soulifix,

For the most part, yes. But I have noted lately that I do get some snarky people coming in with dishonest and bad faith responses. They’re at least not as rampant as it would’ve been on Reddit. It’s discouraging and demoralizing when you’ve got, what feels like, 100 people downvoting you to hell and 50 of them are swiping at you before deleting their accounts and doing it again because they’re of the tribal mindset and you’ve somehow offended a part of the hive.

Gorbachof,
@Gorbachof@lemmy.world avatar

I get a lot of that from the .ml instance users

toasteecup,

I like sounds of the content from .ml but I safe quite a few of the users share a really toxic mindset.

It’s irksome because they are supposed to be leftists and promoting how good communism or socialism can be which seems really at odds with how they speak and act.

Skellybones,
@Skellybones@lemmy.world avatar

They feel Morley Justified to be rude.

It’s either your with them or against

toasteecup,

Yeah, reminds me of a post they did where the question is what issue do you have with leftism. I explained and got downvoted for it. I was even polite

wrenn,
@wrenn@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Yeah in the last week or so I’ve noticed an uptic in snark / downright rude responses compared to when I joined ~2 months ago

I hope the trend does not continue

Gnubyte,

😂 the classic reddit skitzo

ratboy,
@ratboy@lemm.ee avatar

I think I have noticed more crappy behavior as well over the past week or so that I’ve been more active, but I have tended to notice that not as many people feed the trolls as they would on reddit. Downvotes and people move on instead of engaging, it’s nice.

Zezzoz,
@Zezzoz@lemmy.world avatar

I just jumped from reddit and hope this is true. I can’t stand the toxicity there anymore.

mayo,
@mayo@lemmy.world avatar

Welcome! There are hot topics (I’ve noticed politics and inflation being spicy), but by and large great experience.

The smaller communities might be small, but they surprisingly don’t lack in engagement IME. Basically everyone is new so when a community has 10 members, those 10 members have probably been online this week checking their feeds and messages.

Zezzoz,
@Zezzoz@lemmy.world avatar

Thank you, you make me hopeful! I won’t lie, reddit is starring to affect my mental well being and I am not sure I am fully out of it. I have uninstalled the app so far and staying away from it, what I want is reading news and good conversations if they happen and less negativity as possible. Have you noticed an improvement in your relation with social media here?

Hyphlosion,
@Hyphlosion@donphan.social avatar

“I won’t lie”

Your honesty is greatly appreciated!

Drusas,

It's smaller than the others, so that may be a big part of why, but @politics on kbin.social is so far very polite.

mayo,
@mayo@lemmy.world avatar

I really want to try kbin.

masterofn001,

I’ve been somewhat active here since the blackout. It had been pretty rare to see downvotes unless someone is being exceptionally crude. Engagement is more organic. Tighter. It actually feels sort of like reddit did 15 years ago. Everything is new and shiny and buggy and beautiful.

Zezzoz,
@Zezzoz@lemmy.world avatar

This is really nice to hear.

Durpadurp,

I left because of the moronic double standards of many subs. Post something that is informative for the sub and the mods delete your post without reason. Yet constant low effort post about account recovery,is my console safe in this location and various other billshit stays. The Playstation sub is bad for that.

Coehl,
@Coehl@programming.dev avatar

Amen that was billshit

MossBear,

I think part of it is that it seems like Lemmy has older users on average than Reddit. For teenagers and young twenty years olds raised on the internet, they seem to not really know how to talk to people in a productive way, so it’s often just toxic, nasty or empty. Obviously this isn’t all people, but internet culture kids tend to all sound and act the same.

PenguinLover,
@PenguinLover@lemmy.ml avatar

As someone younger, I completely agree with you.

DSX,

Yeah some of the Reddit comment sections I’ve seen over the years have been full of people trying to instigate something.

PeleSpirit,

Most of those are trolls, not the youth.

MossBear,

There’s significant overlap there.

PeleSpirit,

I’m probably jaded because I hang out in lemmy.world politics but it really seems more like trolls. I have a hard time thinking that the gen z hang in there

MossBear,

Could be. I don’t really know for sure. Just speculating.

HelloHotel,
@HelloHotel@lemmy.world avatar

Its sad to see what the shape of the room can do to ones psyche, really the AI has taken over because it was handed what the walls look like on a silver platter and told to get to work.

MedicPigBabySaver,

Hogwash you son of a bitch! Now, take my upvote.

Rainmanslim,

Just wait till we get an influx of 4channers. You’ll see these “polite” people turn into hateful mongrels to drive them out of “their” platform.

messem10,

Hopefully they’d just make their own instance to which everyone else could defederate from.

b3nsn0w,
@b3nsn0w@pricefield.org avatar

luckily they seem to be contained for now on instances like burggit and lemmygrad because it’s “funny”

Lenins2ndCat,
@Lenins2ndCat@lemmy.world avatar

Lemmygrad aren’t from 4chan wtf are you talking about.

b3nsn0w,
@b3nsn0w@pricefield.org avatar

the instance admins likely aren’t and i doubt most users are either, i’m just saying the average 4chan user has an increased likelihood for joining an instance like that

Lenins2ndCat,
@Lenins2ndCat@lemmy.world avatar

The average 4chan user is a far right psychopath that hates communists and wants us all executed and it has been that way for over a decade. There is no left on that site. Leftypol is the communist version of an anonymous imageboard. leftypol.org/leftypol/

b3nsn0w,
@b3nsn0w@pricefield.org avatar

i’m always baffled by how the only people who hate far right authies more than the average person who has to live in their crosshair are far left authies. but that’s some interesting insight into 4chan, i didn’t know it was authies with specifically the right-aligned flags, they just scan the same to me.

so yeah, thanks for the info, good to know that 4chan trolls are expected to appear on burggit or exploding-heads, and that they don’t overlap with tankies much

Lenins2ndCat,
@Lenins2ndCat@lemmy.world avatar

Why don’t liberals “scan the same” to you? They are far bigger authoritarians than marxist-leninists. Is it just generally because the average liberal is politically checked out and you don’t come across the politically active ones because they hide themselves inside the status quo and hegemony better?

I personally don’t really vibe with either of the above for the record. My preferred space is Hexbear which is more of a loose left-coalition of MLs demsocs and anarchists than one ideology like the other two, which I’ll probably use my other accounts from when it federates. I’m not a fan of the sectarian spaces, sectarianism doesn’t help us build power when we’re powerless.

b3nsn0w,
@b3nsn0w@pricefield.org avatar

That’s a very interesting question, actually. Can you explain how liberals are authoritarians? Beyond the contradiction in the wording (which, I mean, the DPRK exists, wouldn’t be the first time something isn’t what it says on the tin, lol) it sounds like a super interesting topic. I actually can’t figure out why they should scan as authoritarians to me so I would appreciate your input there.

(Absolutely no sarcasm intended. I can’t seem to figure out how to phrase this better – I think it’s because from the context of the discussion there is an expectation that what I’m asking for elaboration on should be a trivial subject, but I’m no expert on this.)

Lenins2ndCat,
@Lenins2ndCat@lemmy.world avatar

Well the first thing to understand is that they’re statists, and all statists are authoritarians by default. Every state seeks to preserve itself and so every state will use authority when it is faced with potential destruction. This is not inherently a bad thing, it obviously depends on the government in question, and who is trying to destroy it, and why. Obviously I as a socialist defend the use of authority to protect the continued existence a socialist state. Liberals tend to always justify the use of authoritarian means used by whoever they support, and then they are intellectually dishonest and pretend that somehow their use of authority isn’t “authoritarian”.

