DocSophie, in What Fast Food do you love?
@DocSophie@kbin.social avatar

Honestly? Mcdonalds. They're (reasonably) cheap, pretty consistent, and still decent enough that I think "Yeah, I didn't mind spending two bucks on that."

Like it's not the best food ever or anything, but if I ever want a super quick breakfast or kinda crappy burger and don't feel like making one myself, then I just hit up the nearest Mcdonalds.

elscallr,

I'll fight someone who tells me I shouldn't have McDonald's breakfast burritos. I don't eat them because I want a good breakfast burrito, I eat them because I want those specific breakfast burritos.

DocSophie,
@DocSophie@kbin.social avatar

EXACTLY! Like, man, if I wanted a good breakfast sandwich, I'd make it myself or hit up one of the local places. But I don't want a good one, I want a McDonalds one.

Jorgelino328, (edited )

@DocSophie This reminds me of Spacer's choice slogan from Outer Worlds.

"It's not the best choice, it's Spacer's choice McDonalds"

Reverendender,

I cant get out of McDonalds for less than 10 bucks, and that’s skipping the drink and using app deals

jcrabapple,

brownpaperbag,
@brownpaperbag@kbin.social avatar

Between my teens and early 20s, I worked there 3 times. I left on good terms to focus on other areas of life and they were always happy to have me back. I still love McDonalds as a treat! My go-to's are cheeseburgers or Big Mac's.

bananacles,

The McDonalds app is the most useful of all fast food options. My husband and I use the 2-for-1 breakfast sandwich deal on the Steak, Egg, & Cheese Bagel whenever we want to treat ourselves on the weekend. There is nothing else like it. Also, the McDonalds rewards rack up super quickly. Anytime, we need a light meal, I get one or two free sandwiches with reward points. 10/10 recommend. 👍👍

Taco Bell would be my second choice if only because their cravings box scratches the hunger itch so fantastically. 🤤

DocSophie,
@DocSophie@kbin.social avatar

YEP the mcdonalds app is the second reason i go there; a big-ass coffee on the cheap, which gives me an excuse to get away from the bird-kids when they're being particularly shouty? you bet your bippy im taking that offer

elscallr,

I keep forgetting that damn app exists. I just opened it after forever and there's some pretty decent deals in there even without the rewards.

peeledbanana,

I love the blueberry pomegranate smoothie, the new chicken wraps are pretty delicious too

HipHoboHarold,
@HipHoboHarold@kbin.social avatar

I'm not a fan of the burgers. In general would rather just not get anything if that's the option. But their fries and breakfast items? The chicken nuggets? Yes. Hands down some of the best. I will fight someone for a McGriddle.

xaufy,

Mcdonalds fries are top tier

DocSophie,
@DocSophie@kbin.social avatar

I used to like them, but lately I've gravitated to Wendy's fries. It's not even the beef fat/vegetable oil switch that happened back in the 90s??? or whatever, I just think I prefer thicker potato cuts for my fries.

platysalty,

I swear they sprinkle crack on those fries.

Ragnell, in Subscribing to the same magazines/communities on Kbin and Lemmy?
@Ragnell@kbin.social avatar

I'm subscribing to all and I'll just unsubscribe if it turns out I don't like them. For overlapping ones I haven't seen many duplicate threads. If I post, though, I'll stick to one and right now I'm favoring the one on my instance.

patchw3rk,
@patchw3rk@kbin.social avatar

@Ragnell

I created /m/BestOf on kbin to kind of avoid having multiple instances of all. I wonder why other communities don't try to represent all of the Fediverse instead of just their instances..?

Rhapsody,

Because people aren’t used to the idea of the fediverse and are ultimately treating their instance as a monolithic entity, when that’s not the case.

Ragnell,
@Ragnell@kbin.social avatar

I actually like the idea of duplicate communities, because well... Let's say you want to talk Sherlock Holmes.

Well, some people don't want to discuss BBC Sherlock. Others don't want to discuss whether or not he's queer. And some want to discuss neither.

So to accommodate everyone, you WILL need 3 communities anyway. They may as well be on separate instances, so that if one goes down or isn't very active you can at least discuss the stuff that's allowed there.

