Sakychu, in Valheim Sailing Mechanics

Just like in real life you should know about how to sail against the wind aka tacking: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tacking_(sailing)

saloe,

Oh I know about tacking and do that as much as I can, but still find it curious that the wind is always the exact opposite of my intended course lol

CaptSoulBeard,

Extra play time

Sakychu,

Ah gotcha!

SaltyIceteaMaker,

You put me into a rabbit hole to wich I can’t find the answer… that being what are the physics behind tacking

Sakychu,

I am not entirely sure about the English names for the parts of a boat but I try my best: the Boat always tries moves towards where the bow is pointed because of the keel below the ship which acts like a guide rail because it creates a path of less resistance. And the hull makes it very hard to much it left and right. So even though the wind comes from a 45° the shape translates that in mostly forward movement and a little bit of sideways movement. Like a toy car you are stepping on: you are acting as a downwards force but the wheels translate it to forward movement. I hope that somewhat gives you a bit more insight!

BLK241,

Good explanation. Another way to think about it is with modern sails and hull design it’s more like a wing. The sail above the water is the more obvious wing shape, and with some designs that use a centerboard or daggerboard that is like the other half of a wing turned on its side. With water having more drag than air, the centerboard is the continued wing shape under the water only shorter.

SaltyIceteaMaker,

That actually made me understand it fully. thanks!

Actually from what I remember from a reddit thread a while back, someone did the math and rowing against wind seems to be faster on average in valheim in any case except if you're in the storm or sth like that. It feels slower cuz its a boring slow line but it ends up being faster

saloe, in Valheim Sailing Mechanics

Some further evidence from playing just now. My friend was sailing the ship and the wind was at our backs, he had to take a phone call so I took over and the moment I sat down the wind abruptly spun around 180 degrees and is blowing in my face. Aaaaaaaaaa

Kiosade,

Yep, i’m pretty sure they programmed it that way on purpose just to make one of the powers you get later seem more useful.

… however after many hours in the game I started just using mod commands to make the wind go whatever direction I wanted, just like in Windwaker.

Goblin_Mode,

just to make one of the powers you get later seem more useful

I want moder power to be useful so fucking bad dude. Last time I played I tried living on a little island that I terraformed into a small fort that rises out of the water, my only way to come or go with ore was by boat and I STILL never used it.

Despite being in literally the most optimal use case for having it that power just feels so lack luster. It would be wayyyyy better if it was just like a passive effect that made RNG better or half cool down or something. As it is I’d rather just use bonemass or Deer since they are more universally applicable

If there isn’t one, I think that’s a good idea for a website. If anyone is willing to take up the mantle. 😀

Shizu,
@Shizu@lemmy.world avatar

I was just about to say that. I’ll look into creating my own Service for that then. I’m planning on doing that for

  1. Games
  2. TV Series
  3. Movies
  4. Anime

All in one service

ghost03080,

Add music as well and I’m in lol

Shizu,
@Shizu@lemmy.world avatar

I’ll definitely look into it. If there is any database I can hook an API to, then I’ll definitely add that, too. So 5. Music

Game: Tempest Rising

Niggling__Niggard,

Thanks, it’s incomprehensible how OP didn’t even manage to mention it in either the title or the blurb up above. Is he a bot or something?

Broken_Monitor,

Its not a surprise either, these guys have put out a couple preview trailers and have been promoting the game for like a year now. Looks cool, been on my wish list for awhile

Blizzard,

And why does he keep calling it “Steam RTS”? Kind of suggests it was developed by Valve.

  • Blizzard,

Yeah, I get what you mean.

    commandar,

    It's SEO-optimization nonsense.

    DrQuint,

Specially weird given that there was a whole thing with Neon Prime MAYBE having RTS elements. Someone might confuse themselves crossing those wires. This title just sucks.

It's modern enough but old school. I had barely sampled C&C back in the day (this game, I'm told, is a lot like C&C3), but I played a ton of StarCraft, and the mission they gave on the show floor was definitely great for showing off the unit escalation and rock paper scissors of it all. If you're looking for another one of those, there's a good chance they nailed it. For me, however, I think I'd like to see a different take on the genre, at least for multiplayer. The fog of war would instill a sense of dread in me that no amount of scouting could ever alleviate, and while winning a game of an RTS is super empowering, losing felt so awful that I'm not sure I want to do it again. They're seemingly not changing anything drastic and just making another one of those, which is fine, because there aren't a lot of those. I'm much less interested in playing games with a mouse these days, but somehow this game has full controller support listed on the store page. I know AOE2 got updated with clever controller options, but like I said; they're not rocking the boat with this game, so it's surprising that they somehow have controller inputs working. When I played the demo, it was on a mouse and keyboard.

