grte, to technology in Apple could force a 111-year-old fruit company to change its apple logo

If the article is accurate and Apple is trying to secure IP rights over, "images of apples," surely no sane judge would rule in favour of such a wide ranging and foolish claim. I'm sure there are plenty of businesses who will be able to claim prior art over a picture of a damn apple.

Incidentally I'm trademarking the sun and then going after the entire country of Japan. I hope you aren't too attached to that flag.

zik,

A few years ago I tried to register a domain name which included the word "purple". I was told I couldn't because HP had trademarked the word "purple" so it was off the list of registerable words. I pointed out that my domain was in no way related to their purple laptops and I was told tough, no-one could for any reason register any domain which included the word "purple" because HP now owned the dictionary word "purple".

I'm still annoyed about it to this day.

Liz,

Bullshit. They just don’t want to deal with the lawsuit even though HP would be 100% in the wrong. But we don’t have a justice system, just a legal system. If you got enough money you can make nearly anything the law.

burningmatches, to technology in Apple could force a 111-year-old fruit company to change its apple logo

Just to be clear, Apple isn't asking the Swiss apple growers to change their logo. And it definitely isn't forcing them.

I assmue some journalist saw Apple making a very boring Swiss trademark application and decided to call up a local company with an apple in its logo to see what they thought about it. There's zero chance the company will have to re-brand.

Would be funny if they can successfully counter-sue apple to stop using their logo

I like this place. A lot. Yes, everything is not super polished. Yes, I have to be more active to find the content I want. Yes, there's a lot less content than on reddit. But the people here feel like real people, not people and bots who push agendas.

And I've always been somebody who contributes, so I'm here to help build the place I want.

ReversalHatchery, to android in Beeper Mini is the iMessage for Android app we’ve been waiting for - Mishaal Rahman

If it’s that Beeper then it’s not just about imessage, but facebook messenger, whatsapp, instagram, telegram, viber and a few others too. Beeper supports all that, by using Matrix bridges.

Apollo2323,

No, its a new app! They built specifically for iMessage only. Learn more here: blog.beeper.com/…/introducing-beeper-mini-get-blu…

venusenvy47, (edited )

Interesting. I just checked and found the information. It sounds like they want to rebuild the whole app and just add one service at a time. They are starting with just iMessage.

www.beeper.com/faq#what-is-beeper

Edit: I wonder how long this will last. They aren’t using a Mac to log you into your iCloud account with this. They have found a workaround.

“This is now possible because the iMessage protocol and encryption have been reverse engineered by jjtech, a security researcher.”

Edit 2: I’m really curious about this. The researcher has some Python that can run anywhere and let you send iMessages. It seems like something the Apple would shutdown, but, on the other hand, I wouldn’t expect Beeper to introduce an app that might get disabled.

venusenvy47,

I’m confused about this article because I have Beeper, but they make this statement:

“Beeper Mini is a new app from the folks behind Beeper, a unified chatting and inbox app that brings together the best chat apps under one roof.”

I haven’t heard about a mini version.

Apollo2323,

Its a new version they called Mini because it only supports iMessage natively. There is a research who reverse engineered how iMessage works that’s how they manage to make it work without an Apple account and just your phone number.

hamsterkill,

Sounds like it’s something Apple could easily kill by changing something in the protocol that would require it to be re-reverse engineered.

ReversalHatchery,

I’m not entirely sure if iMessage still works right now for phones that ran out of support, but such a change would kill it for those phones too.

Since my first OLED (Galaxy s6) I’ll never buy a phone without OLED ever again. It’s a huge difference when reading stuff in OLED mode apps and at night. I’d never trade that for anything.

I don’t think it’s an issue with phones, as TVs and monitor have static elements for half a day or longer, phones tend to be one for minutes, maybe a few hours max.

My phone doesn’t even have a hint of a burn-in after 3 years of heavy usage (Galaxy S10). I use it way more than most people, often 8 hours a day.
