Why is this thread full of carbrained douchebags rationalizing their planet-killers?

FarceOfWill,

I think Lemmy has so little car culture they’re desperately searching for anyone talking about cars and think this is a good place.

Or they’re actual car fuckers who are deeply confused in many ways

Someone should start a “Fuck Cars Sensually” community, it could be for car fans shitposting things.

rikonium,

I’m a car dork, I also sub here for all the reasons this place exists but I’m assuming I’m lumped in with the “car-brained douchebags”. This is a misinformed take by OP picking on one of the “less-bad” pickup body-style vehicles one could pick because it… shares bits with a minivan? That’s the point of it - While it straddles the segments a bit with almost full-size width and mid-size length, it’s still going to net superior fuel economy (comparable the Odyssey too) than pretty most any gas-only crew cab, short bed pickup and he’s picking on it because it’s not “as useful” but that means more weight, using more fuel, etc.

It brings car benefits to a pickup shape and I much rather this exist than another full-size pickup with a chest-high pedestrian-wacker hood line or trying to convince a pickup buyer that they ackshually want a minivan because good ol’ American ego already struggles enough with accepting a unibody pickup. (cue truck-bro “NOT A TRUCK” and “LOL PILOT WITH BED” comments)

they also can’t be lifted as much (as easily) due to their suspension design so you might appreciate that too

M0oP0o, (edited )
@M0oP0o@mander.xyz avatar

My take is that these stupid new trucks are crap and developing in the wrong direction (also this one looks like a shopping cart, but that is subjective). If this is the “less-bad” pick up then there is no pick up worth buying (hey that might be a whole point as well).

I don’t hate this because it shares anything with the minivan, I hate this because it is worse then the minivan and is trying to fill a place in the market that used to be cool. Stop buying stupid giant truck like things. This is not good on gas (20% worse then the Odyssey), not small, still has a “a chest-high pedestrian-wacker hood line” and sticking up for these things just encourages more of them.

rikonium,

It’s not new, offering a more car-like pickup is “wrong direction”? I don’t even understand how you think it looks like a shopping cart. The Ridgeline has been around since 2005 and between then and now has gotten longer by 4ish inches. The F-150 crew cab shot bed got 7ish inches longer in that time. (And you know what, I even lament the growth of minivans too since the 90’s!)

www.fuelly.com/car/honda/ridgelinewww.fuelly.com/car/honda/odyssey

You’ll find here that real-life fuel economy is darn close - nowhere near 20% worse despite expected ratings. If you go look up the curb weights they won’t be that different either. They even share an engine. I understand the whole minivan “just use a tarp”, blah blah but this thing is similar in size (five inches longer) and I personally understand that there are use cases where an open, easy-to-clean cargo area can be a plus or something that won’t bottom out as much on a dirt track. (e.g. no trash removal, I’ve cut my weather stripping and scratched plastic trim in my crossover shoving in cut down 7’x3.75ish plywood, etc.)

Your post states: “This thing can’t be useful as a truck” - how so? Neither towing nor payload are poor. It can average MPG outside of the teens which is tough for it’s V6 classmates to hit on Fuelly. Plenty of pickup owners don’t tow or off-road much. I don’t think you mean to say that it’s “better” from a Fuck Cars perspective that buyers purchase a less efficient but more “useful as a truck” pickup?

“can’t seat as many as a van” - And? Does that mean a gas-guzzling 15-passenger Express van is the ideal Fuck Cars choice? (Obviously not)

Honestly you picked the wrong thing to clown here as an example of what’s wrong with pickups. A fraction of an MPG, five inches of length, identical width versus literally any full-size or the larger HD pickups.

Pick how tall trucks are getting, the (relative) lack of lift regulation, crash compatibility, pedestrian safety, the risk posed by wheel spacers (if you remember that Kia Soul being sent flying), headlight aiming - especially when towing or hauling, etc.

(But tbh I would prefer the Odyssey/Pilot/Passport/Ridgeline to be a couple inches narrower but that’s just me.)

M0oP0o,
@M0oP0o@mander.xyz avatar

I don’t know why you are thinking I like or support the f150 or a (urgh) “crossover” and don’t think it has the same issues. All new trucks are terrible and this does not make this good no matter how you compare. I want more truck like cars not car like trucks. I am sick of being gaslit about fuel economy, size and performance.

As far as “useful as a truck goes” its a 5ish foot bed, if you are talking about anything other then a kei truck then its another stupid useless truck that people will just keep excusing and rationalizing themselves into.

“We’ll just put roundabouts instead of stop lights, it’s how Europe does it.”

FarFarAway, (edited )

Serious question though.

