Ulrich_the_Old, in ‘No foundation in any law’: ‘Sovereign citizen’ questions B.C. traffic stop

There has never been a case where a person claimed to be a sovereign citizen and it went their way. Not even once. It makes one wonder why they even bother. How can a person be so utterly wrong about how things work and still manage to function.

TSG_Asmodeus,

It makes one wonder why they even bother.

Because they’re acting on their feelings, not facts.

corsicanguppy,

and those feelings are feelings of selfishness.

nocturne213, in Here's why Canadian non-binary youth avoid team sports, according to a B.C. study

Here is the why:

It found that 66 per cent of non-binary youth who avoided joining a team sport did so because they would have to play on a men’s or women’s team.

The study also found that 80 per cent avoided sports because of locker room layouts. Half of the non-binary youth who don’t participate in sports cited teammates and coaches as the reason.

We all have the right to go topless here in Ontario. Not so in BC?

TSG_Asmodeus,
@TSG_Asmodeus@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t think that matters, she shows the clothes she was wearing and it’s just standard summer fare. Why are we even talking about what she was wearing though, who cares. Shirt? Check. Shoes? Check. Service? Lacking.

Still, I am curious. Hope that is okay?

BCsven,

Topless is OK in BC. we have nude beaches if anyone feels like having less than topless

jerkface,
@jerkface@lemmy.ca avatar

Ontario has nude beaches also, but I think they are more tolerated than permitted. Gwen Jacobs won our right to go topless here in the 90s. I was always so fucking impressed. She allowed herself to be arrested and then used it to change the system.

BCsven,

I remember that, I was living in Ontario at that time.

phoenixz,

Where could one find those beaches? We love nude beaches in other countries but I wasn’t aware Vancouver had them.

BCsven,

Wreck Beach in Vancouver is the renowned one. www.wreckbeach.orgThere are other smaller ones around ,for example crescentrockbeach.caWhat used to be a very chill nudist scene has now had some issues with fully dressed male losers with cell phones out creeping. Typically they will get challenged by the other male beach members, but it just ruins what used to be a nice natural hangout.

If I recall correctly, BC was the first province to legalize toplessness.

ininewcrow,
@ininewcrow@lemmy.ca avatar

Or how about putting strict regulations on all plastics to the point where the economy only produces three or four types of interchangeable plastics that are compatible with one recycler, manufacturer or processor to another. Make them so similar with one another that they can be harvested after use regularly, recycled and reused over and over again.

Polendri,

I’ve thought the same about containers in general (plastic, glass, metal): standardize sizes and sell goods in reusable containers. Buy your Oreos in a standard reusable container same as any other cookie, eat em, bring it back to the store for a deposit. Companies will hate the reduced branding potential of a cardboard sleeve around a standardized container, but… tough.

ininewcrow,
@ininewcrow@lemmy.ca avatar

Yeah I thought the same … I keep buying the same peanut butter brand with the same clear hardened plastic container all the time. After a few years, my entire garage shop is now filled with clear plastic containers with lids that I use for anything and everything. They come in great for holding nails and screws and small parts but also for managing all kinds of liquids and oils.

If they did the same for all containers, people would be using all this stuff over and over again before trashing them.

dexx4d,

Reduce, reuse, recycle is an order of operations. Reusing is better than recycling, but reduction of consumption is best.

healthetank, in B.C. man billed more than $100K to cover cost of fighting 2019 wildfire | CBC News

Interesting case. I would agree that if someone started a fire out of negligence (ie unattended fire), then they should be held liable in some way for the damage done, especially given the significant problems we’ve had in Canada the last few years with wildfires, and the likelihood that we will continue to experience these problems.

I guess it really boils down to where the line is for negligence, and it seems like the courts have ruled he should have done more to ensure it was under control and fully extinguished before leaving and not returning to site. To be honest, him not realizing that fires can go underground seems kinda dumb to me, considering he was burning brush from his land. Fire is an enormous danger -if you don’t know how to do large, controlled burns over extended periods of time, consult firefighters first and/or the local government so at least your ass is covered and you can say “I did what the experts told me to do.”

MrPhibb,
@MrPhibb@reddthat.com avatar

Notable to me in the article was that it sounds like he didn’t even stir the fire to check that it was out, instead just assuming that lack of flames or smoke meant it was out.

phx,

There are a lot of places outside of city limits that still engage in burns like this -filling the countryside with smoke - and whatever they say they’re doing there’s plenty of times I’ve gone past and nobody is really watching the fire closely but rather everyone is puttering around doing their regular shit. It’s absolutely careless in the face of the rising danger and number of fires were seeing yearly.

Sucks to the one who gets made into an example, but maybe a few more cases like this will have little thinking twice.

Rodeo,

I live out in the country and I do this and I see people doing this … But not during dry times when there’s risk. People pile the brush up but nobody burns anything until there’s been at least a couple days of rain. Most people just wait until the spring. Then you burn a perimeter around the fire, and you really don’t need to stand there watching it.

frostbiker, in Vancouver Island landfill ordered to remove and destroy 'triggering' Halloween sign

Even if it was done intentionally in bad taste, which I can’t imagine it was, ordering its removal is going too far IMO. It’s okay to have poor taste.

I’m queer and this summer we saw some people burning rainbow flags. I don’t like what they did, but I wouldn’t want it to be forbidden either.

paysrenttobirds,

Know your enemies? I kind of agree with you, but this was not a matter of police action or government orders, as I understand it the company itself decided it wasn’t funny. I think I have a right to put funny signs in my yard, but if a neighbor asked me to take it down I wouldn’t think they were overstepping either, what’s appropriate is supposed to be negotiated between people.

frostbiker,

Know your enemies?

Certainly that, but also I’m in favor of erring in the side of letting people make their own decisions and mistakes, as long as they don’t affect others excessively. It’s not black and white, we all have different ideas of where to draw the line.

what’s appropriate is supposed to be negotiated between people

Completely agreed. I’m just sharing my opinion, which is not any more valuable than any other.

teuast,

Your opinion is fair. Mine is that because as far as I can tell the government wasn’t involved, I support this action. It just seems like the kinder thing to do, to me.

SkepticalButOpenMinded, in 100 Cops, Not Even 10 Nurses | The Tyee

Especially ridiculous since police funding is not strongly correlated with crime reduction. Sure, they may help in super crowded areas like during a parade, but police don’t generally stop crimes from happening. You call them after the crime has occurred.

What is strongly correlated with lower crime is good social services, safety nets, economic equality, etc. Which is why crime in Canada is so much lower than in the US.

SamuelRJankis,

I feel like funding is strongly correlated with this:
