocks. When he was sentenced to a year of servitude as a young god for killing Python, Apollon served the mortal king Admetos as his herdsman.

3/🧵

@mythology @folklore

AimeeMaroux,
@AimeeMaroux@mastodon.social avatar

Fired with love for Admetos, #Apollon made all the cows bear twins. But then #Hermes was born and built the first lyre and Apollon traded his cattle whip for the instrument, making Hermes keeper of herds.

Hermes is also the god of trade and merchants, watching over the marketplace in the agora, a natural extension of his role since animals and their by-products were brought to the market to sell. Thievery and scams, of course, are also tools of the trade...

"As when a man adds gold to a silver vessel, a craftsman taught by Hephaistos and Athene to master his art through all its range, so that everything that he makes is beautiful."

Hephaistos and Athena seem to share most of the crafts. Only metalurgy and smithing seems to be Hephaistos' domain alone, just as weaving is the sole sphere of Athena.

Plato writes the two of them also share a workshop where they practise their favourite arts:

"He [Prometheus] entered by stealth into the common workshop of Athene and Hephaistos, in which they used to practise their favourite arts, and carried off Hephaistos' art of working by fire, and also the art of Athene, and gave them to man."
