anthoniix, in Why do people prefer cars over public transport?

Speaking from a US standpoint, the public transit sucks. The main issue where I’m at is lack of bus stops, and the bus is never on time. I’d have to walk down a highway (not interstate) to get to the bus stop, then it might not even arrive on time.

Cars are faster, most of the time. However, they still suck. Traffic in dense areas is heavy at almost all times of day where anyone is active. It’s really a failure on the US government why people dont take public transit as much.

conderoga, in Why do people prefer cars over public transport?

In the US, the state of public transit outside of a handful of (very expensive) cities is significantly slower and less reliable than taking a car. I would pin the reason for this on the shift of people outside of urban areas into suburban ones, and the lobbying power of the automotive industry to convince the government and citizens alike that cars were the right choice.

If public transit is the fastest option in the area, people do choose to take it! That’s the case for me too in the past couple of cities I’ve lived in. But most cities have a long way to go before they get there.

Aside from just talking about this from a convenience angle, a message that might help explain the issues with car dependency is how much more it costs! People that are more hesitant about public services might be easier to convince with a cost-based argument. This is a great video explaining the actual cost of car ownership.

Kuma, in Why do people prefer cars over public transport?
@Kuma@lemmy.world avatar

I think most covered it all why they use a car.

I just want to add that it all depends on where you live. I don’t know what you mean by “most”. I would say most in cities with good bike lanes like Paris and Amsterdam would say most take the bike, or cities with great public transport like Tokyo would say most take public transport. If you live in a place like USA where it is dangerous to walk and the public transport is almost none existing then most would take the car. I think New York has ok public transport. But I don’t know, when I was there were sandy coming in so all of the subways were closed off.

Saltycracker, in Why does it feel like we're at a point where every social media + other digital media are making shitty decisions and falling apart?

Interest rates went up and investors aren’t able to get cheap money. So investment is drying up. A few banks collapsed. Tech companies are trying to make a profitable business. Instead of a zombie company

Lol on a serious note though, if it takes too much of your time, you might want to consider some additional activities for spending your time :) your mental health is much more important than Lemmy ^

dustojnikhummer, in Why does it feel like we're at a point where every social media + other digital media are making shitty decisions and falling apart?

Because most services we are using aren’t sustainable. They all bleed money.

gpl,

That’s by design, isn’t it? Dominate the market while operating at a loss then monetize once you have attained monopoly. Like Uber’s strategy. This is an awful way of conducting a business IMHO, it falsifies the economy. I honestly believe they should put severe regulations on this.

dragontamer,

Ish.

It is a strategy that works when interest rates are 0%, and the 2008 recession was so bad that the IS Fed kept interest rates low until 2021.

Redo the math at 5% interest rates today and 13 years of $1 Billion investment needs to make $1.8 billion just to break even. Money losing strategies are nerfed in this new meta.

lpslucasps, in Why does it feel like we're at a point where every social media + other digital media are making shitty decisions and falling apart?

Because capitalism, that’s why.

The lie that eternal growth is possible has companies making really stupid moves to increase short term gains at the cost of long term stability.

copymyjalopy, in Why do people prefer cars over public transport?

There is a substantial YouTube library of breakdowns on why we (usually North Americans) continually choose cars.

TeaOfMisery, in Why do people keep voting for authoritarian leaders?
@TeaOfMisery@lemmy.world avatar

In Hungary, one big reason is that the government has all the media coverage, and they basically created a false narrative that if Orbán loses, then a) the previous government will come back and no matter how bad things are right now, it will be WORSE, b) migrants will come and wreak havock, c) our sons will have to go to war (in the last election, the opposition lost a lot of votes because there was a billboard campaign stating that the new PM candidate would send soldiers to Ukraine), d) there will be some kind of woke dictatorship.

People also think that the bad quality of life is mostly the fault of the EU and the previous government (which was in power over a decade ago…), and that it’s okay that Orbán and his party steals from them because at least they’re “on their side”.

The government also provides some help to parents, which people find valuable, so they keep voting for FIDESZ.

what is ravioli? And, is ravioli a dumpling?

macarthur_park,

David Chang argues that ravioli are dumplings on .

I’m inclined to agree in that dumplings and ravioli are the same general idea implemented by different culinary traditions.

kadu, in What does the term "Troll" or "Trolling" actually mean on social media sites like Reddit and Lemmy?
@kadu@lemmy.world avatar

A troll is someone not using the platform in good faith, but instead trying to fish some type of negative reaction or result.

On a social media platform like Lemmy, a troll could be someone creating fights, baiting people with insults or fabrications, spreading misinformation purposely, adding links to content that might dangerous or illegal, and so on.

In short, a troll is someone engaging with others with the goal of ruining their experience. In a videogame it could be a team member losing on purpose to annoy others, for example.

PreciousDeclaration,
@PreciousDeclaration@lemmy.world avatar

Thank you so much for your detailed explanation.

wreel,
@wreel@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

A little Internet history: the etymology of “troll” in the Internet sense comes from the fishing term “trolling” which is where one moves around the fishing area with bait waiting for fish to hit (or bite). In the old bulletin board days a normal response before engaging with an obviously inflammatory/bad faith post was to start “ok, I’ll bite … [Counter Argument]”

PreciousDeclaration,
@PreciousDeclaration@lemmy.world avatar

That’s really interesting. Thanks for telling me that.
