elscallr, in OotL: What's going on in Hollywood?
@elscallr@lemmy.world avatar

They’re striking. Collective bargaining negotiations broke down with the studios ostensibly negotiating in bad faith. It started with the Writer’s Guild, and then SAG jumped in after the studios basically told the WGA to go piss up a rope.

argentcorvid,
@argentcorvid@midwest.social avatar

One of the issues that was reported on about the SAG (actor’s union) strike was the studios trying to get actors to agree to be face scanned for CGI in exchangs for a one- time payment with no royalties or residuals and no other rights

Alenalda,

I’m behind the strikers 100% but it would be real nice to be able to collect royalties forever for the product of my labor.

murrrkle,

To be fair there’s product of your labor and then there’s your labor is literally your likeness. We gotta get ahead of AI regulation cause oh man it’s ripe for exploitation of likenesses

GaleFromCali,

Thanks, but what started these strikes in the first place? Was there a key event that started this whole thing?

TheFlopster,
@TheFlopster@lemmy.world avatar

I believe it was a regularly scheduled contract negotiation (because the previous contract was about to expire), and no agreement was reached for the terms of the new contract.

MKBandit,

Streaming doesn’t pay enough residuals. So companies just keep all the money instead of fairly paying the artists

100thCatMarch, in What the hell happened with vlemmy.net?
100thCatMarch avatar

It just disappeared. Common theory is the vlemmy admin found illegal content posted on his server and nuked the entire instance.

Something with the Mali government claiming back a domain and then Meta suing a hosting provider, if I could find the post where I saw it I would comment it here.

@RootBeerGuy@ttrpg.network avatar

I actually just found it before seeing your comment: sh.itjust.works/post/1473025

Thats annoying, I heard about it in context of these military emails, didn’t think it would affect this.

machin_shin, in Why is reddthat seemingly blocked by an "instance filter".

If you are using the connect app, this is because you blocked the reddthat instance. You can access your settings to see blocked instances/communities/users.

parachaye,
@parachaye@lemmy.world avatar

I checked again and you’re right! I was looking under the filters heading but there’s a separate block list heading.

I didn’t actively block reddthat but I accidentally setup an account name and deleted and replaced it…I think deleting the account might have added reddthat to the block list, maybe?

youthinkyouknowme,

Same happened with me. I blocked an instance without realizing. My guess is that it’s either a bug when block instance was being implemented or I just stumbled on the wrong option, since they are close to each other.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

This doesn’t seem to be an app setting

You might want to edit your original post to correct this, then.

byrona,

I wish there was a way to still see comments from those that you blocked, I don’t care about those. I just don’t want to see posts from blocked instances on my feed

machin_shin,

Agreed

Hi Connect dev here. That’s coming soon (or out now if you’re on the beta).

gamebuster, in What's going on with Google's search engine?

It’s because of money. Google is a place where you can find the least irrelevant ad for your search query.

djmarcone,

I wonder if their CIA money has dried up, maybe funds are tight and they’re forcing the algorithm for all it’s worth. Sorta like how spez is burning reddit to the ground trying to maximize the metrics for the ipo or whatever.

kemsat, in What's going on with Google's search engine?

I’ve mostly been using DuckDuckGo for the last few years so I haven’t noticed. I mostly only use Google for Google Translate & YouTube.

mariom,
@mariom@lemmy.world avatar

deepl is even better than gtranslate, IMHO

dannoffs,
@dannoffs@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I still mainly use deepl, but Google translate has made some impressive progress in the past few years and I’d say they’re pretty even now.

Spuddaccino, in Why is reddthat seemingly blocked by an "instance filter".

I ran into this just now.

I had blocked feddit.de, because I don’t speak German and didn’t want to see German posts in my feed. It turns out that it blocks comments from the instance as well, so I’m going to un-block it and go back to manually filtering communities as they pop up.

nodiet,

Does anyone know how language filters work? I know you can set a language for your post and you can set what languages to see posts in, but is there like an instance-wide default language setting? Or a community setting? This wouldn’t be a problem if german-speaking feddit communities were set to have German as the default language of their posts.

SleazyCommunist, in Whats with the Lemmygrad hate?
@SleazyCommunist@lemmy.world avatar

Same kind of humorless dolts who inhabit left spaces on reddit and are a uniquely a product of reddit’s culture of total conformity. Leftblr used to make fun of them all the time. Speaking from my own experience, I am a tankie, or at least most would accuse me of being such. But I didn’t pass the Lemmygrad purity test, and they blocked my registration because I said gender is fake and gay on my application (gay used as a pejorative). Not saying I didn’t or deserve a warning but yeesh context matters. Which is my personal experience, but if they are that way toward other communists, they are going to be way harder on perceived liberals so most people don’t like seeing their posts day to day.

skulblaka,

SleazyCommunist, (edited )
@SleazyCommunist@lemmy.world avatar

Tell me you have never interacted with a gay person without telling me you have never interacted with a gay person. I trust gay people to tell me when they are uncomfortable with my choice of phrasing, not faceless CIA agents behind a screen who can claim whatever identity suits them at the time. Sounds like you need to work on some of that ingrained homophobia, my lad, because that specific kind of labeling words of the gay community as bad is extremely common in TERF circles as well. Whole struggle sessions have been had over the word Lesbian as a pejorative, of which I assume you have no knowledge of. Drag queens express their sexuality by saying some of the vilest shit imaginable and they have done more for the LGBTQ community than a bunch MLs pretending they are the vanguard of the revolution because they misunderstood Democratic Centralism is an organization principle during a revolution not just for funsies.