I'm also not familiar enough with C&C to know what this game is doing different from C&C. But a lot of old designs aren't broken and could just use modernization. Look at the last few games Mimimi has made, modernizing Commandos and Desperados. At this point, I'm desperate for "boomer shooters" to catch up to the 00s in design, because no one really makes FPS games like that anymore. A friend of mine was playing some TimeSplitters: Future Perfect on Discord, and I never played those games in their heyday, but I would absolutely be into them. There just aren't games made like that anymore, and I miss them. This game could be that for RTS or C&C fans.

Side note. There are allegedly TimeSplitters and Perfect Dark games on the way. I fully expect Perfect Dark's campaign to not resemble that first game at all and for its multiplayer to be a live service extraction shooter, because that's what these big companies think people want. To be clear, this is based on nothing but feelings, conjecture, and cynicism, and I'm usually not very cynical. And if TimeSplitters ever does come back like they say it is, I expect it to be exactly what I want because they can't afford to build the thing that's going to ruin Perfect Dark.

As for BG3, the way Larian makes those games systems driven, such that you can say, "I wonder if this works" and it usually does, is doing more than just playing on nostalgia, and it is doing things that video games excel at, even if it's still doing things outlined in the tabletop game.

Looks interesting. It basically looks like a new C&C, which is a good thing. Apparently they have opened up playtesting according to my Steam, so let’s see how things are going

DarkThoughts, in New Steam RTS is basically a surprise Command and Conquer sequel

I'm not super interested in classic RTS anymore, thanks to 4X, but I'll keep an eye out for it and try the playtest. I still have my doubts that it will capture the same charm as the original C&C though. Especially someone like Kane will be hard to replace, and I feel he was such a big face for NOD that drove the whole story & mysteries forward.

Thanks, that’s a very interesting triva. Also reminded me to finally play Ion Fury I’ve bought so long ago. I’m even more interested in the game now

nugget359, in If the same game is available and on sale on GOG and Steam, on which platform you rather buy it?

Steam but mainly because I have a steam deck so ease of use.

wesker, in If the same game is available and on sale on GOG and Steam, on which platform you rather buy it?
    @wesker@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Steam, but only because 95% of my library is on there. However, I think often GOG is probably the better choice.

    JokeDeity,

This. I love GoG for what they do and their whole ethos, but I have damn near my entire collection already on Steam and like to condense as much as I can as hard as that may be. Steam is still by and far the best launcher, but every year GoG Galaxy gets a little bit closer to being an actual contender; literally all the rest are absolutely terrible dumpster fires.

Why is that by the way? On my PC I have Amazon, Battle.net, EA, Epic, GoG Galaxy 2.0, Itchio, Rockstar, and Uplay clients (along with some individual game launchers) and not a single one comes close to being as feature rich, streamlined, and just clearly built for the customer/player as Steam is. I know Valve has a lot more experience under their belt but it feels like the others aren’t even trying. Most of them are just in your face about their store fronts and barely function as a library after the fact.

    worfamerryman,

Steam as it’s more straightforward to running it on Linux.

I bought cyberpunk on gog and it’s just a bit more work to get it installed and running.

If possible, I’d exchange it for a steam copy.

ghostworm24, in If the same game is available and on sale on GOG and Steam, on which platform you rather buy it?

GOG for DRM-free, unless there is a benefit to Steam. For example, Spelunky gets a daily challenge only on Steam.

BitSound, in If the same game is available and on sale on GOG and Steam, on which platform you rather buy it?

I also go GOG first. I like the whole DRM-free aspect.

Dagnet, in If the same game is available and on sale on GOG and Steam, on which platform you rather buy it?

GOG. I like actually owning the games I buy

    foggenbooty,

Yup. Steam is my go-to because of easy game steaming, steam deck integration, etc. But I know what I’m sacrificing for that convenience. Luckily Valve is an incredibly customer focused company and I have a huge amount of (well deserved IMO) faith in. GOG however is definitely still the best way to own your games.