WookieMunster,

So the whole community is fragmented, why not make an entire different post ?

FfaerieOxide, in Can we have one day without talking about poop?
@FfaerieOxide@kbin.social avatar

Can we have one day without talking about poop?

I bet we could go 3 days. 🤔

Untitled9999, in Do you wipe sitting or standing?
@Untitled9999@kbin.social avatar

I wipe sitting. I think most people probably do. Standing up will push your arse cheeks together, so the poo inside the crack will just smear everywhere.

As for bidets, I don't use them. They're very rare in my country. I just wipe with toilet paper. I try to get my arse as clean as possible with the toilet paper, so I wipe multiple times.

Thank you for reading my post about my pooing habits.

vinzen,

Thanks I do the same

saegiru,

Rare or not, get a bidet for home. It's like $25 US for a basic model, and you will never go back. I feel like an absolute savage when I can't use a bidet now. My best argument is this: Imagine if you fell into a pile of manure. Would you just get some dry paper towel and wipe yourself off and call it good?

If your answer is anything other than no, I don't have a rebuttal, but you do you.

In answer to the question, I still wipe the water away sitting down. Standing up doesn't make any sense as you essentially make a shit sandwich with your cheeks... and even though I'm clean down there now - I learned that way and don't plan on changing.

terrrmus,
@terrrmus@kbin.social avatar

I used a $30 bidet for about 6 years. It's has always been amazing. We finally redid our bathroom so I went with a deluxe heated seat, heated water, blow dryer, etc. Gat damn is it wonderful, but it will spoil you. Makes pooping anywhere else dreadful. I'm trying to solve this by gifting my friends bidets for Christmas. So far it's working.

Fleabomber,
@Fleabomber@kbin.social avatar

Oy, get your clean ass outta here.

kestrel7,
@kestrel7@kbin.social avatar

I know exactly what you mean. People are too embarrassed to talk about this basic truth truth: if I go back to somebody's house on a date and they don't have a bidet, I'm not going to do butt stuff with them.

VioletRing,

I love my bidet, but I can't get anyone else on board. How do you get people comfortable with sharing one? I've attempted to get my sisters to try mine, but they both think a bidet is like a personal item and gross to share.

CodingSquirrel,

"Yet you happily use both my toilet and my sink, and my ass cheeks regularly touches one of those."

eltimablo,

Forcing them to guess which one might help hasten the transition.

FreeBooteR69,
@FreeBooteR69@kbin.social avatar

Wow, bidets for $30? It can be $1k to $3k cad just for the bowl here. It's like $500 and up just for the seats! That doesn't account for the other bits and bobs you need to get it all installed.

AttackBunny,
@AttackBunny@kbin.social avatar

They are bolt on seats only, not a full toilet style bidet. You can see a bunch of them here on amazon. tushy ones seem to be pretty popular over on the place that will not be named. They are low on frills (like no heated water typically).

Personally, I splurged for a Kohler with all the bells and whistles (definitely wasn't $30). OMG it's hands down the greatest thing I have ever bought. Heated seat, air dry, heated water, amongst other things.

Psychonaut1969,
@Psychonaut1969@kbin.social avatar

I think the price difference is between electric and not electric. the electric ones are pricier. The ones that don't use electricity are much cheaper. These kits don't come with a seat or a bowl and use your existing toilet.

AttackBunny,
@AttackBunny@kbin.social avatar

Lol if I fell in manure I wouldn't just take the hose and wash it off, then paper towel dry either. There would definitely be LOTS of saop involved. Just saying.

I'm in total agreement though. Got a nice bidet seat and it's hands down the best thing ever. I hate using bathrooms in the wild, at all, because they lack the heated seat my bidet has, in addition to the lack of the bidet part.

SuiXi3D,
@SuiXi3D@kbin.social avatar

They're very rare in my country.

So get a battery powered portable bidet! I’m in the US and the one I got has been a life saver.

wahming, in Why is no one decorating their magazines?