I could quote Judith Butler’s Gender Trouble on the subject but I won’t since it is beyond the scope of this thread. However, with Don’t Say Gay being popularized with Desantis’s campaign, challenging liberal puritanism is a responsibility of anyone who considers themself left.

skulblaka,
@skulblaka@kbin.social avatar

It's funny you should say that, because in fact I have a gay sister who is extremely active in LGBTQ+ mental health as a licensed psychologist, a brother who is happily post-hrt trans, and am dating a trans male. No, I think you're just an asshole. :)

Most of the gays I know don't appreciate having their identity wielded as an insult. Sounds like you need to work on some of that ingrained homophobia.

sangle_of_flame,
@sangle_of_flame@lemmy.world avatar

are you LGBTQ though?

because if not, this take isn’t it; there’s a lot about LGBTQ communities that you’re not going to understand just by being around them or being related to them

ToastyWaffles,
@ToastyWaffles@lemmygrad.ml avatar

You’d be surprised by how much innate anti communist propaganda there is on the internet. You should judge lemmygrad by it’s actions, not what you heard someone else say about the instance without any proof to back it up. The developers of Lemmy made lemmygrad as a separate instance because they knew not everyone is ready to engage in left leaning political discourse to that level, and wanted to create a space where leftists can be without persecution across the fediverse. The entire point is to keep any “tankies” being tankies in that instance, and you have to seek out the instance to engage with it. Yet you find people in other instances frothing at the mouth about the evils of people debunking their false platitudes.

There’s plenty of people on lemmygrad I disagree with on leftist politics/information but it’s a very reasonable community. If you actually provide your sources and proof and don’t convey it in a negative or condescending manner, they will engage with it fairly. I’ve never seen as many sources cited as in lemmygrad.

I think modern capitalist social media has just conditioned everyone to be incredibly vitriolic and hate people for “what” they are and not for anything beyond a label, and when liberal westerners come onto a site where they have to engage people who will call them out on their hypocrisy, they freak out. It’s also especially hard for these people to admit their hypocrisy cause so much of it is based in false information that is spread as cultural facts in the west, and have been since at least the red scare, so they don’t even identify it as propaganda.

There is definitely some pro CPC propaganda and apologists in Lemmygrad, but I can guarantee there is a lot more unjustified hate and propaganda against the CPC and all the good things they’ve done, in other spaces like Reddit and other Lemmy instances.

deweydecibel, in What's going on with Google's search engine?

Define “sudden”.

This has been a progressively worsening problem for a good while now.

To be fair to Google, it’s not entirely their fault, there’s a whole industry now that’s entire purpose is to fuck up the results. But even so, Google has absolutelly lost what made it useful. It’s far too concerned with try to curate for you instead of just doing damn search for the words. That helps them get more bullshit and some ads in there.

Chetanzi,

Can you explain a little what you mean by “a whole industry now that’s entire purpose is to fuck up the results”? I’ve never heard of that before and it sounds alarming to say the least

legalfinding,

I’m assuming they’re talking about SEO(search engine optimization). There’s companies that offer it as a service to boost websites rankings so they are closer to the top.

Hoxton,
@Hoxton@lemmy.world avatar

I’m guessing they meant SEO - Search Engine Optimisation. It’s much more complex than this, but essentially finding high volume search terms and writing website content based around those terms so your page shows up higher organically.

It’s why recipe pages or simple how to guides have paragraphs semi related text that sounds like it was written by committee. The content needs to be human readable, otherwise Google flags it as spammy, but at the same time it only serves to drive up clicks based on those search terms.

gonzo0815,

The worsening has definitely been progressive over the last 10 years, but I feel there were some sudden changes over the last couple of months that make it a lot less usable than before. For some searches I get the feeling that there’s some kind of whitelist of websites that are included in the search and a huge part of the internet is being excluded. I was looking for a pretty basic diagram some days ago, nothing too obscure, and there were maybe three dozens of results in the image search. I also find more and more pages that are obviously badly translated English content when I search for German terms. I never had that problem in the past. The same goes for product testing. I tried to find a good office chair, but the websites that claim to test different models obviously try to lead you to one specific product. The texts feel like auto-generated content to simulate real articles about the products being tested, but at the end chair X, and only chair X, is the right one to buy.

ultimate_question,

To be fair to Google, it’s not entirely their fault, there’s a whole industry now that’s entire purpose is to fuck up the results

I disagree, Google has encouraged and profited massively off of SEO, they could’ve maintained the integrity of result but instead they bent over backwards to make sure SEO methods worked as long as folks were paying Google

Jackolantern, in What's going on with Google's search engine?

I’ve read somewhere that the Reddit debacle has something to do with it.
