Nepenthe, in How to make the poll feature on social platforms not suck
@Nepenthe@kbin.social avatar

It would be more representative, but the thing that would kill it is it would also be annoying. I rolled my eyes at reddit pushing non-subbed content to me, and it would personally feel like a callback to that. Not out of disinterest in the poll, but because I didn't get to choose. User-generated pop-up is still a pop-up.

I'd be concerned about the possibility it may end up being a sub that's popularly blocked to avoid being spammed with unwanted questions, or at least one that's complained about.

neon_cat,
@neon_cat@kbin.social avatar

I understand what you mean. If we asked like 2% of all active users (which might be enough), you'd get a pop up on average once every 4 years, which is probably not enough to annoy anybody.

Pandoras_Can_Opener, in What to do with a toxic friend in a group?
@Pandoras_Can_Opener@mander.xyz avatar

So the first question is what do you want? Do you want projects done with the group? Do you want to help toxic person? Do you want friend group without toxic guy? What do the non toxic people want? The advice will change a lot based on what the priorities are.

Query, (edited )

I think the nontoxic friends just want to keep the group as a whole. We do an activity together that takes place every week. When the group increased we started doing more activities together, playing games, celebrating birthdays, etc.

Until last year we were only 3 friends. In the last 2-3 years I showed up in that activity very rarely (maybe once every 2-3 months) since it became time-consuming and repetitive.

Last year I made new friends that came for some time. They were very interested in that activity, so I invited them, and they became friends with my friends there. Since they had to commute from another city to do the activity, I felt somewhat "forced" to attend more frequently.

I think I just want to be able to occasionally hang out with my friends of group A, without generating tension with that guy. I want to go back to doing the activity every 2-3 months, and sometimes meet only with the 3 friends from the start.

I do not want to be called out if I distance myself from them a little. (They already blame me for not attending the activity very often).

With group C I had too much when the toxic in that group started criticizing me for not meeting them every week. This time I started to worry when the same pattern repeated... Maybe I'm the problem

@Pandoras_Can_Opener@mander.xyz avatar

The thing with toxic people is that they by definition create tension. No matter what you do, they will find a way to manufacture drama. You’re NOT the problem, the problem is the toxic person and at a stretch your lack of putting firm boundaries in place. You could meet with the new friends in the other city and not tell toxic person. And let them rage and blame and whatever when they find out.

You could ask to meet with the initial 3 friends one on one and maybe work on excluding the toxic person but there’s going to be plenty of tension. You have to decide if you can weather the tension or if you want to slowly have your friendships poisoned. You sadly can’t have both.

As a a multilingual I don't really associate anything with colors...however, for some reason I often mistake "9" for "D" ... in Bosnian, the number 9 is called "devet" where the emphesis is put on the letter "d" ... and whenever I have to type a combination of letters and numbers, and 9 comes up, i think of "Devet" and write "D" instead.

luthis, in Bilingual synesthesia?

Wow I’m bookmarking this!

ContentConsumer9999,

How?

luthis,

With the bookmark button

ContentConsumer9999,

I'm on Kbin. I don't see any bookmark button.

luthis,

I finally got around to checking… wow the kbin interface is pretty nice! But there is no bookmark/save button I could find either… wierd.

Firefox kept having a panic attack as well:

Nepenthe,
@Nepenthe@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, there's currently no way to save things on kbin except to boost it and dig through your boosted tab later, which is not worth it if you tend to do that to a lot of random comments, etc. as well. I'm hoping that isn't too far over the horizon, I know ernest and those helping him have been hard at work on other things. I do not pretend to know enough about computers to know what most of it means, but I am cheering them from the sidelines.

DrStrange_99, in So why do you perfer Kbin over Lemmy?

Started with kbin today. After the first few interactions , it seems to get much better.

Edit: had to scroll down fully to type this comment. Is it just me or is it like this ?

curiosityLynx,

Iirc that's intentional so you are more likely to read what others have written before starting your own comment chain. That might just be Tildes though, there that's explicitly said to be the reason why the commenting box is at the bottom.

vamp07, in So why do you perfer Kbin over Lemmy?

I don't really understand the difference, I think it's a shame that a Reddit replacement gets split into two camps in the Fediverse. At the very least, they should use the exact same data at the back end and interact with each other seamlessly. In either case, this is what you get in an open protocol. Maybe one or the other will win out in the long run.

vamp07, in Anyone else still kinda miss Reddit?

I'm having fun helping build new communities here. I only miss it when I can't find a community with sufficient participation or when I have a specific question that was previously discussed on Reddit. For those cases, I'm willing to still use Reddit.

Millie, in Hey, I'm having an issue with usernames on Kbin through my Wordpress-connected ActivityPub website.