Jaysyn,
@Jaysyn@kbin.social avatar

I haven't found that option yet.

wahming,

Oh no, that doesn't exist here yet. I was referring to the option in old reddit

H2SO4,

I'm in the same boat. So I just threw together a quick userscript which removes custom CSS on magazines:
https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/469581-kbin-social-remove-custom-styles

You'll need Greasemonkey, Tampermonkey (browser addons) or similar to install the script.

harmonea,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

Thank you, I've come across one (1) magazine with custom CSS and it didn't take the font colors in kbin's dark themes into account.

(The mod was super cool about it and reverted the change until a better solution could be found, but I knew then I would need this option in the future)

cutitdown,

It's possible for mods to make themes that correspond to each specific kbin theme selection. Maybe I nee to write up a post and share how to do it.

harmonea,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

Oh, from my brief poke into magazine settings it didn't look possible; I'm sure people would really appreciate it!

RheingoldRiver,

Thanks very much for this. I really appreciate that the option to customize exists for people who want it; equally, I appreciate that the option to NOT have customizations exists for me :)

FermatsLastAccount,

I think that was an RES option

@Zebrazilla@kbin.social avatar

If you still want to target reddit, without overtly giving traffic to reddit, I highly recommend one of the many LibReddit instances. -hypnotoad-,
@-hypnotoad-@kbin.social avatar

Libreddit will lose access after June 30 correct? Didn't know about the project until I joined Kbin.

Midou,

They don't know what should they do at this point, they wanted to scrape the website (which is what teddit plans to do) but saw that it would be too muc work, then they said they would use graphQL and now they want to cache requests to reduce the API usage while asking for the instance admins to provide the private key. They made a poll on github on wether they should make the telemetry of sending the number of requests in a totally private way, and the majority was fine, but the devs were still skeptical on adding this feature, so yeah, libreddit doesn't have a bright future currently.

    TimeSquirrel,
    @TimeSquirrel@kbin.social avatar

    It would also be nice to have a "context" button on comments in your profile so you can quickly see your comment surrounded by the comments you were interacting with, like Reddit did. Right now I'm having to go back to the original thread and find my comment to see the sub-thread it was part of and remember what it was we were talking about.

    Also having trouble seeing comment reply notifications from instances outside of kbin. They don't show up at all and I am unable to see if people are replying to them. Have to go back to the original thread again.

    @thereisalamp@kbin.social avatar

    CoffeeAddict, in How do we feel about federating with Threads?
    @CoffeeAddict@kbin.social avatar

    My main concern is that this is just Facebook Meta utilizing the “Embrace, Extend, Extinguish” strategy that Microsoft used against Netscape in the 90s.

    I feel like our small communities here - which are just getting started - are going to be flooded by Threads users who don’t even know what federation is and then all the content, power & control will realistically be in Meta’s hands.

    My gut says that is probably Meta’s goal, but what do I know? I’m just some internet person.

    livus,
    @livus@kbin.social avatar

    I think you're right though.

    CoffeeAddict, (edited )
    @CoffeeAddict@kbin.social avatar

    Right!?

    Decentralized networks are a threat to Meta’s entire business model which runs on advertisements. That doesn’t work very well when your users can just jump to another instance without ads.

    Meta wants to nip the fediverse in the bud now before it’s too late for them to get a foothold. I think they’re gonna do it by (trying) to port their massive userbase to Threads, make other instances dependent on their content and users, and then pull the plug so they can go back to selling everyone’s information to advertisers.

    Edit:
    https://i.imgur.com/4U0g4Bk.png
    I saw this image floating around a few days ago that I think helps illustrate that even if a fraction of Meta's userbase migrates to Threads it will be enough to dominate the fediverse. Instagram has two billion users, and the entire fediverse only has around 1.5 million.

    FaceDeer,
    @FaceDeer@kbin.social avatar

    Threads, despite its name, is not a threaded discussion forum like the Threadiverse. It's more like Mastodon, a microblogging protocol. I don't think we'll be seeing Threads users flooding here because the format of these communities isn't really compatible with that.

    atocci,
    @atocci@kbin.social avatar

    How would power be handed to Meta just because Threads has more users? The communities are under the control of the instances where they were created, and Threads users couldn't create larger communities to replace them either since it's only a microblogging platform.

