The Three Graces are Aglaia (Beauty), Euphrosyne (Mirth), and Thalia (Abundance).

Here they are absolutely stunning in this C2nd CE example. This Roman piece is thought to be a reimagining of a Greek sculpture.

Remember that poll did where creators could vote for a variety of features?
At the bottom of the barrel were crypto currencies, still a hot topic at the time of the poll. was the only feature that received an overwhelming amount of "please don't" votes. No other feature even had double digits of "please don't". But guess what Patreon still offers anyway:

This is not news by any means, the poll ran last year. I just saw the screenshot again.

@jbenjamint To be fair, I think some just saw crypto as something important for the future at the time but the rest... well, I have no idea.

@kkarhan I have no illusions to the contrary. But it's funny how they basically pulled a BoatyMcBoatface.

@pluralistic The fact that their work is different is already the reason for the vast difference in base salary. If the company is successful, it's because of everyone involved, not just the CEO. Raising everyone's salary is only fair!

It's in the interests of predatory men to make us believe that younger women are more desirable than older ones purely because of their looks.

In fact, it's also about compliance. Younger women are less likely to tell awful men to go fuck themselves.

It takes time and experience to be able to stand up to terrible men. I still don't think I'm great at it, and I'm nearly 40. When I was 18? No fucking chance.

AimeeMaroux,
@AimeeMaroux@mastodon.social avatar

@girlonthenet Same. Nearly 40 and feeling like I could be better at telling awful men off.
It doesn't help that the narrative often is that it's the woman's fault for being hit on.

Aimee, I have a question for as you are clearly a subject matter expert here. I write scifi, but pull in historical elements or themes where I can.

My question is this: were the everyday Greeks/Romans of ancient times more accustomed to nudity or open lascivious activity than in modern times or was this simply what artists chose to depict?

TV/Film of the era (e.g., Spartacus) might lead one to believe it was XXX all the time.

AimeeMaroux,
@AimeeMaroux@mastodon.social avatar

@steaphan I think nudity was much more widespread than today for sure, there were even mixed public baths (though this varied greatly over time and from place to place).
If there was more sex, I cannot say, but as my Twitter friend LJ Trafford said "there was no telly" 😉
Something that we know for sure is that nudity and especially penises were depicted on everyday stuff like on the side of a house or at the fastfood joint or on protective amulets. Check out to get an idea!

Ladies, I have a horny man-god for you! Wait, "horned", a horned man-God - Gelas, from Sicily! Phew, that could have got awkward! (Ok @AimeeMaroux I know you can still do something inappropriate with Gelas!) This Æ Tetras harks all the way back to 420 - 405 BC, it amazes me that it is possible to hold something so old in your hands! More at: https://coinofnote.com/gela-ae-tetras-420-405-bc/

Original coin has: "Bull right, olive branch above, three pellets (mark of value = 1/4 litra) in exergue". On mine, basically only the bull is visible.

I do wonder how many people are staying on Twitter due to follower count alone. Having had an account for over a decade, I'd have previously estimated about 20% of my followers were dead accounts. Based on now leaving and making new accounts on other platforms, my estimate is closer to 90%.

As a blogger I've always known only like 1% of people who retweet/like a post actually clicked the link and read the article, but I assumed that was just a social media thing. Having experimented with basically every other platform, I learned it's more likely that a significant number of Twitter engagements are fake, and those that aren't don't really care enough to read your work, they'll just give you a retweet/like for appearances.

AimeeMaroux,
@AimeeMaroux@mastodon.social avatar

@malwaretech I am not active on Twitter any more but I did keep my account in small part because of the follower count, yes, even though engagement has been shit. But two more important reasons are the people who are still there and that I have yet to figure out if my tweet archive still works when I delete my tweets. I used a parser that supposedly downloaded everything in HTML and MD format but I dunno if it's easily searchable like the archive that still connects to Twitter 😕

men on reddit: “my girlfriend of 8 years recently revealed she bleeds from her vagina once a month. should I leave?”
women: “a guy I’ve known for 60 days says he’s a pedophile. how do I discuss this with him”

AimeeMaroux,
@AimeeMaroux@mastodon.social avatar

@rebeccawatson I know that nobody on the internet knows what a pedophile is but "would fuck a minor" ≠ "being primarily attracted to prepubescent children".
Come on, the post even outright states that he is not attracted to prepubescent traits.
It doesn't make the bf any less of a garbage person but there is no need to use the loaded label pedophile here because it is just wrong.

AimeeMaroux,
@AimeeMaroux@mastodon.social avatar

@rebeccawatson 🤷‍♀️ I didn't mention ephebophilia at all but whatever.

I'm not a troll if that is what you mean by that comment?

AimeeMaroux,
@AimeeMaroux@mastodon.social avatar

@rebeccawatson Oh yikes, I'm so sorry!
I did NOT nor did I mean to defend ephebophiles, I said it doesn't make him any less of a shitty person.

The way I understand the definition of the term, pedophile is explicitely a preference for prepubescent children. Is it wrong? In any case, my point wasn't supposed to be that the guy is not so bad or whatever because it's not pedophilia. It was supposed to be that it's awful in spite of it.

I apologise if I came off as catty or anything ❤️

Sabine Hossenfelder tried to use the story of penicillin to prove her thesis that capitalism leads to scientific progress. Here, I quote Ernst Chain, who won the Nobel Prize for his work on penicillin, to prove her wrong. https://skepchick.org/2023/09/sabine-is-wrong-again-capitalism-wouldve-killed-penicillin/

AimeeMaroux,
@AimeeMaroux@mastodon.social avatar

@rebeccawatson As someone who has worked in the pharmaceutical industry in her other life I find the notion to use drug development as a win for capitalism extremely bizarre. The profit motive is so harshly at odds with the nature of research, as you demonstrate in your article: low chances of success at the base level means nobody would invest in base research. And there are many rare diseases that aren't researched at all by the pharma industry because the resulting sales would be too small.
