AlecSadler, in Why is everyone talking about Sync? How is it better than other apps for Lemmy like Connect and Jerboa?

Personally, I disliked Sync for Reddit and did not use it. And, personally some of those quirks still bother me with Sync for Lemmy.

But…Jerboa, Connect, Liftoff, etc. currently also don’t work as well or are as customizable as I’d like. Liftoff is definitely the closest, though, and I still switch back to it after each update to see how it is progressing.

For now though, Sync ticks more of my hot button boxes despite its flaws than any other app I’ve tried (so far).

fourohfour, in What is happening with the FMHY instance?

In short, the Mali government took back the domain apparently. It’s now running under lemmy.fmhy.net but it started from scratch.

The admins originally tried to set up a script to move all users and posts to the new domain, but it was taking too long and users voted to just start over. Admins have a post saying they will try to move some community / mod posts over, but all users and communities are a clean slate.

CeruleanRuin, in what's up with this whole "X" rebranding?
@CeruleanRuin@lemmy.one avatar

Part of me wonders if it’s an attempt to tank the SEO, so people can’t search for or news or easily talk about the site anymore - because it’s been nothing but bad.

emstuff, in What was the meaning of the heinz beans memes that was trending??

Hikermick, in OotL: What is with the Russian Wagner group.

Shit is about to hit the fan. The Wagner mercenary group has been far more successful in fighting the Ukrainians than the regular Russian army. Their leader Prigozhin has been complaining openly about the lack of ammunition and weapons from Russia and now he claims Russian military leaders have been calling in artillery strikes against his men. Now he says he’s headed to Moscow to kick their asses. He’s always been tight with Putin and isn’t threatening him but if reports are correct Putin is calling him a traitor and is siding with his generals. All of this is happening as Ukraine is poised to launch a counteroffensive. If all of what seems to happening is true and isn’t an elaborate distraction/disinformation scheme then it couldn’t happen at a worse time for Putin. Also worth noting is Prigozhin has been claiming Russian military brass mislead Putin into going to war by lying about the the threat Ukraine and NATO posed. There has been speculation for quite awhile that a weakened Putin could be vulnerable to an overthrow by the mercenary groups working for him such as Wagner. What this could mean for world political dynamics is anybody’s guess.

All of it?

Guy_Fieris_Hair, in OotL: What's the deal with people claiming Lemmy as a whole supports the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), dictatorships, denies genocides, etc?

A few days ago the Lemmy devs made an update here: join-lemmy.org/…/2023-06-17_-_Update_from_Lemmy_a…

In that update about half way through they aknowlage that everyone thinks they are tankies, deny it, and refer people to the about lemmy page here: join-lemmy.org/docs/…/07-history-of-lemmy.html

The about lemmy page they have some very strong political views that are anti-usa media. (Most of which, I as an American agree with) . None of this really answers your question, I’m sure there’s more to it I don’t know. But maybe provides some context.

I am tentatively here for the ride. 🤷‍♂️. They run lemmy.ml, and by design if I am not on lemmy.ml, they don’t have control over what I see, say, or do. They can have their own views, it does seem strange to put them at the forefront of the entire project though. And if they are the devs it seems they could push an update to nuke everything if they wanted. Idk what the context is to the whole thing.

Widget,

They're extremely pro-China. They deny the Uyghur genocide, by saying it's just as real as "white genocide". It's mostly criticisms that I would say are valid except that mixing in the Chinese propaganda kinda spoils the whole thing.

My expectation is that some people will just use it as an excuse because they actually enjoy Reddit turning into 9gag with NFTs. If it really becomes an issue, Lemmy will be forked, and new devs will lead it.

(There's also still kbin.)

ArugulaZ,
@ArugulaZ@kbin.social avatar

Guess I made the right move when I picked kbin. I don't need to find out that the NEXT social network I use is run by political extremist jagoffs.

Widget,

There's also not really any penalty for making extra accounts at different servers. I signed up for both kbin and lemmy.world before I settled on kbin.

azuth,

They don’t run the social network, they run part of it, lemmy.ml.

Which you actually are federated to in kbin.social just like I am at lemmy.world. Meaning you interact with their users and communities.

This is the whole point of fediverse, nobody exclusively runs it and gets to do whatever the fuck they want with it. They can do whatever they want on their part of the network but if it starts affecting other parts (instances like lemmy.world) they can just cut them off without losing any functionality.

I also expect many many more people contributing to the development of this project as it picks up users. It’s necessary, not for political reasons but because the original development team is actually pretty small.

Guy_Fieris_Hair,

They are the devs that program it all. If this blows up in a way they don’t like they could push an update that nukes the whole thing, no?

SYLOH,

It’s open source and not centrally run. So they can’t really “push an update” and even if they could, it would be quite easy to revert and continue development in a different direction.

sangle_of_flame,
@sangle_of_flame@lemmy.world avatar

instances aren’t forced to update, however

if the update nukes an instance, most instances probably just won’t update (and someone’s likely to fork the lemmy source code)

spirit,

On another topic, there are rumors circulating that we are fascists or supported genocide. These claims are completely false, and like most viral twitter threads, are coming from a single Mastodon user on a personal vendetta who didn’t provide any sources.

Well, they denied to be fascists or support genocide, without denying being “tankies”. I don’t know how they would respond to such claims, but I did found out that one of the developer did (or do?) hold “tankie” views. See lemmy.world/comment/311333 and lemmy.world/comment/329485 for more.

problembasedperson, in What is going on with beehaw... again?
@problembasedperson@lemmy.world avatar

lemmy.world is still on their blocked instances list, so you might be seeing data pre-defederation. The problem is that it seems you can interact with it but our instance will never be able to relay the content to beehaw (because we are blocked), so it’s like talking to a wall.

runswithjedi, in what's going on with bud light?

Yeah, that’s exactly what happened. A lot of hateful people liked Bud Light so when their favorite beer profused inclusivity, they started hating the beer too. I live in the Bible/light beer belt and Bud Light was the top choice of drink for lots of people. Now they hate it.

As for why the reaction has been so strong, LGBTQ+ rights have been a huge topic for conservatives lately. The greater acceptance of people in these groups has been used by conservative politicians and “news” organizations to stir up fear so they could get more votes/views. So when a company started marketing the acceptance that aligned with their campaigns/stories, they could say “see, we told everyone they were coming for you.”

cralder, in what's going on with bud light?
@cralder@lemmy.world avatar

They paid Dylan Mulvaney (a trans woman) for a sponsored instagram post and sent her a beer can with her face on it. Conservatives got mad because they are giant bigoted babies. That’s it.

CMGX78,
@CMGX78@lemmy.world avatar

This pretty much sums it up perfectly.

Lyrac,

I saw the pic and i guess i hoped there was more of a story. Conservatives seem to boycott stuff on a whim after an ad… I remember when my old boss stopped buying diet coke after a super bowl commercial (2017) because they supported “illegal immigration”. i looked it up afterward and it was a bunch of people singing “america the beautiful” in different languages.