    CoffeeAddict,
    @CoffeeAddict@kbin.social avatar

    The concept is that overtime, communities and connections will organically grow. If Threads has a disproportionally large ubserbase, then overtime they will create a similarly larger number of communities. This then would give them a lot more influence over the fediverse and anyone federated with them.

    For smaller instances that become accustomed to seeing those communities and content, the danger is that Meta can just “pull the plug,” defederate, and extinguish the competition, or at the very least hurt their competitor's users experiences when interacting with content from Threads. The reason they might do this is purely because it fits into their business model which is selling user data to advertisers; it is in Meta’s interest to have as much data on their users as possible, and to have those users be based on Meta’s platform.

    As I said in another comment, I could be totally wrong and this could benefit the fediverse. I just think the opposite is more likely because I do not trust Meta. I think they will play nice in the beginning, but then start to flex their muscles once they feel they’ve got enough influence.

    Also, there is nothing stopping them from expanding Thread’s capabilities to include the threadiverse. Kbin has already demonstrated both are possible in one app.

    atocci,
    @atocci@kbin.social avatar

    If they pull the plug on ActivityPub and take their users back, things would just be exactly how they are now. Since they can't create communities or magazines like we can (and it's very unlikely Meta is going to try to implement this), if they want to participate in discussion here, they'll be posting in our communities. Kbin's magazines are uniquely suited to this as well because content gets sorted into them based on hashtags, so they wouldn't even need to know that they're posting to a magazine to do it.

    We're already in a situation like you describe though with lemmy.world's near monopoly on large communities, which seems concerning to me as is.

    CoffeeAddict,
    @CoffeeAddict@kbin.social avatar

    I hope you’re right.

    And I agree, lemmy.world does have a near-monopoly on large communities. I attribute that to lemmy being more developed and having apps ready and kbin simply not being completely ready in June (no shade thrown at ernest - he’s great and I like kbin better.) I hope overtime kbin grows some of its own large communities so it’s not so skewed towards a single instance.

    atocci,
    @atocci@kbin.social avatar

    Just to clarify what I mean, lemmy.world's position is bad for the threadiverse as a whole. It's where most of our users and largest communities we all post to are. If .world goes down, it'd be a major blow to our current, mostly stable, position and we'd be significantly worse off than if Meta were to come and go. Things are improving though and communities are slowly spreading to other instances! I also deeply appreciate that we have kbin as an alternative to Lemmy - thank you Ernest

    snooggums, in How do we feel about federating with Threads?
    @snooggums@kbin.social avatar

    I would prefer not to federated with threads and will block if kbin federated. If I wanted Facebook content I would use Facebook.

    Ganondorf,
    @Ganondorf@kbin.social avatar

    How would you block threads? There are still many things about kbin that confuse me, so asking in earnest.

    snooggums,
    @snooggums@kbin.social avatar

    Kbin has settings to block entire instances. Unless threads is implemented as a ton of different instances it should be easy to just block threads.meta or whatever their instance is called.

    I have a few instances like lemmy.ml on my block list already.

    Roundcat, in What do you like about kbin?
    @Roundcat@kbin.social avatar

    I like the UI because it doesn't remind me of reddit and details aren't as small as they are on most lemmy instances. I like the ability to turn off federation at will if I just want to check out kbin content, or manage what federated content I do see. I like the microblogs and the integration with mastodon. I like how there's no hard limit in the microblog, so I can use it as a twitlonger for my mastodon posts. I like that the creator seems to be an alright dude and doesn't hold any problematic views compared to the lemmy devs. I like being the kbin user in a sea of lemmings, makes me feel special.

    Mars2k21, (edited ) in What are your opinions on the other Reddit alternatives like Squabbles.io, Raddle, Tildes, etc?
    @Mars2k21@kbin.social avatar

    I actually joined Tildes before the API changes, back in February of this year. Before that, I had been a lurker on the site since 2020, so nearly 3 years.

    Tildes is...interesting compared to any other social media. Its completely its own thing and there is a heavy focus on the philosophy of the site and the Tildes docs, which is basically the constitution of the website. Long form discussion is encouraged, posting images isn't even an option, and its very focused on providing for its users a great, streamlined experience. The interface is my favorite of all the Reddit cousins, its simple and it loads extremely fast. The software is great, no bugs at all and the interface is simple and lighting fast and the voting system is really well designed in regards to maintaining activity on threads that can be days or even weeks old. The people there are friendly and I've never even seen a bad interaction on Tildes.

