Opinions: What is a movie you genuinely like, that is rated below 60% on rotten tomatoes?

Inspired by the linked XKCD. Using 60% instead of 50% because that’s an easy filter to apply on rottentomatoes.

I’ll go first: I think “Sherlock Holmes: A game of Shadows” was awesome, from the plot to the characters ,and especially how they used screen-play to highlight how Sherlocks head works in these absurd ways.

CustodialTeapot,

Final Fantasy: the spirits within.

The animation felt way ahead of its time. It’s been over a decade since I watched it, but I have very fond and exciting memories of watching it.

hugegreenburger,

I rewatched it not long ago. The animation is still great, the plot… not so much.

Absolutely worth the upgrade to Blu-Ray in any case.

CoderKat,

I can’t remember anything about that movie except thinking it looked good. Did it have a plot? I don’t even know.

Amadan,

Jumper is on 15% critics and 44%. Definitely a dumb movie that could’ve been much better but I thought it was a cool scifi movie. Plus I’ve always liked teleportation powers and powers in general being used for something other than being a superhero.

Avn128,

I still enjoy this movie

sirivanleo,

Same

scops,

I didn’t care for it because I thought a more faithful adaptation of the book would have been more entertaining. I might have enjoyed it more if I came into it cold.

On a similar note, I was shocked when I saw Push had a 24/42% on RT. I thought it had really fun super power feats outside of an existing comic book IP. Bonus points for pre-Cap Chris Evans.

Aesthesiaphilia,

I was shocked when I saw Push had a 24/42% on RT.

What the absolute bullshit

I gotta stop reading this thread, it's making me angry/disappointed

moeggz,

It’s a legitimate fantastic movie. Never understood the hate.

tetris11,
@tetris11@lemmy.ml avatar

The actors.

Blackmist,

Street Fighter has 11%.

It’s glorious. It’s a comedy that only Raul Julia is in on. Everyone else playing it dead serious, but a super hammy scenery chewing villain, with some genuinely great lines.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDRnVPlRzag

It’s what modern movies are missing. Especially the recent MCU fare. Jonathan Majors and Josh Brolin may well be great actors, but they’re not great villains. They’re a better fit for mumbling their way through a 3 hour Chris Nolan epic.

Think Tim Curry or Alan Rickman in practically anything they were ever in. The earlier movies had this spark with Jeff Bridges and Tom Hiddleston, but they’ve lost it now. These things live and die by their choice of villain. They are after all the reason for the movie to exist.

OhNoMoreLemmy,

"For you, the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday. "

grue,

This comment makes me think of Marc Alaimo (the actor who played Gul Dukat).

OhFudgeBars,

Dude, Where’s My Car, 17%/47%. I haven’t seen it since it was in the theatre, but I remember thinking it was a good disengage-your-brain comedy that got some chuckles and had a plot that was weird enough to be a joke on it’s own. What were people expecting, with a title like that?

CoderKat,

How are cult classics like that scored so low by audience score? Critiques I can understand cause being elitist is like their whole schtick. But audiences at least have self selection to filter to people who like the idea in the first place.

Incidentally, I always felt that films need two kinds of ratings. One for people who view the movie as “their kind of movie” and one for people who don’t. Because it’s completely meaningless to me if, say, my grandma doesn’t like the new Marvel movie. That’s not her thing. I wanna know what people who like other Marvel movies think!

emeralddawn45,

Yeah I guess rotten tomatoes is going the way of imdb. For a while both were really reliable but then seemed to hit a critical mass of people who either just want to complain about everything, or on the other hand can’t look beyond their adoration of certain celebrities or ideas to see the flaws in something. It’s time for a new movie rating site that won’t attract the lowest common denominator for a few years yet.

MBM,

One for people who view the movie as “their kind of movie” and one for people who don’t.

You can look for specific reviewers who tend to like the same kinds of movies as you, then see what they think. Or, look at the reviews instead of the score. I tend to look at an average review, a positive review and a negative review, to see if I care about any of the bad parts they bring up.

TimewornTraveler,

and then?

Terminator Salvation.

It did not deserve the hate it got, and could have a been a great reboot for the series.

