Rogers, in [image] I can't wait to see more trucks replaced with bikes

Definitely not practical and not designed for the person that uses it. Great way for companies like Amazon to save a buck while making life harder for the people that get paid the least.

  • Hardly any protection from the elements
  • no place to put a drink or anything
  • have you ever been on a bicycle seat all day?
  • not safe if your on a road with cars/trucks

Maybe it would work for a college campus or something, but small electric box trucks would be far better for the person doing the work.

arin,

Imagine a bike road without cars and trucks.

Fried_out_Kombi, in [meme] How to reframe car-dependent zoning into terms that so-called Freedom-Loving Patriots™ can (hopefully) understand
@Fried_out_Kombi@lemmy.world avatar

Note that this meme is meant to make fun of NIMBYs who spread conspiracy theories about 15-minute cities being some evil communist plot to take away their freedom. The irony being that they often support the sorts of laws — restrictive zoning, parking minimums, Euclidean zoning, etc. — that essentially mandate car-dependent suburban sprawl.

9point6,

Funny thing is, given the choice this lot would happily take a tower block in their back garden over someone taking their god given right to drive a chunk of metal around at 70mph

NIMBYism isn’t consistent, it’s just one aspect of a gamut of selfishness

MentallyExhausted,

Yeah, they don’t care about freedom, they care about having their personal preferences prioritized. All of conservatism can be summed up with selfishness or fear.

HobbitFoot, in Texan Local Advocates Put Couches and Potted Plants in Parking Spots

I know a lot of restaurants wanted to keep renting parking spots as it was a cheap way to increase restaurant space.

Brunbrun6766,
@Brunbrun6766@lemmy.world avatar

Lots of restaurants especially seafood that have a “deck” area that’s just built out into the parking spaces

RagingHungryPanda,

I read of a group who rented out a parking lot to turn in to a temporary park b/c it was cheaper than renting land from the city, and they also wanted to demonstrate that parking was too cheap or a bad land use or something. It worked double the benefit for them

IWantToFuckSpez, (edited ) in Buying medicine late at night in a car dependent city

What is the solution then? The problem is probably more that there aren’t enough pharmacists to run 24/7 pharmacies within walking distance of everyone in a city.

Also even cities with great public transport infrastructure have a spotty night schedule or don’t even have one at all. Like even in Tokyo you can get stranded if you miss the last bus/train and then you have to wait till the morning or call a taxi

This situation would have happened in any city , walkable or not, unless you live near a pharmacy that is open at night.

souperk,
@souperk@reddthat.com avatar

I could rant for ages about the state of public health in my country, but this is not the community for that.

There are a lot of things to be improved on the area of public transportation.

The night routes are not enough, it’s not like the buses are empty. Also, if the metro operated during the night this would have been a 15min trip. Remember autopilot is a thing, night routes shouldn’t be an issue for metro lines.

The bike infrastructure is non existent, a good bike path would make the time to get there about the same as driving a car.

Last but not least, the problem still stands and escalating an issue as simple as picking up a medicine increases the burden on the already overloaded health services.

isolatedscotch,

Remember autopilot is a thing, night routes shouldn’t be an issue for metro lines.

piloting isn’t the issue, it’s the cost of running a metro line when (almost) noone uses it

cowpowered, in Can’t believe the car would do this all by itself

News outlets like the BBC try (in my experience most of the time, but not always) to avoid implying something without some evidence or source. The driver was probably at fault, but it could have been a mechanical failure, a panicky swerve to avoid a dog running into the road, etc. Without knowing more they report passively, which I feel is appropriate.

Nouveau_Burnswick,

it could have been a mechanical failure

So the owner (who is probably the driver)'s fault.

a panicky swerve to avoid a dog running into the road, etc.

So the driver’s fault.

Without knowing more they report passively, which I feel is appropriate.

But yes, this remains correct even if the driver is at fault, someone must assign that fault, and that’s not BBC’s job. Could passive voice the driver in there too though.

oh hey everyone! Look at the beautifully crafted reply. Isn’t that just great how this person adds to the conversation in a meaningful way?

FireRetardant,

On the note of mechanical faults, it is odd that cars are typically safetied when sold/transfered to a new owner and never really required to be inspected again. Regular safety inspections should be a mandatory part of car ownership.

cowpowered,

Mandatory periodic (typically annual/biannual) safety inspections are fairly common: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_inspection

ch00f,

We had them when I was a kid in Virginia. My shitty Corolla failed because the driver-side door handle didn’t work on the inside.

They wanted $150 to fix it, so I just tied a rope to the mechanism inside the door. It passed.

All-told, it’s a great idea and also provides some business for local mechanics.

donnachaidh,

It is in the UK. You have to get an annual MOT check, I believe. I’ve also found it odd that that isn’t required where I am either, though.

How do you view the alttext on mobile?

AceBonobo,

On Firefox, long press the image. If the alt text is long then you also have to press the text to expand it.

thehatfox,
@thehatfox@lemmy.world avatar

XKCD has a mobile website, just change the URL to m.xkcd.com and it shows the alt text at the bottom

Here’s a mobile link for the comic.

Looks like I’m one of today’s lucky 10,000

SnipingNinja,

Most mobile browsers show alt text when you long press the image, sometimes you have to tap on the alt text if it’s longer than a few words (same as mentioned by the Firefox comment)

Also, in sync for lemmy the xkcd comics load as an image but the overflow menu contains extra details including alt text.

Yes, I am aware you can be tracked via other means e.g. triangulation and some such. Still, I turn off as much as I can. I try to get as little privacy invasion as possible.

neurospice,

A lot of people claim that this is a ‘feature’ and welcome google into their lives. Obviously some don’t know the full extent of it all, but remember there’s people who willingly broadcast their location to the world via snapchat. Scary stuff

NixDev, in ask patrick

I work for an auto company. I can tell you they don’t want mass transit because it hurts profits. They would much rather jack up the cost of vehicles, offer deals on leases, and keep people locked into getting a new vehicle every few years. Just keep the machine running and fuck anything except their profits. You will see how shady the auto industry is once the strike happens next week