    However, this comes because the whole site is heavily moderated and controlled by the admins and mods. Long form discussion just isn't really my thing when it comes to online discussions, so I don't talk there much. I don't really like writing a paragraph or more in response to every question online versus having a long in-person discussion or on a real-time messenger like Discord (I'm doing it now of course, but I don't like doing it for every post). I would if every topic there interested me, but that's just not the case and that won't be the case on any site. My last post was 2 months ago, and I've just been very inactive there since making my account. I like reading on there occasionally, but not contributing much. Unfortunately, that's the nature of the site. Like another poster said, its very tightly controlled. While that prevents many trolls from appearing despite the few moderators that are actually on the site and encourages long form discussion, it also hampers the diversity of the people there. Sometimes I criticize the whole "We don't want people from Reddit or other social media" take when it comes to Kbin/Lemmy's growth, but its much worse on Tildes because the site actively wants a certain type of individual. No image support on purpose already filters out a lot of people who could bring great content to the site, and the lack of an ability for users to create topics affects it more. You can't make a topic on Tildes like you can on Kbin or Lemmy, there are strictly defined ones created for you, and they are quite general. You won't see much OC as you will just links and random conversation topics, and that kind of just makes for a lukewarm experience in my opinion. If you want to talk about a specific niche, you're out of luck. Kbin/Lemmy/the Fediverse and Reddit have that, and its a large part of the appeal for me. The lack of user diversity in interests also just makes the experience a little worse. For example, I like space and anime, and the space and anime communities on there aren't the most active, maybe a post weekly or biweekly. I'm also interested in tech, and you can imagine that community is booming 24/7. Compare the ~space community to /m/space, and you'll see the difference. This issue went away somewhat while the Reddit migration was in full effect, but now its returned as activity on the site has dwindled down a bit.

    Tildes cares about the users, no doubt, but it doesn't really give them much power over the site. I wish it were less controlled.

    I highly suggest you just take a look at it and lurk for a few days on there. What you see is what you get. Its not ultra politically focused like you said Raddle was (I have 0 experience with any of these sites other than Tildes, Kbin and Lemmy), its has equal activity in most of the communities. However, there are only 20 or 30 to actually choose from, and if you want something niche you'll just have to post in one of the communities and see if someone knows about it. If you don't like it, I wouldn't be expecting it to change much, the site culture isn't dynamic like the Fediverse or Reddit for instance. The conversation there is unparalleled by any other platform though. You can find some truly inspiring and deep conversations on there. Its not for me, but you may like it a lot. Its a flawed approach, but the site fulfills what it intends to do very well. For me, Lemmy and Kbin, while not perfect, are the best alternative to Reddit. Tildes is open source and anybody could make an instance of it, but it hasn't happened yet as far as I know.

    Ironically, that's the longest thing I've ever typed on Kbin.

    Sarsaparilla, in Anyone else still kinda miss Reddit?
    @Sarsaparilla@kbin.social avatar

    I was there 17 years. Can't say I miss it, but I do lament it. The community there helped change my life in some very significant ways. But it became glaringly obvious that the administration have little to no appreciation or respect for their users. I've been enjoying watching them scramble to re-engage lost value in their IPO. I will only return to participate on r/place ... whether that's thru the void or a "Fuck u/spez" ... they will get my traffic for that.

    While this is absolutely sad and I hope he's healed past this, I feel like it's also strange? No actor is ever going to play only beloved characters. Many are neutral side characters or even villains, meant to be hated. As long as the hate didn't bleed through into real life, why internalize anger that's really directed at the writers for creating such an annoyance of a character?

    optissima,

    He got lots of hatemail directed at him, not JarJar

    Well, I did say

    As long as the hate didn't bleed through into real life

    I suppose the person I quoted misrepresented the reason the actor took it so personally. It's not "people didn't like my character," it's "a few people are assholes who can't separate fiction from reality."