How do people deal with exiting these roundbaouts in Europe?

Nobody in america uses them (edit in: turn signals) when exiting and im stuck there waiting for a spot to clear, or until someone decides to let me know theyre exiting. It doesnt help theyre the smallest roundabouts they could possibly make. Everyone behind me gets mad, but just entering is like playing a game of chicken.

Do people in europe have the same issue, and they’ve just learned to time it better / have more space between entrances and exits, or are people more courteous, and use their damn turn signals.?

Sheeple,
@Sheeple@lemmy.world avatar

We use our god damn turn signals.

What kinda neanderthal wouldn’t???

FarFarAway,

Thank you! I knew there was something we were missing here.

AngryCommieKender,

BMW and Audi drivers on this side of the pond. Hell, I almost walked in front of some sort of massive SUV last night because the fucker turned left, while blowing a stop sign, with no turn signal.

eendjes,
@eendjes@feddit.nl avatar

You just exit them? It’s the people getting onto a roundabout that have to wait.

FarFarAway,

Right, but do you use your turn signal to exit, or do you just exit?

Sry just realized it sounded like no one exits. Haha opps.

funkless_eck,

when driving on the left (eg UK), if you’re making an exit on the left side of the roundabout, you signal left and get in the left lane, if you’re going straight you don’t signal and can get in either lane, if you’re going right you signal right and get in the right lane, then signal left to exit

reverse for driving on the right (eg USA)

AngryCommieKender,

Do roundabouts flow both clockwise and counter clockwise in the UK? They only flow counter clockwise here, so you’d always exit to the right. The left lane is the inner most lane, and hence there’s nowhere to exit to. Unless you are one of the frequent rednecks that just go straight across in your massive truck/SUV.

funkless_eck,

perhaps I should have specified, my example was for left-driving traffic which travels clockwise in the UK. in the US its right driving traffic traveling widdershins on roundabouts.

assuming you approach the roundabout from the south, heading north, and you’re driving on the left, traffic travelling clockwise on the roundabout. the first exit (west) would be “left”, the second exit (north) would be straight on, the third exit (east) would be right, and the fourth exit (south) would be essentially a u-turn

as you approach, intending to turn east (left) you signal left, if youre intending to turn west (right) you’d signal right. Once you’re on the roundabout, if turning east (left) you’re already signaling left so you exit left, but turning west (which was right as you approached the roundabout but is now left from your POV) as you approach your exit you signal left to exit.

AngryCommieKender,

Ahh, I see what you mean now. I was thinking relative to the car as the absolute point, not relative to the interchange. Gotcha.

Sharkwellington,

Think of it as just the same as exiting and entering like you would on the highway. When nobody’s coming you’re good to enter and when your exit comes up you leave. Not sure I would necessarily signal entering but signaling the exit helps other people know what you’re about to do.

BenadrylChunderHatch,

You should always signal to exit a roundabout after you pass the exit before the one you want to take. If you want to take the first exit, signal before you enter the roundabout. If you want to take the second exit, signal after you pass the first exit etc.

If you’re taking an exit more than 180 degrees around the circle from the entrance, you should signal the other direction to show that you are staying on the roundabout and then signal to leave after you pass the exit before the one you want. E.g. if you’re in a country where you drive on the right and the roundabout is on a traditional crossroad ‘+’ and you want to take the third (left) or fourth (u turn) exit then you should indicate left to start with and then indicate right to exit.

Note that this is what you should do. You will see drivers not signalling correctly in any country with roundabouts. The most common error is probably not indicating at all when going straight.

HydraulicMonkey,

You should start indicating as you pass the exit before your exit.

AngryCommieKender,

Keldoran, I wish! If they even use signals over here, it’s as they are making the maneuver.

Isoprenoid,

People should be signalling before they leave, but I’ll give you a tip from a country that uses roundabouts.

Look at the front wheels. Where are the front wheels pointing?

The front wheels will tell you where they are going quicker and more often than people’s turn signals (which are unreliable).

FarFarAway,

Awesome! Thank you! What a great idea. I will try this next time.

HydraulicMonkey,

I’ll give you a better tip for all traffic interactions; look at the driver not the car. You can see where they are looking and what they plan to do in almost all situations. You can even see if they aren’t looking and have no plan.

Nugget,

At least roundabouts are significantly safer than stop lights!

CeruleanRuin,

Roundabouts are actually safer and generally better for traffic flow.

    Redfugee,

Yes, but not enforced by GPS.

    pachrist,

For the trucks in the picture, the speed is limited by the manufacturer.

