Sharmat, in What is the most Successful Lie in History?

I’d say the Donation of Constantine

It was a forged Imperial Roman decree supposedly from Emperor Constantine the Great, which gave all temporal power over the Western Roman Empire to the Pope. Now, how is this important? This was how the papacy came into possession of the Lateran Palace, which was the Pope’s residence for much of history. It also served as the justification for the pope to break the formal convention of the five episcopal sees (i.e in the early church, Rome was just one of the important seats of power, the others were: Constantinople, Jerusalem, Alexandria and Antioch and all had equal authority) and declare itself supreme over the other centres. It also played an important role in the events of the Great Schism of 1054 (which formally separated the Western Latin church from the Eastern Greek church) and the investiture crisis in the 11th to 13th centuries.

Seriously though, thanks for this great comment!

Drusas,

If you subscribe to the right subs/magazines/communities/whatever, there is a ton to learn. History, science, archeology, sociology, psychology, medicine, marine biology, mycology, geography, foreign languages, programming.... On and on and on. Social media doesn't have to be utter crap.

I'm trying to rebuild my sources after losing the useful ones on Reddit. Which ones in Lemmy/Kbin can you recommend?

Tigbitties, in What’s a place from your childhood that doesn’t exist anymore?
@Tigbitties@kbin.social avatar

There was a forest we use to play in behind my friends house . It had a few giant trees. They must have been hundreds of years old. One was 3-4 meters in diameter. We used to climb them using the coarse bark up to the branches and see how high we could go. You could see the whole neighborhood. Wonderful memories.

That whole area is filled with Mcmansions now.

laivindil,

Same where I grew up, worst part was the developer bought it like two decades ago, sat on it for five ish years (logged a single dirt road), then put in paved roads/utilities and a demo house for another five with empty lots cut, and the last ten or so have built maybe four more. So it's not even utilized, they cut down huge swaths of forest and it's just sat most of the time.

irinotecan,

This happened on a much smaller scale to me. My grandparent's home was demolished to make way for a McMansion after they sold it. They were the only people to ever live in that beautiful house.

@brownpaperbag@kbin.social avatar

We had an incredible ravine that got destroyed for a highway that I've driven many times as an adult. It's a rare trip that I don't think back to the beautiful place where I spent countless hours of summer breaks being wild and free.

limelight79,

There are some woods in our neighborhood, which aren't owned by anyone in the neighborhood. The risk is obvious. I would like us to buy those woods so we control them, but every time I say it, they start screeching, "I don't want an HOA!" Neither do I, I have two RVs sitting in my driveway. But I would like some limited partnership simply for owning those woods....

MxRemy, in You just won One Billion Dollars, what are you buying?
@MxRemy@lemmy.one avatar

Easy. I'm building a low-income non-equity housing co-op. It'll have very small homes built from sustainable materials, distributed throughout a permaculture-based native plants food forest. In the middle there will be a big central space that functions as a community kitchen, storage space, and venue. The buildings will all be connected through a series of raised, fenced-in, roofed walkways that allow animal life to pass underneath, but also are accessibly designed for (provided) wheelchair/scooter use. We'll run all the wiring through these as well. It'll be powered by solar/etc and we'll have our own self-hosted municipal wifi with free email addresses and storage for residents. And etc, etc lol, obviously this is a very long standing pipe dream for me.

Talaraine,
@Talaraine@kbin.social avatar

I could get behind that!

brownpaperbag,
@brownpaperbag@kbin.social avatar

My husband and I had a similar idea but for ourselves and friends versus your purpose-built need. With a billion dollars we can do both and then some so I'll build my commune and pay for yours to exist in multiple areas globally.

Hyggyldy,

An excess of single family housing is a major contributor to homelessness. We need denser housing. I'd rather work towards building something like a dense arcology. Somewhere for people to live that makes efficient use of the space to grow plants.

MxRemy,
@MxRemy@lemmy.one avatar

I knew about this problem, the whole issue with the tradeoffs/advantages/disadvantages between having denser housing vs having adequate green space. However, I didn't know there were any reasonably well developed potential solutions! Thank you for introducing me to the concept of Arcology, this is awesome.

What if my proposed setup was more like tall dense multifamily buildings instead? Maybe something like how Pueblo housing worked?

Hyggyldy,

That's not a bad idea. Kinda combining the ideas. Smallish apartment buildings or multiplexes with lots of green space?

MxRemy,
@MxRemy@lemmy.one avatar

Yeah exactly. I feel like it might be more kind of "doable" on a smaller community-level scale, which appeals to me because anarchy. I don't know how well it actually threads that needle though, and whether it introduces its own problems

Hyggyldy,

That makes a lot of sense.