I thought they pulled off the “early future war” aspect pretty well. Conner is still young and not the brilliant general as he would be in 2029, the machines are still recovering from the nuclear exchange so their reach and power is limited as compared to the lines of tanks we see in the opening of T2, and the technology, feel, and atmosphere feels realistic and fresh.

I wanted to see more in the universe, but people whined that it wasn’t a masterpiece like T2, and there was no Arnold, so instead we got the flaming dogshit that was Genysis and whatever the newest one is called.

_cerpin_taxt_,

Right? I genuinely loved that movie and really wanted to see that era of the Terminator franchise expanded on. It’s the only good Terminator sequel outside of 2 that’s worth watching. T1, T2, and Salvation are the Terminator trilogy in my book.

WhoRoger,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

Have you seen The Sarah Connor Chronicles?

_cerpin_taxt_,

No, but I’ve heard great things! How many seasons is it?

WhoRoger,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

Two, the second being twice as long so worth 3 together. Mind you it ends of a cliffhanger, because it’s a good sci-fi show from the 00’s, so of course it does. But it’s still one of my favourite things of all time. I get a bit teary and want to watch it again every time I think about it.

(I hope I’m not overhyping it too much. It has silly bits in it too, but most of the time it just fits what I want from a TV show.)

WhoRoger,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

After seeing The Sarah Connor Chronicles, it’s really hard to watch any Terminator movie beyond the first two. The show has… Well, shown that there’s still good potential in the franchise that a 2-hour movie simply can’t do justice anymore.

ComradeSalad,
@ComradeSalad@lemmygrad.ml avatar

Yeah, but that’s still pre-judgement day. TSCC was a wonderful show and I loved it, but I’ve had enough pre-judgement day terminator material.

I want to see the future war. Either early future war (2005-2020) or the closing days of the war 2028-2029).I want to see Humanity’s War with SkyNet. I want to see the violent struggle between Conner and the machines. I want to see the machines rearm, field new technology, and grow more powerful in the face of a desperate last stand human resistance that is barely struggling to stay alive. I want to see the machines themselves grow more and more desperate, genocidal, and destructive as Conner’s leadership grows from a thorn in SkyNet’s side to a threat that is posed to exterminate the machines, to ultimately a fighting force that puts Skynet in a desperate defense before being ultimately overrun and destroyed as Conner leads the final offensive against its brain in the Cheyenne Mountain NORAD base.

That’s what I want to see.

I don’t want to see Arnold or Sarah Conner for the 15th time running around trying to prevent Judgement Day and surviving against time traveling assassins.

WhoRoger,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

Well the whole 3rd season of TSCC was supposed to be mainly post-JD. And while it’s actually not personally my cup of tea, it’s this show’s creators who I would trust to give this theme justice (day). So of course the dipshit suits cancelled it.

Redtitwhore,

I’m with you. I wish the ending was much better but otherwise it’s a solid Sci-fi movie.

exocortex,

I’m with you. I liked it too. It was essentially. war movie.

Just one thing: The last Terminator movie was actually OK.

wjrii, (edited )
@wjrii@kbin.social avatar

Jupiter Ascending was a bit of a mess, but overall I liked it. I would contrast with Valerian, which is also a mess, and which I came close to liking, but in the end I just couldn't sell myself on it. The rest of the movie channels its influences and feels like 5th Element meets Star Wars, but DeHaan and Delavigne spend the whole movie acting like they're in a high school production of Blade Runner.

EDIT TO ADD MY OTHER COMMENT: Conversely, for all the bee gloop and DNA dynasty and flying rollerblades and other extremely weird shit that was sort of half-assedly put together in Jupiter Ascending, Tatum and Kunis had me more invested.

hereticpilgrim,

I first watched Valerian a couple weeks ago and really enjoyed it. The plot and characters were fairly generic, but the rest of the movie played by the rule of cool.

wjrii,
@wjrii@kbin.social avatar

That's fair. For a "popcorn" movie, I just really need to enjoy spending time with the leads, and it just didn't click for me with Valerian. Conversely, for all the bee gloop and DNA dynasty and flying rollerblades and other extremely weird shit that was sort of half-assedly put together in Jupiter Ascending, Tatum and Kunis had me more invested.

ohlaph,

The ideas of that movie were interesting enough to keep my attention, but the acting was distracting.

wjrii,
@wjrii@kbin.social avatar

LOL, did you mean Valerian or JA?