Additionally, democracy itself is authoritarian. It is the means by which the democratic will of the people express its authority, by means of force. What happens if someone picks up a gun and tries to oppose the democratic consensus? Do you just sit by and let the democracy be destroyed? No, the democratic state uses its own authority to oppress the opposition.

There is no such thing as a distinction between “democracy” and “authoritarian”. It’s a meaningless buzzword. The opposite of a democracy is an autocracy or an oligarchy, not “authoritarian”. The use of this word in modern day political discourse is just something westerners fling at other people’s democracies they don’t like for daring to vote for something against US interests and want to see them blown up and millions killed and displaced.

I’m not sure if I need to get into the record of liberals on war. Both world wars, and the history of almost every war in the last hundred years not involving a socialist state. There’s also the question of the massive ideological mass murders liberals have carried out, but that’s a much bigger issue explored in things like The Jakarta Method, which I warn you is really really horrific reading.

girltwink,

I started posting on 4chan in 2005 😏 my favorite communities on reddit were little isolated bubbles of 4chan refugees. Mainstream reddit culture was pretty bad, and 4chan got overrun by maga weirdos in 2016. So far Lemmy seems like mostly the worst parts of reddit with a few of the good parts. It feels like the default subs, just slower.

Lenins2ndCat,
@Lenins2ndCat@lemmy.world avatar

4channers don’t get to call the culture of anything bad. 4chan culture was always bad and the far right were the vast majority of the site long before 2016.

    DanTilDawn,

    Corporate social media drives engagement using controversy. It is literally a machine that operates to piss people off. You don’t get that in the fediverse because there is no central interest puppeteering the outrage

    b3nsn0w,
    @b3nsn0w@pricefield.org avatar

    BADABAMM BADABAMM

    You are being watched. FAANG has a secret system. A machine that spies on you every hour of every day. I know, because… I built it. I designed the machine to detect spikes of dopamine but it sees everything. Violent emotions involving ordinary people. People like you. Emotions upper management considered irrelevant. They wouldn’t act so I decided I would. But I needed a partner. Someone without the spine to intervene. Hunted by privacy advocates, we work in secret. You’ll never find us. But lurker or contributor, if we can rile you up, we’ll find you.

    lemme_at_it,

    I recognise some of that, what was the name of that series again? - just so I can binge watch it again. It was relevant way before it’s time

    The only A.I series well before ChatGPT. What an epic one too. I binged the entire thing & will probably do so again now that you’ve reminded me, thanks

    @m3t00@lemmy.world avatar

    follow counts are a tw popularity contest. maybe others too? dunno. reddit made for interesting G results. didn’t spend much time there. here there is a pretty good chance your post will scroll by whoever is on now. past is past. quit wasting time archiving old posts for reuse. sucked the first time

    BonesOfTheMoon,

    I find everyone more open to discussion here and not snippy.

    I wonder if it was just that Reddit was really polarized by the The Donald segment of its population and what happened with that community, which don’t seem to have come over here, since that made things rather hostile on Reddit. Whatever we are politically here seems to be pretty quiet this far, other than agreeing the insane stuff Republicans are doing in the US.

    imPastaSyndrome,

    Well at least we have the circlejerk going for us

    Gatsby,

    We don’t have a circlejerk, here we play soggy biscuit. To the untrained eye I can see how it looks similar

    RGB3x3,

    The only difference is one tastes saltier.

    assassin_aragorn,

    Disagreement and acceptance of controversial but well thought out opinions is really good here. I’ve seen it sour a little over the last few days, but considering just how contentious the overall topics themselves were, that’s perhaps reasonable.

    What I can say with certainty however is that even those I have most vehemently disagreed with seem like good people at the end of the day. They aren’t bigoted trash nor do they delight in people’s suffering. If I had interacted with them in another space, I couldn’t have guessed we’d disagree so bitterly.

    It’s refreshing. On Reddit, the person/bot/shill would just consistently be awful. Here, I can have intense arguments with people about global issues but I can also see myself grabbing a casual beer with them afterwards.
