deweydecibel, in What's going on with Google's search engine?

Define “sudden”.

This has been a progressively worsening problem for a good while now.

To be fair to Google, it’s not entirely their fault, there’s a whole industry now that’s entire purpose is to fuck up the results. But even so, Google has absolutelly lost what made it useful. It’s far too concerned with try to curate for you instead of just doing damn search for the words. That helps them get more bullshit and some ads in there.

Chetanzi,

Can you explain a little what you mean by “a whole industry now that’s entire purpose is to fuck up the results”? I’ve never heard of that before and it sounds alarming to say the least

legalfinding,

I’m assuming they’re talking about SEO(search engine optimization). There’s companies that offer it as a service to boost websites rankings so they are closer to the top.

Hoxton,
@Hoxton@lemmy.world avatar

I’m guessing they meant SEO - Search Engine Optimisation. It’s much more complex than this, but essentially finding high volume search terms and writing website content based around those terms so your page shows up higher organically.

It’s why recipe pages or simple how to guides have paragraphs semi related text that sounds like it was written by committee. The content needs to be human readable, otherwise Google flags it as spammy, but at the same time it only serves to drive up clicks based on those search terms.

gonzo0815,

The worsening has definitely been progressive over the last 10 years, but I feel there were some sudden changes over the last couple of months that make it a lot less usable than before. For some searches I get the feeling that there’s some kind of whitelist of websites that are included in the search and a huge part of the internet is being excluded. I was looking for a pretty basic diagram some days ago, nothing too obscure, and there were maybe three dozens of results in the image search. I also find more and more pages that are obviously badly translated English content when I search for German terms. I never had that problem in the past. The same goes for product testing. I tried to find a good office chair, but the websites that claim to test different models obviously try to lead you to one specific product. The texts feel like auto-generated content to simulate real articles about the products being tested, but at the end chair X, and only chair X, is the right one to buy.

ultimate_question,

I disagree, Google has encouraged and profited massively off of SEO, they could’ve maintained the integrity of result but instead they bent over backwards to make sure SEO methods worked as long as folks were paying Google

Dettweiler42, in What's going on with Google's search engine?

It’s been progressively getting worse over the past few years as they’ve continued to “optimize” their search engine for more ad placement and sponsored content. I’d say these past few months, it’s become borderline unusable for finding actual information.

Cihta,
@Cihta@lemmy.world avatar

This is the thing. It really has become unusable. Trying to find obscure information is insane no matter the keywords. It’s always the same results and, ugh, YouTube videos. You can’t find parts for older stuff easily, simple answers are gone.

Amazon is similar. Change the keywords all you like you still will get the same ‘amazon choice’ products and recommended alternatives for whatever you searched for lead to the same list. But i have to agree it really got worse unreasonably fast last few months.

Are you accidentally using bing?

Or google without an adblocker when you are used to google with an adblocker?

PainInTheAES,

Bing actually isn’t bad these days.

As an Ohioan I hadn’t seen anything on Lemmy yet, but whenever the rest of the nation takes notice of us, it’s never for good reasons.

BarelyOriginal, in Why do YouTube usernames have @ in front of them now when you look at comments?

This change was added a number of years ago when youtube added (limited) hierarchical comment structures. When you reply to a comment, youtube automatically adds @USERNAME of the person you reply to. You can remove it, but it’s relatively useful if there are multiple replies within a reply structure

Menachem, in Why do YouTube usernames have @ in front of them now when you look at comments?

twitter. thats as deep as it goes. like how they try to get people to put hashtags in their titles despite no one using hashtags to find videos. corporations try not to turn everything into a homogeneous blob challenge: impossible.

it’s funny because they tried to do this push a few years ago too where everyone new had an @ and they eventually dropped it because it was dumb. i guess whichever exec thought that was a good idea never actually left

fubo, in Why do YouTube usernames have @ in front of them now when you look at comments?

YouTube comments were brought under Google+ shortly after that launched. After Google+ was cancelled, they may have adopted different appearances based on other websites’ usage.

BitingChaos, in OotL: What happened with Elon Musk? And Twitter?
@BitingChaos@lemmy.world avatar

I know this is an old post, but anyone that knows anything about Elon has known that he’s always been a big asshole.

It’s been nearly SIX YEARS since he started the weird name-calling online (calling someone a pedo). He’s only been ramping up the idiocy since, with it really going into overdrive during the pandemic.

The period from six years ago to three years ago he was mostly a meme. “What wacky shit will Elon post this time?” is what people thought. He became more common in the public’s eyes. It didn’t mean people actually liked him or that he was a cool dude.

He’s gone down hill more the past three years, and especially the last one year.

He posts stuff like “lock Fauci up” and conspiracies and other right-wing / Qanon shit. Giving a platform to right-wing / Qanon / nazi idiots. He’s destroying twitter, chasing away advertisers and normal people, and welcoming human garbage. Don’t you recall all the fuck Spez / reddit drama, where they kicked off 3rd-party apps? Elon did the same thing with Twitter.

BrudderAaron,
@BrudderAaron@lemmy.world avatar

Don’t forget about making twitter as user unfriendly as possible with anyone being able to buy verification and now putting a pathetically small limit on posts you can view per day. Also if you don’t have an account, good luck even going to the site because Elon does NOT want you to see posts without giving him the account creation data!

rustyfish, in Whats with the Lemmygrad hate?
@rustyfish@lemmy.world avatar

The problem with them is, they act like a cult. You might have heard that term in relation to Trump supporters and yes, they act and speak very similar. You have the same amouth of whataboutism, the same amouth of hypocracy, the same amouth of hate and the same amouth of dishonesty. I fucking hate the bOtH sIdEs argument and the enlightened center, but here we are.

A couple of weeks ago, a two year old post was brought up on Hot, because…idk Lemmy I guess. This happened all the time in the first weeks after the exodus. In this post OP called the “special operation” in Ukraine a powermove for marxism^1)^ and a all in all good thing. You might think “It has been two years by now, maybe they changed?”. No, I looked into the account and OP immediately made another post, linking his original post and creating a circle jerk for his fellow ghouls. Here you had people celebrating, that now they are the ones with the banhammer while in the same time crying about not having a conversation.

Afaik, they do this all the time. This post might be up there too. So I blocked every single community and every user I came across in the wild. There aren’t that many, so they are a very small but vocal minority. Nothing of value was lost. Nothing of valule will be lost in the future. Mom told me not to talk to crazy people. Fuck them.

^1)^ Oh, and if you think that an invasion of a sovereign nation by the worlds most corrupt Kleptocracy is a powermove for marxism, you can eat my socialist ass.

FluffyPotato, in Whats with the Lemmygrad hate?

I’m from Eastern Europe and if anyone here said Stalin was good actually they would get their ass kicked pretty fast. A lot of people have lost family to the soviet occupation here and people defending that monster aren’t really welcome. So yea, if I see posts praising Stalin in All I downvote them.

Lols, in Whats with the Lemmygrad hate?

lemmygrad is geared towards radical marxists supportive of china and/or russia

this means their users (and moderators) come from a far side of the political spectrum and are going to tend towards radicalism and extremism, and that their views tend to align with two hostile dictatorships notorious for their repeated disinterest in citizens rights or basic decency

all of which makes for a hotbed of toxicity with a modteam that doesnt particularly mind as long as its directed towards non-marxists