I will certainly say that the space station "tone poem" opening sequence bought Valerian a lot of goodwill with me... that it slowly whittled down over its runtime.

nile,

Yep

SCB,

Jupiter Ascending is a mess of a movie but it is a great ride start to finish and I will die on that hill.

It’s pulpy Sci Fi from the late 80s just played completely straight, and I loved it.

SkepticalRobot,

Speed Racer

Ocelot,

this movie is quite the visual experience. nothing else like it

cz8c,

Still salty it has never gotten a 4K Blu-ray. If any movie needs HDR it’s speed racer.

leavemealone,

This movie is a good trip.

MimicJar,

National Treasure is 46% and it’s sequel is 36% for critics. Audiences like both more and if a third film in the trilogy is ever made I’m in.

yenahmik,

What?! How is National Treasure so low?

generalsockpuppet,

The Cable Guy

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

I laughed so much during this movie. Absolutely an actual funny movie if you can relate to the situation. :)

boredtortoise,

Who wouldn’t relate to a lonely manic stalker- no wait

Ben Stiller had a perfect director’s streak with Cable Guy, Zoolander and Tropic Thunder

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

Ever had people in your life that refuse to leave you alone? They call, they come by, they get involved in discussions… It’s so frustrating and this movie made that funny. :)

boredtortoise,

Darn I thought my joke was obvious

kryptonicus,

I don’t think mrmanager missed your sarcasm. I think they were saying that they enjoyed the movie precisely because it took such an awkward and unpleasant premise and managed to make it funny.

I agree with you both. Damn it was dark, but holy crap was it funny.

That scene at Medieval Times when Carrey does that great rendition of the fight music from Star Trek. “Come hither, so that I may brain thee!”

DudePluto,

That scene at Medieval Times when Carrey does that great rendition of the fight music from Star Trek.

It’s always been interesting to me how relevant movies from the 90s and early 2000s make Star Trek seem at that time. Cable Guy and Wayne’s World both come to mind as movies that make multiple, occasionally obscure Trek references. I was born in 96 and watch a fair amount of Trek but it just doesn’t feel as relevant in my generation :/

wildcardology,

I never visit the site to see what other people an critics think of a movie.

Ktheone,

Same, rotten tomatoes nowadays is full of paid critics and anti sjws who raid audience reviews whenever their favourite chud reviewer shits on a movie. Id rather form my own opinion, thanks.

squoop,

Anti-SJWs should be called SIWs.

danekrae,

Bicentennial Man (1999) starring Robin Williams. It’s one of my favorites.

leavemealone,

Probably the best Asimov adaptation on screen.

Jeaper,

Now its probably not a hill Im willing to die on, but:

The Mummy (2017)
15% Tomatometer, 35% Audience score

I just had a good time, what can I say

Piers,

Sherlock Holmes: A game of Shadows

AFAIK the intention was to build a franchise and now Robert Downey Jr has finished with Marvel they’re all keen to pick it back up again (he’s also pushing for Jonny Depp to join the franchise.)

Adderbox76,

Josie and the Pussycats.

It was so far ahead of its time that critics just didn’t get it because the world they were satirizing was still about a decade away. (Instagram, fame, product placement, fanboyism…)

Also, bonus answer. The Big Hit. Because fuck it. Lou Diamond Phillips knew exactly what kind of shclock movie he was in and chewed the scenery fantastically.

GrayBackgroundMusic,

The Big Hit.

WhiteTiger,
@WhiteTiger@lemmy.world avatar

As someone who grew up on Archie comics, that movie NAILED the casting (except for the Cabots, who weren’t really in the film much anyway).

Adderbox76,

Alexandra is responsible for the line in the movie that most cracks me up every…single…time.

“Holy shit that girls got a skunk on her head! Oh…that’s just your hair. But seriously…that’s messed up.”
