In what world does this make any sense, why not just buy a USB a to C cable? It would function exactly the same as getting an Adapter for the lightning… no? When could this possibly be needed?

natebluehooves,

Lightning peripherals. They are rare, but do exist.

This is likely just a stopgap solution for a niche audience.

@M0oP0o@mander.xyz avatar

But why would you buy this? It looks like its lighting to usb c and in that case why not just use usb c? I know most modern macs have usb c and I would assume if you have the new phone that would necessitate this dongle you would also have the newer mac or PC with a usb c.

Also this is apple they sell wheels for like $900. www.apple.com/ca/shop/…/apple-mac-pro-wheels-kit

stebo02,
@stebo02@sopuli.xyz avatar

i guess so you can use your old lightning cable?

M0oP0o,
@M0oP0o@mander.xyz avatar

I guess? Spending $30 to have that tumour on your cable vs $10 or $15 for a nice usb c seems very apple.

stebo02,
@stebo02@sopuli.xyz avatar

Sure but the apple usb-c cable will be $60 and you can’t expect an apple user to buy non-apple products

M0oP0o,
@M0oP0o@mander.xyz avatar

I wonder if people will try to tell me in the future that the apple branded usb cables are better?

stebo02,
@stebo02@sopuli.xyz avatar

of course they will

newthrowaway20,

They also sell a micro fiber cloth for like $30 www.apple.com/ca/shop/product/…/polishing-cloth

What other ridiculous things can you find that apple sells?

M0oP0o,
@M0oP0o@mander.xyz avatar

Ohhh this is a fun thing to do.

Some of my favourites:

A stand $1300: www.apple.com/ca/shop/product/…/pro-stand

A set of feet $300: www.apple.com/ca/shop/…/apple-mac-pro-feet-kit

A pillow for your ear $80: www.apple.com/…/airpods-max-ear-cushions-silver?f… *and a needlessly long ULR I guess

A digital pencil $120: www.apple.com/ca/…/apple-pencil-1st-generation?fn…

LifeInOregon,

It’s not to adapt cables, it’s to adapt accessories.

M0oP0o,
@M0oP0o@mander.xyz avatar

Did not know there are that many lightning accessories, thought mac mostly went wireless with those?

LifeInOregon,

Things like thisor this.

There are more, but there are plenty of lightning based accessories and peripherals that people may not be ready to drop for the time being.

M0oP0o,
@M0oP0o@mander.xyz avatar

Ah yes, the “madcat” stuff. I must admit I did not think of those.

Mongostein,

Yeah. If you’re spending $1500 on the brand new iPhone I’m sure an extra $30 to still be able to use your accessories isn’t a big deal.

Just stay a couple years behind on Apple stuff and it’s not that expensive. I got a brand new iPhone 11 for $300 a in 2021 (it released in 2019). I’ll use it for probably four years. In 2025 I’ll probably be buying this year’s model.

rbesfe,

Not even any strain relief on the cable connections, this thing will disintegrate within 3 years

NightAuthor,

It looks like their standard rubbery cable material. The sleeve rapidly discolors, and then cracks and frays into some kinda cheese stick cheese head looking situation. Leaving the braided metal shielding exposed. Without fail, every cable for like the past 15 years.

kalleboo,

This one is using their new braided cable instead of the old plastic one

NightAuthor,

Oh, had to zoom in a bit to see the braiding. Well, let’s hope these work out better.

SnowdenHeroOfOurTime,

By sane standards, yes. By apple standards nope totally normal. I’d love to know how many billions they’ve made on cables and dongles which were only necessary because of intentional decisions they made. I probably would vomit though.

Also would be curious, how many people suffered or died due to not being able to charge their phone where a standard charger was available or vice versa for Android users?

I’ve been scoffed at for this idea before, but interoperability is extremely important, especially when you are talking about a major piece of society’s infrastructure. And phones ARE that. It’s hard to know the downstream effects of shit like this. All we know is that at best, millions of times people have had this conversation, needlessly as fuck:

“hey do you have a phone charger? I need a lightning cable.” “No I only have usb-c” (or vice versa)

The best outcome you can hope for is having to think about this and be annoyed several times in your life. For years I refused to buy lightning cables but due to several factors I have ended up needing to buy like 7 lightning cables despite never buying a single apple product that requires one.

And no, apple simps, I give not one shred of a fuck about your apple apologias, fuck off with them. Micro USB was better in the same way a qwerty keyboard is better. technically it’s inferior, but that doesn’t matter AT ALL, because 1) it’s a standard, and 2) it works.

NightAuthor,

If I were to agree on phones being infrastructure, which I may, I’d put the onus of standardization on regulators, not the for profit company.

shasta,

That’s what the EU has just done.

NightAuthor,

Oh, nice!

antim0ny,

“Also would be curious, how many people suffered or died due to not being able to charge their phone where a standard charger was available or vice versa for Android users?”

Are you seriously asking how many people have died because they can’t charge their phone?

SnowdenHeroOfOurTime,

yeah emergency situations are definitely not a thing, you’re right

atrielienz, (edited )

Google sells a $15 USB C to 3.5mm headphone jack adapter, and a $45 USB C to HDMI adapter. A $20 USB C to USB A cable. And a $20 USB C to USB C. This is standard market prices for big tech companies. I’m sure in a few weeks Anker or Aukey or whoever will have one for cheaper.

isVeryLoud,

The difference is, Google’s cables are actually good compared to Apple.