I see you as @SamXavia on kbin, lemmy, and firefish. Though maybe you’re talking about another account. If you wanted [email protected] you’d need to set up some sort of fediverse instance of your own and set it up to use that domain. If you’re trying to use it on kbin, I’d recommend kbin or lemmy, as I wasn’t actually able to post this on firefish.

It honestly might still be worthwhile even with a federated wordpress if you’re trying to use it for that purpose.

SamXavia,
@SamXavia@kbin.social avatar

@Millie I'm talking about another account, as this is my personal for none professional things. I'm trying to set up a Wordpress-based one with the ActivityPub Protocol, from what I've seen it just looks like a Kbin issue due to Character limits and stuff. I'm slowly working it out, just broke the website as of the moment so hope I can fix it soon.

Millie,

I’m sure you’ll find a way if you’re determined enough!

You may find, though, that interoperability between platforms isn’t always quite extensive enough to do everything you want to without switching for certain features. Like, I can read top-level lemmy and kbin threads in firefish, and I can reply to lemmy threads, but I can’t read comments on either and I can’t reply to kbin threads.

What I’ve done instead, though, is set up a VIA macro to swap over to the next tab, cut the current url, head to lemm.ee, tab to the search, paste, search, and pick the top link. Between firefish and lemmy it covers most of the other instance types, though I haven’t tried posting to a wordpress yet.

Happy to do some interoperability testing with firefish, though! I’m curious how I can interact with which platforms!

SamXavia,
@SamXavia@kbin.social avatar

@Millie My goal is pretty simple, I just want to make it so that I can post up updates that will end up on ActivityPub for people to see, instead of having to go to the website. Also, it allows people to comment and stuff on it and I can see it directly through the website.

As I will most likely keep using Kbin for my personal as don't really want to move away from it.

SamXavia,
@SamXavia@kbin.social avatar

@Millie From what I can tell about the ActivityPub stuff, Kbin seems to have a wacky way of adding users into the system as Lemmy & Mastodon has worked fine in finding the correct username of @Sam

My next step is to work out if I can remove the www. as it's just really annoying but it's not necessary in my case to much ig.

scabrous-leper, in Anyone else still kinda miss Reddit?
@scabrous-leper@kbin.social avatar

@bbplay13 yes, I miss the good parts as well...I used to be able to ask a question on how to repair something and get 20 solid responses in under an hour. There may be a corner of the fediverse that will fill a similar niche, but so far I haven't found it. I spend most of my time over on Mastodon.social , now, which seems to have more traffic, and maybe more niches. We'll see. I'm certainly NOT going back to reddit, but I do indeed wish it hadn't gone so pear-shaped, so quickly.

Wooly, in Anyone else still kinda miss Reddit?

I really miss the dog videos, took me a week or so to notice that lemmy doesn’t have any, all the porn is garbage because we can’t have videos and none of the apps (except kinda liftoff) have in-app video players for sites like redgifs.

But no one is posting videos because most people aren’t going to watch them if they have to go to a website, I won’t.

I hope boost releases with in-app support and the option to hide certain posts like it used to. Then I can just tick videos and go on my merry way.

TimeSquirrel,
@TimeSquirrel@kbin.social avatar

Video hosting is one of the most bandwidth-intensive things you can do on the Internet. Most of these fediverse admins are hobbyists running servers from their basement or on cloud hosting from money out of their own pockets.

NOOBMASTER, in Anyone else still kinda miss Reddit?

fuck no.

Roundcat, in Anyone else still kinda miss Reddit?
@Roundcat@kbin.social avatar

I miss the golden days of reddit, like from when I first discovered it in 2011 to about 2015. It just seemed more possible to have in depth conversations around that time, discover new and exciting communities, and overall just feel good to be part of the community. As it basically started to replace all web communities, became more corporate, and as political discourse became more common and hostile, it started to become less and less enjoyable, but I continued to browse because by that time I had an addiction that to this day I'm still trying to kick.

kbin and lemmy sorta give me that feel I had for early reddit, and even though I still haven't fully kicked reddit, I do spend a lot more screen time here than I do on my reddit subs, and I barely browse their front page anymore. Overall, I think I just have an internet addiction that I need to manage overall, but at the very least kbin is giving me some of the highs I used to enjoy with reddit.

HipPriest, in Anyone else still kinda miss Reddit?

I still log in a few times a week for a couple of disability support communities and then I might have a quick browse through the comics sub after. There's rarely something that makes me want to comment outside of those subs. (Incidentally one of Reddit's favourite cartoonists has stated she's no longer interacted with users and only posting her comics due to the toxicity of the comments and DMs)

But even with the comics I've tended to start supporting them on patreon and see their stuff that way.

Last time I did comment a few weeks ago, things got combative quickly and I don't know if it was normal for Reddit aggression and I'm just used to being in here now or if it was a one off dick.

I don't miss the time I spent on bs there though. I posted elsewhere that I've been reading a lot more since I cut down on Reddit use!