I really hate these trucks. Not for all the genuine reasons that everyone else does. I have a 1995 Geo Tracker. It might have 60 horsepower on a good day. It’s perfect for everything I need it for. Low horsepower vehicles are awesome. Buying a 700hp truck that’s limited at the ECU to 100mph, but you only drive it on 45mph roads, is such a waste. It’s like buying a million dollar house and sleeping in the garage.

Bring back 80hp bulletproof tiny trucks.

yA3xAKQMbq, in cycling in Italian cities

Not Italian, but am there frequently and have lots of friends there:

Naturally, it depends on where you are. Some places are frequented by tourists with mobile homes, and those have a higher amount of “casual riders”.

But generally speaking, Italy is… let’s say not really bike friendly…

For example: At Lake Como, the SS 36 runs along its Eastern Coast. SS stands for “Strada Statale” which is the Italian name for highway, a road where only cars are allowed.

But! At some points the SS36 is the only road since Lake Como is sitting next to mountains, and they only dug a tunnel for the highway. This in turn leads to these parts being demoted from an SS to a regular road, meaning other modes of transport are allowed.

Which of course means you’ll find people on road bikes, without any lights, riding in an old and badly illuminated tunnel with cars zooming past them at ~130 km/h 🤡

    freebee,

Had the opposite experience unfortunately. Tunnels on the ligurian coast are single direction, that switches with a timetable. Just 50 km/h or so, but bikes not allowed. Oh, sure, I’ll just pedal my bike over this 9km detour over a 350 meter high mountain pass instead 🤡

Marzanna, in How the heck did we get here? Most best selling "cars" are now superzied pickups and SUVs.

I think that compact SUV is an optimal car. It is not too big (sized like a normal car), it doesn’t consume too much fuel, you can drive to the countryside (with light offroad) and it has enough space for some load and passengers feel comfortable. It can have AWD but I think that differential block is more important than AWD.

    TopRamenBinLaden,

Hatchbacks and wagons are cool for similar reasons, but they are barely a thing over here, sadly. At least we got a couple offerings from VW I guess.

    bennieandthez,
    @bennieandthez@lemmygrad.ml avatar

There is no such thing as an optimal car, there are less wasteful cars. 99% of the time it will only transport a single person.

chiliedogg, in How the heck did we get here? Most best selling "cars" are now superzied pickups and SUVs.

With today’s prices and interest, it’s a terrible time to buy a car.

But trucks are often needed for work, so even though the timing sucks, so their sales have remained solid.

I live less then 5 miles from work, but both cycling and public transportation are not optional due to the shitty design of the roads and shitty drivers.

To cycle, if have to cross a light where the highway just becomes a city street, so people are doing 65+ in a 40 and often run the light. I’m honestly hesitant even in my car.

To take public transportation, I’d have to cross that same intersection, then cross a bridge over the river, with no sidewalk, and the same bat outta hell drivers. I’ve seen a single car wreck on this bridge where the car was on its roof. Then it would be an hour long bus ride filled with transfers to get ten minutes by vehicle away.

All this to say, I feel this message. I’d love to drive less, because I really don’t enjoy it. Unfortunately, the reality of my area doesn’t really make this possible.

over_clox, (edited ) in this is all

Nice. I have to travel like 17 miles to the nearest bus station. This fixes everything! /s

Better off with my own vehicle when it’s only like 8 miles to work. I’d be literally wasting 9 miles to the bus station and 9 miles back in my own vehicle to even get back and forth to the bus station.

Edit: Seriously, have any of you tried traveling 17 miles to the west, only to catch a bus going 25 miles to the east, passing your own town to get to work? Then going 25 miles back, only to have to drive your own vehicle back home, because the bus don’t stop there?

Better off just taking my own vehicle to work.

Infrastructure and non transit orieted developmental problem. the place you live was likely built with only the car in mind.

    over_clox,

The area I live in actually used to have its own bus station within walking distance from my place. Until 2009 when they totally shut it down, for basically no good reason.

They nickname our town Ghost Town ever since then. We’re even a bicycle friendly community, but not a single bicycle shop in town anymore either. Ever since 2011 we bicyclists gotta travel at least 8 miles to get tires and tubes.

    over_clox,

Please make sure to read my other comment, our town was once developed with mass transit in mind. We even have our own railroad tracks, also within walking distance.

But God forbid the citizens get to use such things, too much industrial transportation on the tracks.

    ZC3rr0r,

Sounds a lot like my town. This place used to have a train station and regular trains to major cities, and now it’s used only for freight and they turned the old station into a railway museum. It’s absurd.

    over_clox,

Dang, you folks have a railway museum?

Closest we got is to ask the nearest homeless dude where the parked antique trains are… ☹️
