How about some context?

GregorGizeh , in Who tf is Unity and why’s it become such a talking point?

From what I understand it is a popular game engine many developers have used in their games, and are still developing games with. This happened under a regular licensing agreement, which usually means a fixed sum or something tied to sales.

Now unity had the benighted idea to unilaterally add an additional charge to this, billing the developers for each and every installation of their game, which is not only incredibly greedy but also short sighted and ignorant of many common cases that would inflate those numbers (reinstallation for any reason being one of them).

Naturally developers affected by this are quite upset and are considering possible solutions to this self inflicted hostage situation.

dudinax , in What ever happened to the time Trump tried to get dirt on Clinton from a Russian spy?

It was Trump Jr and Paul Manafort, the Trump campaign manager.

Robert Mueller investigated the incident for the Justice dept. He concluded Jr. was to dumb to know what he was doing. This isn’t plausible because he had Manafort advising him.

They called someone during the meeting, probably Donnie Sr, but it hasn’t been proved.

Manafort was convicted on charges but I don’t think they were related to this incident.

Mueller obviously intended to never prosecute anyone in the Trump family.

jeffw , in What is JFKJr all about?

There was a conspiracy years ago that he was still alive and endorsed Trump or something like that. Or do you mean RFK Jr, who is running for president?

Edit: more info on the conspiracy if you’re thinking about JFK Jr: independent.co.uk/…/qanon-jfk-jr-alive-trump-b199…

They still think he’s coming back to run with Trump in ‘24

Something with the Mali government claiming back a domain and then Meta suing a hosting provider, if I could find the post where I saw it I would comment it here.

I actually just found it before seeing your comment: sh.itjust.works/post/1473025

Thats annoying, I heard about it in context of these military emails, didn’t think it would affect this.

Ads. Ads happened.

SamsonSeinfelder ,

Google needs to present growing profit for their shareholder. But ad revenue can only grow if you are alle to sell new ads. But there are not any new ideas for ads (like adWord etc) therefore they go down the road of „more ads“ to keep growing. What they needed was a new idea to offer another ad-concept that user liked and companies would pay for. But that did not happen. Goggle basically stopped innovating.

FaceDeer ,
@FaceDeer@kbin.social avatar

As I understand it the fundamental problem is that capital gains (via the increase of share value) is taxed less than income (via dividends). So shareholders want companies whose share values increase rather than companies that pay dividends, which is why there's the "need" for companies to always eternally grow.

If those taxes were more balanced then there'd be more of a niche for companies that get "big enough" and then just sit at that size steadily turning a nice profit year after year to give to their shareholders.

tonamel , in OotL: What happened with Elon Musk? And Twitter?

There was a popular tweet that went around for a bit, that said something along the lines of "When Musk started SpaceX and people called him a genius, I believed them because I don't know anything about how space programs work. When people said he was a genius for his work at Tesla, I believed them because I don't know anything about cars. Now he owns Twitter, and I know programming and the things he's doing are the dumbest things I've ever seen, which makes me think twice about his space program and cars."

Basically, he managed to get followers because he focused on niche technology and hey, he's rich so he must know what he's doing. But then he started saying things more and more publicly, culminating with the takeover and ruination of Twitter, and people finally saw him for who he actually is, because he was in control of something that affected them directly, and handling it terribly.

nave , in can someone explain skibidi toilet please?

I don’t know a lot of details it but it’s basically an animated series about skibidi toilets fighting the “cameramen”. It’s become extremely popular with generation alpha and younger children in general which is probably why it’s so nonsensical.

That’s really it. They’re just fucking weird, and dumb SFM shorts that, for whatever reason, took off. Source Filmmaker and GMOD videos have always been on the surreal and weird side, and this is just the latest line of new hit weirdshit soup.

Menachem , in Why do YouTube usernames have @ in front of them now when you look at comments?

twitter. thats as deep as it goes. like how they try to get people to put hashtags in their titles despite no one using hashtags to find videos. corporations try not to turn everything into a homogeneous blob challenge: impossible.

it’s funny because they tried to do this push a few years ago too where everyone new had an @ and they eventually dropped it because it was dumb. i guess whichever exec thought that was a good idea never actually left

Lols , in Whats with the Lemmygrad hate?

lemmygrad is geared towards radical marxists supportive of china and/or russia

this means their users (and moderators) come from a far side of the political spectrum and are going to tend towards radicalism and extremism, and that their views tend to align with two hostile dictatorships notorious for their repeated disinterest in citizens rights or basic decency

all of which makes for a hotbed of toxicity with a modteam that doesnt particularly mind as long as its directed towards non-marxists

LChitman , in Whats with the Lemmygrad hate?
@LChitman@kbin.social avatar

Some drama is just down to their politics (authoritarian Marxist Leninist in the main), and some relating to their moderation based on politics (bans for users posting articles critical of China, allegedly). You should be able to search and find recent treads, here is one I still had a tab open from yesterday:

https://kbin.social/m/[email protected]/t/171975/TIL-lemmy-ml-is-a-pro-authoritarian-CCP-shill-instance

Another part of this is people's concerns about whether their politics influences their development of Lemmy.

idontlikesand ,

What is most fascinating is they created something that respects the independence of each instance to rule themselves as they see fit regardless of whether they approve or disapprove of that instances beliefs and values, so it’s protected from even themselves. That alone shows the ideals of having respect for freedom and independence for any instance and that they support the idea of sovereignty for any that want it.

They are against authoritarian rules if going by the lemmy function with the ease with which individuals can leave instances and create new ones. If the concept of lemmy was applied to countries they would be against the idea of any invasions of sovereign countries, and respect each countries desire for independence and retaining their culture. Even the mechanism of defederation is a endorsement of keeping out invaders and they actively use it, and they’d be very vocal against countries that are invading or planning to invade saying it goes against the concept of the right for countries to rule themselves if they truly bought into the concept of what they created.

Lemmy as a tech is down right anti authoritarian with the power given to the people and built in foundation of ensuring the independence of each instance. Very ironic actually that certain historical figures that they worship would be incredibly against such a movement in real life that threatened their one party state and ease with which people could just leave and create their own nations if they disliked the rulers.

acquiescence , in OotL: What happened with Elon Musk? And Twitter?

Don’t have the source with me now, I’ll link it tomorrow if I remember, but there were people trapped in some underwater cave. Musk proposed a silly way to rescue, one of the members leading the rescue rejected his idea, and musk called him a pedophile in retaliation. His true colours showed from there.

He apparently had some sort of affair with Amber heard while she was still with Depp too.