Flaky_Fish69, (edited )
@Flaky_Fish69@kbin.social avatar

My first thought was reaching out to a property developer I know, and paying them to take care of the housing crisis in the state… housing first. I would then shame the absolute living fuck out of the people here that are more interested in children’s genitals, on behalf of some asshole god they worship.

Not quite as environmentally friendly- there would be efforts, but, then I would also use a substantial chunk of it to invest into things like solar or batteries, and energy grid development.

I would also buy myself the Lego venator kit. (Star Wars, Vader’s flagship from ESB).

Flaky_Fish69, (edited ) in How do you stay interested in something for a long time?
@Flaky_Fish69@kbin.social avatar

Take breaks.

A hobby is supposed to be fun, or relaxing. Step back for a bit when it stops. (This is why good hobbies frequently make bad jobs.)

ETA: it's also not important that hobbies be perfect or even useful, take the stress of perfection out of it. enjoy the imperfection.

harmonea, (edited ) in What is Kbin’s identity?
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

Why use Kbin over Mastodon to post a microblog to the Fediverse? Genuinely curious!

There were so many times I was browsing reddit and thought to myself, "this didn't deserve a post of its own." Was it content related to the subreddit? Absolutely. But it was simple, trite, repetitive - for example, just someone having a halfway neat experience in a game, but with an incident for which the novelty had worn thin for long-term players long ago. (oh so your taming inspiration lined up with a thrumbo passing, wao sugoi moving on....)

On the flip side, I'd often want to share my inane thoughts about a topic with others interested in that topic, but I knew my inane thoughts didn't really warrant a whole post. Sometimes I just wanted to say "I thought this event story was neat" without adding a "what did you think?" and massaging whatever discussion thread followed.

So, in short, I had a higher standard for what counted as discussion-worthy and was dissatisfied when both consuming and producing content because of it.

The kbin magazine blend of discussion threads and microblogs is perfect for this sort of problem, in my opinion, which is why kbin is my ideal setup. You clearly define when you want to make a discussion space for everyone vs. when you want to just bounce a thought into other like-minded people simply by whether you create a thread or a microblog, and you don't need two different sites (reddit/twitter, or lemmy/mastodon) to do it.

DreamerOfImprobableDreams,

Some subreddits already had a daily/weekly discussion thread pinned to the top to serve exactly this purpose. Kbin's just taken that idea and made it a default part of the software.

Kaldo,
@Kaldo@kbin.social avatar

I was never a big fan of twitter/mastodon random personal ramblings that would fill my feed so I was naturally very skeptical of the microblogging feature in kbin, but honestly... it kinda makes sense here!

If I'm on a magazine for some game like elden ring, for example, it makes sense to keep threads for big threaded conversations while using the microblog for just small thoughts, tips, screenshots, for sharing personal accomplishments or smaller things like that which don't usually create big discussions. If I need to ask a quick question I can just make a microblog post and maybe get answers even from people using mastodon that aren't on kbin or lemmy!

I'm mostly repeating what you said, I know, but just wanted to gush about it a bit, it's a pretty cool idea.

inkican, in What is Kbin’s identity?

Kbin identifies as 'Not Reddit' and that's good enough for me.

hightrix,

Get rid of greed

Pons_Aelius, in If you could permanently change ONE thing about the world right now what would it be and why?

That humans are actually the rational beings many claim themselves to be, rather than animals that makes decisions based on emotion and then rationalise why they made the decision.

I feel it would solve all the problems other commenters have mentioned.

guyrocket,
@guyrocket@kbin.social avatar

So, exclusively rational decision making?

Pons_Aelius,

Pretty much.

The co2 we are emitting into the atmosphere is leading to problems.

Rational response: reduce our co2 emissions as fast as possible.

Our constant population expansion and habitat destruction is causing a new mass extension event:

Rational response: Limit population growth. reduce environmental impact and regenerate damage already done.

Etc

etc

etc.

kakes,

While I agree there are some problems that would be best solved through rational thinking, I wouldn’t want to live in a purely “rational” world. The entirety of the human experience lies between the gaps of rationality.

MxM111,
@MxM111@kbin.social avatar

Wanting to feel love and happiness is quite rational too. Irrational feelings are not “anti- rational” they are just orthogonal, like color to taste. But making decisions based pure on feelings IS anti-rational.

osarusan,

That's a popular trope that is spouted by anti-rationalists all the time, but it's a total red herring. It's one of those rhetorical tactics that is designed to disrupt judgment and put a stop to a conversation before the absurdity of the claim is made obvious. It's drilled into us as children through tv, movies, even books, but it's entirely false.

Rationalism has plenty of room for fantasy, emotion, and everything else that humans experience. It's not a choice between being rational and being a fully developed human. The choice is between being rational and being irrational. Everything else is its own separate thing.