Samsung also sells a $15 USB C to 3.5mm dongle.

sebinspace,

M8 it’s never about quality. It’s about the brand.

isVeryLoud,

It’s all extremely expensive for what it is compared to Anker / Aukey / UGREEN etc., but at least google’s cables don’t break easily.

sebinspace,

In all honestly I’ve never had an Apple cable break. Haven’t had any Android cables break, either, just so you know I’m not being biased.

Maybe stop treating your cables like shit.

vox,
@vox@sopuli.xyz avatar

also usbc to 3.5mm jack adapters have a DAC inside. C-to-HDMI cables have chips in them

can’t justify price of A-C/C-C cables tho

anon_8675309,

Especially when it only costs a quarter or two to make.

mr_tyler_durden,

This sub sucks. No really, it’s be great if we could actually have conversations about Apple products and decisions instead of it being full of people that just want to dunk on Apple with uninformed and tired takes.

There is a legit way we can talk about the dongle, how it’s existence makes perfect sense, and how there are cheaper/better alternatives on the market. Instead we have “Hur hur hur, Apple expensive, what do you expect? Are you new?”. It’s not intelligent, it’s not right, and it completely ignores so many realities.

tst123,
@tst123@lemmy.world avatar

Do you work for Apple? 🤣

atyaz,

I’m as big a fan of nuance as the next guy, but yeah I mean that’s pretty expensive for a lightning to usb dongle, let’s be honest.

BobaFuttbucker,

Keep in mind this is the same amount their adapters have been forever. They’re almost always in the $19-39 range.

When you think about it, adapters are some of the few inflation-free things Apple has sold.

etler,

Why would anyone ever need this?

SirQuackTheDuck,

Expensive peripherals you don’t want to replace?

Maybe you have a very smart powerful IPhone dock or something. Spending 30 bucks to keep it operational would be better than replacing it.

jdeath,

I still have the dock connector to lightning adapter, which was purchased for that exact reason! i kinda want to get this and see if i can chain them together hahaha

etler,

Theoretically yes, but I’m having a very hard time even finding peripherals with male lightning ports when I searched out of curiosity, and the few I saw were the same price as this adapter or cheaper. Every single peripheral I found that has a male lightning port uses it for the purpose of making it sit flush against the phone, otherwise it would have made more sense to simply buy a USB-C accessory and use a C to lightning cable. This adapter removes the streamlined nature of those peripherals.

I’m sure there’s some rare use case where this adapter makes sense, so I don’t literally mean nobody would ever need this in any circumstance, but since the need for it would be so small I think the heightened price makes sense since there would be very little demand.

lom,

Also surely this should be called a lightning to USB c adapter and not the other way around?

BalooDK,

Why ? It’s transforming an usb-c port to an lightning port

ohlaph,

Definitely overpriced.

Emwe,

You chose an excessively overpriced product - now you complain about prices of an the excessively overpriced product’s accessories?

woulda thought you had taken these things into consideration when deciding to buy an excessively overpriced product

NightAuthor,

Op didn’t buy shit, they just like complaining. And who can blame me, it’s fun.

nitefox,

What’s a good mobile not overpriced phone?

Sir_Simon_Spamalot,

Or just get a good USB-C cable for $5

XTornado,

This is more for accessories with lightning connectors.

That said probably cheaper adapters will appear or maybe already exist 🤔.

jarfil,

MUCH cheaper adapters do exist. Some of them may or may not burst into flames, YMMV.

$30 is likely overpriced, but $2 is going to be way underpriced for what should be a smart adapter with some safety circuit inside… and gold plated copper connectors, not just copper plated aluminum… so pick wisely.

aCatNamedVirtute,

This is how I imagine all posts in the apple community 😊

LichbaneLB,

Just the touch of regret and confusion - hey guys, maybe we’re being overcharged here…

Like selfawarewolves, except its selfawaresheep

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Yes it is. But there’s also not one single Apple accessory you have to buy from Apple and can usually get it for a fraction of the price elsewhere, so it’s really only ignorant people and dedicated fanboys who spend the money.

jdeath,

or people who just don’t need to care about saving $10 or $20

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, but kind of fuck them for being that rich to not care.

jdeath,

fuck people for not caring much about $10? i wouldn’t even consider that being rich. do you consider everyone in the middle class as obscenely rich? the average person out of their teens and 20s can waste $10 without caring.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Not caring about spending $10 when you could spend $2 is being too rich to care. Over half of America lives paycheck-to-paycheck.

jdeath,

included in the group that lives paycheck-to-paycheck are plenty of people making six figures.

what you’re also ignoring is stuff like time cost. for a certain person, the time spent to find and research a reliable alternative at a lower price point might be worth more than $10 or $20.

IHaveTwoCows,

Capitalist pigs are spending $10 to deny spending $2 to support our comrades in SE Asia, who unironically also made the $10 version, which is unironically the exact same one

PP_BOY_,
@PP_BOY_@lemmy.world avatar

Mate I can promise you that the people splurging $10 on a accessory cable aren’t the rich people we need to be worried about. And let’s not act like Android doesn’t have its fair share of overpriced phones and cables in the market, either.

cybersandwich,

Lol

phillaholic,

I wouldn’t say a fraction 5-10% cheaper at Target or Best Buy from time to time.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Order it online. You can get it for a couple of bucks.

phillaholic,

Do you mean an Anker or Amazon Basics version or an Apple. Session but sold by someone else? If the latter, it’s counterfeit if you’re getting it at a huge discount.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar
phillaholic,

Give the disclaimers and reviews those have a ton of limitations. The official dongle has a lot more going on. It’s extremely niche to need it in the first place.

drahardja,
