mrnotoriousman, in The worst physical pain you've ever experienced ?

I have chronic pancreatitis. Some of the worst attacks were beyond imagination almost. Dilaudid is the only thing that helps and I've still been screaming in pain with it.

Davel23, in The worst physical pain you've ever experienced ?

I'm currently laid up in bed with some kind of sciatica thing. Not too bad when I'm lying down, but burning agony when I walk.

Still don't think it's the worst I've had, that would probably be when my gall bladder flared up. Couldn't inhale without stabbing pain in my side.

Th4tGuyII, in The worst physical pain you've ever experienced ?

Appendicitis is the worst pain I've ever experienced. The three-ish hours from when the pain first started to when I got in the ambulance were horrific!

I was vomiting near constantly, to the point where I'd thrown up my stomach lining. I had complete tunnel vision, everything was black except the very centre of my field of view. I felt feverish, I sweat all over. Not to mention the physical pain. It was torture I wouldn't even wish on my worst enemy.

When the IV painkillers finally took effect, it was a relief I'd never known before. If I remember correctly I actually fell asleep for a bit, likely due to exhaustion from earlier.

I later learnt it'd gone septic too - scary stuf - but luckily some strong antibiotics and a surgery later, I was much better off. That experience only served to renew my appreciation for the NHS fir sure.

wnose, in The worst physical pain you've ever experienced ?

Back in the military, dental was covered. So I went with removal of 4 wisdom teeth - both sides, top and bottom. I was numbed for it, but the recovery for the next 4 days as brutal. 10/10 mindbending pain.

And all they gave me was Tylenol.

Entropywins,
@Entropywins@kbin.social avatar

Oh they gave me vicodin when I had it done in the military... I remember trying to eat some ramen after a day or something and the pain with not even really chewing but trying to get the noodles down was ridiculous

themadcodger, in The worst physical pain you've ever experienced ?
@themadcodger@kbin.social avatar

I've suffered from migraines since I was a kid, though thankfully not as frequently as some people. If I can catch it early enough with medication (I'm lucky one works for me) it's not the end of the world.

The few times I haven't been able to get the meds have been the absolute worst pain. 10/10 pain scale, everything hurts, every nerve on fire. Not only is your entire body protesting its existence while someone is jamming a spike into your eye and wiggling it around while someone else is splitting your skull open with a something dull, but everything external causes extra pain. Lights hurt, sounds hurt, smells hurt whatever that means. It's the only time I've been suicidal if it meant ending the pain.

When someone tells you "Oh, I've had migraines they're not that bad I just try to ignore it" no, they've had a headache. Migraines leave you sobbing in a dark room hoping you die sooner than later. Do not recommend.

Grumpykitten1, in The worst physical pain you've ever experienced ?

A rheumatoid arthritis flare in my shoulder bad enough to cause a dislocation. They can't just pop it back in when it's pushed out from the inside, just have to wait for the steroids to kick in and hope for the best. It took 6 months of physio to get 95% range of motion back. But I'm feeling much better now (and just finished a season of night court on dvd from my local library).

Th4tGuyII, in Can we have one day without talking about poop?
@Th4tGuyII@kbin.social avatar

Best we can do is three

TwistedFox, in How do I remove sticker residue from glass containers?

Goo-B-Gone or Goo-Gone, plus steel wool like SOS pads or Scotch-Guard. Razors would work if it was a flat surface, but on a curved one like a bottle or glass, you want the flexibility of the steel wool.

SolacefromSilence,

+1 for steel wool

RegularBard, in The worst physical pain you've ever experienced ?

I have scoliosis, and it was not noticed when I joined the USA military. Then, during a training exercise, I fell down a flight of stairs while carrying >100 lbs of gear.

After medical and a discharge, I was at home and I stood up from my couch only to hear a loud crack and suddenly realized that when people see stars they LITERALLY see stars

My lower back felt like someone had jammed a needle between two vertebrae, and I could see pulsating waves of red and blue over my vision. 0/10, do not recommend. Don't join the military 👍

Computerchairgeneral, in Subscribing to the same magazines/communities on Kbin and Lemmy?

Like others have said you can subscribe to as many or as few as you like. Personally, I'm subscribed to multiple "duplicate" communities. It's not really been a problem out of some rare instances, like when one of the Reddit third-party apps announced they were moving to Lemmy.

I found there's generally no issue in just subscribing to a lot of magazines, all the content curates itself in the main feed and I'm not seeing too many distress duplicates cross instance

tnkt, in Will we ever have a kbin app for Android or IOS ?

I like PWAs better. They seem 1000 times less likely to have a security problem

beefcat,
@beefcat@kbin.social avatar

PWAs always feel way clunkier than a proper native iOS app.

I fully believe the reason Apollo was the best Reddit app, period, is because it was 100% native and fully embraced all the design patterns used throughout the rest of iOS. No amount of flashy CSS or fancy javascript frameworks can fully re-create that level of cohesion.

doublejay,

Yeah I have the pwa on safari / iOS . Fine for the most part , but I seem to struggle with navigating. The browser back button seems to be unavailable a lot

kbity,
@kbity@kbin.social avatar

Having the option of native clients, whether on desktop or mobile, is good. Having a mobile app that fully respects its platform's design language or a desktop client that uses less resources than a web browser and will run without issue on something like a Pi can go a long way to making a web platform enjoyable to use.

Hell, you could tweet from a BBS at one point (maybe you still can?) and until July 1st you can browse Reddit in a Linux terminal using basically zero resources. Lemmy has this neat project for a web interface that will run on a toaster, for example. Maybe kbin will get something similar once its API is mature.

arquebus_x,

The PWA for kbin.social doesn’t have a back button. Security is great but proper navigation is better.

Cylusthevirus, in How do I remove sticker residue from glass containers?

Nobody's mentioned lighter fluid so far, but that stuff works well. Dad always used Ronsonol and it's quite cheap. It's also highly flammable, so mind that.

tal, (edited )
@tal@kbin.social avatar

A couple points:

The lighter fluid that the parent poster is talking about, Ronsonol, is not the stuff that goes in butane lighters, nor is it the "lighter fluid" used to start charcoal barbecues. He's talking about the stuff that goes into Zippo and similar refillable lighters, stuff that's also called "naphtha".

If you want to use it as a solvent with much frequency, you can get the stuff at dramatically-lower unit prices in much larger containers than what Ronsonol is sold at.

https://www.amazon.com/2-Pack-VM-NAPTHA-QT-KLEAN-STRIP/dp/B01LWRQPWK/

Keep in mind that this is potent stuff and can damage some surfaces. For example, another user is talking about using Goo Gone above to remove adhesive from paint on a wall. Naphtha is more-or-less paint thinner -- your wall's paint will dissolve in it. It'd be fine on glass, what OP is intending it for, but if you use it elsewhere, be careful with it, try it on a small amount of the surface somewhere first to see if it damages it.

It can also cause skin irritation. Probably not a big deal unless you're regularly using it, but worth keeping in mind.

I also have a container of white spirits, which are similar but less volatile.

BaroqueInMind,
@BaroqueInMind@kbin.social avatar

This is a really helpful post. Thank you for the link, because I spend way too much buying Ronsonol

tal,
@tal@kbin.social avatar

I don't smoke, but I absolutely adore the sound that a Zippo makes when flicked open and struck, and wanted to get one a while back. I was kind of appalled at the fluid pricing -- the Zippo-brand fluid is even pricier, and I've seen the Ronsonol fluid itself recommended as a lower-priced alternative.

There are a lot of other things that people can burn in the refillable lighters, but I went through various testing that other people did and tried some myself, and none other than naphtha are really satisfactory. Some -- like white spirits -- aren't volatile enough, and won't maintain a consistent flame. Some, like gasoline, or low-water-content isopropyl alcohol, are too volatile and evaporate even more quickly than the regular fluid does or risk making an out-of-control fire.

Also works for the hand-warmers, which use the same fuel (and go through a great deal more of it than the lighters, so it's more-important there).

On an side note, I really wish that lighters of that sort would introduce some type of gasket that isn't dissolved by the fuel to help reduce the fuel vapor leaking out of the device when closed, or maybe some sort of other mechanism that seals the fuel reservoir off when the lighters are closed. As it stands, for a regular smoker, the fuel loss isn't a huge deal, but for someone who infrequently uses a lighter of the sort, the fuel loss is much more obnoxious -- it only takes several weeks for the reservoir to empty itself, in my experience.

Hstansss, in The worst physical pain you've ever experienced ?

Burst ovarian cyst.

It's the only time I've literally felt like vomiting from pain. I went to the ER, waited for hours and went through a bunch of tests for them to tell me they couldn't really do anything and that it would feel better over the next few days. $12k bill came in the mail a few weeks later.

MinnePuffin,

Same here. I think they gave me antibiotics, but other than that just said it happens sometimes and sent me to curl up in a ball in the comfort of my own home. It really does feel like what it is, just something bursting inside your body. Not great!
